Opus III - "I Talk To The Wind"

On one level, it's "It's A Find Day" Part II. Several things set this song apart, though:

- The melody. Gotta love the chutzpah involved in writing a melody that puts the dominant chord against the tonic chord throughout most of the verse, plus that gorgeous dissonance at the end of each phrase where the singer is on the ninth just makes me swoon.

- The mantra. Yes, it's deeply-pilled and "OH MY GOD MY HAND HAS STARS IN IT" but I still cannot get enough of it. Chanting "The wind cannot hear" in that wispy, forlorn voice over and over lends a creepy, forlorn overtone to the song that puts it over the top.

- The flute sample. Every dance track should sample a pretty flute glissando.

Also, every time I hear the song I think of the video, which features the attractive elf who sings the song dancing underneath her fairy tree. How could you not love that?

You know, I take back my original statement; "It's A Fine Day" is "I Talk To The Wind" The Prelude. This track just kicks ass.

Must be a King Crimson cover. What style of music do these guys play?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 25 April 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Early 90s cheese-rave.

Also, how many times should one use "forlorn" in a sentence?

I love its a fine day to death and will download this song post haste.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Saturday, 26 April 2003 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

wasnt the singer Kirsty Hawkshaw?

i totally forgot about this track but i do remember liking it at the time of its release - i'll have a fresh listen if i can find it

also, while we're on the subject of Opus III can someone confirm that 'Its A Fine Day' was a cover version?

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 26 April 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I know nothing about Opus III beyond liking "It's A Fine Day" and "I Talk To The Wind" and thinking the singer was K-ROOOOOOOOOOOOOWR.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 26 April 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Kirsty went solo with stuff produced by Mark Pritchard (and i think Tom 'Cosmos' Middleton) altho it wasnt of the 4/4 epic house variety - she did sing on Way Out West's 'Stealth' tho but they've gone off the boil quite a bit recently

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 26 April 2003 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I am totally gonna download some of this stuff, Steve. I think that she's one of the few whisper-voiced no-meat singers that I actually like.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 26 April 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

hmmm, you might like 'Sci-clone' (sp?) which has numerous remixes (including one by Danny Breaks) - i have the CD single somewhere. i dont know what happened with Global Communication with regards to an album called 'Time Machine' coming out but it was supposed to feature Kirsty prominently (she was dating either Pritchard or Middleton at the time i think)...not sure this ever saw the light of day in the end, ha, i could just search on the net and know in seconds...

"It's A Fine Day" has been rereleased last november as Kirsty Hawkshaw Fine Day, with excellent James Holden (progressive), Mike Koglin (trance) and Steve Murano (techtrance) mixes. And she has indeed done lots of vocals for dance producers: BT, Tiesto, Ian Pooley, Mike Koglin, Way Out West, Delerium, Technique, Silent Poets, Drumclub, Swayzak...and I probably missed quite a lot more...

(Will nobody mention how Orbital brilliantly revamped stuff from "It's a Fine Day" for "Halcyon" or is that not to be addressed?)

also, while we're on the subject of Opus III can someone confirm that 'Its A Fine Day' was a cover version?

Yes it was a cover. This is the original.

David (David), Saturday, 26 April 2003 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

(Ned, we are ignoring "Halcyon" because "I Talk To The Wind" is so groovy and wonderful. Besides, "Halcyon" is great but it isn't even the best song on _Orbital 2_.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 26 April 2003 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

(All is clear.)

Yes it was a cover. This is the original.

what was the original? why do people have to answer questions on a board that keeps threads for as long as this one does, with links that will be gone weeks after the post?

Wikipedia says:

Their debut album, Mind Fruit, produced the track "It's a Fine Day", a cover of a 1983 single by Jane & Barton

Always thought this sounded naggingly familiar, but I have never heard of Jane & Barton. Still love this (early 90s cheese-rave lol)and "I Talk To The Wind" a ton.

Wow, I had definitely never heard the Jane original. That's really beautiful.

Double wow, Dan you'd never heard the Crimson track?

Such A Hilbily (Dan Peterson), Thursday, 23 July 2009 14:27 (sixteen years ago)

I spent a good portion of my life actively avoiding bands like King Crimson and Jethro Tull with varying degrees of success.

Lisa Simpson = a fictional bitch (HI DERE), Thursday, 23 July 2009 14:29 (sixteen years ago)

OMG I really am getting old. I'm actually enjoying a King Crimson track.

My 16 self would be SO disappointed.

Yeah I know what you mean! lol
