the last band you saw play live.

I saw the go-betweens tonight. it was really good--the first time I've seen them.

robert was v. funny and stalking around making faces.

they played nothing from the first three records and only a couple from the fourth--mostly newer stuff.

I really liked one called 'surfing magazines' which, ally cook tells me, is from their last but one album. he also told me it isn't as good on the record as it was tonight. but I will download it anyway.

they played an encore and were off stage by half past ten. when music started playing and the non-stage lights came up, many of the people in the crowd started to boo v. loudly. it upset me a little. but they came back on and played another two songs. they seemed to enjoy it.

in the middle of one song [I forget which], robert started talking about their tour, as the other band members played on. he said that they're off on a new tour around europe, for four weeks. four weeks is a long time, he says; the longest tour in rock and roll--the foo fighters--the foo fighters only do two weeks---the strokes--they do two weeks and go back to new york--but the go-betweens will do four weeks--and this is the first night of their tour--so they are fresh.

and they went on and played the rest of a great show.

I liked it a lot.

what was the last show you saw? how was it?

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 26 April 2003 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I have never seen and would never see a live music show--they allow too much room for the artists to play with/change the lyrics/tempo/instrumentation from the songs' original recording.

the only 'live' show I would attend would be one that had the original composer of the songs sitting in a high-backed chair in front of a machine playing the definitive recorded version of the songs as recorded by them.

Heir Gongro (RJG), Saturday, 26 April 2003 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Interpol.

Chris V. (Chris V), Saturday, 26 April 2003 01:00 (twenty-two years ago)

fugazi, 1999 or 2000.

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 26 April 2003 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw interpol play in milwaukee last september.

but we were tired and only heard two or three songs before leaving.

wasn't so fun. but they had a local guy supporting them. a mark waldoch. he was great.

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 26 April 2003 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

nerd, last may/early june.

adam west (adamwest), Saturday, 26 April 2003 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

did you all just buy tickets? did any of you go to the shows?

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 26 April 2003 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Palomar, last night, who were terrific (I bought their CD, which isn't as good as the show was). The Oranges Band before them, who were OK but nowhere near as good as I'd hoped. Missed the Hold Steady, alas, esp. since I wrote 'em up recently.

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 26 April 2003 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

fugazi were good, but not great.

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 26 April 2003 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

like when guy broke out the clarinet to do the "free improv" portion of the show, it felt really forced

also, my girlfriend of the time made us late and i missed lungfish

also, she said the ex sounded like big country (they did)

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 26 April 2003 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Badly Drawn Boy (he had a band with him).

The show was about three days before Have you Fed the Fish came out in the U.S. and it was a Tuesday and Snowing so only a couple hundred people showed up. I guess that was a blow to his ego or something because he was kind of acting like an Ass. He even stopped a song 4 or 5 bars in and gave band members dirty looks. Pretty disappointing.

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Saturday, 26 April 2003 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Frank Black and the Catholics. It was the first time I had ever arrived to a show only to discover it sold out. Also, the first time I ever hopped the fence to sneak in.

Famous Athlete, Saturday, 26 April 2003 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Sea and Cake with Circulatory System. Both were good. I liked Circ. better.

David Allen, Saturday, 26 April 2003 01:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw the Hot Hot Heat a couple o' weeks back. Fine, but ultimately uneventful.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 26 April 2003 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Boys Named Sue last Sunday. Excellent classic country served up with a twist of hip hop. (including matching track suits and bling)

That Girl (thatgirl), Saturday, 26 April 2003 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The last dozen or so bands I've seen have all been local. Machine Translations and Heligoland were particularly noteworthy.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Saturday, 26 April 2003 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

The Doobie Brothers, the Sadies w/ Cuff the Duke, Roy Clark, Frank Black & Catholics w/ Tangiers, George Jones, Terri Clark and probably about six more whose names I can't think right now.
That was my April. April is over for me now. Unless maybe Bjorn Again. I don't know. I fucking doubt it.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Saturday, 26 April 2003 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Last weekend, my brother's band, the Golden Famile, and a band called the Blackeyes. Quite good, the both of them, in a, i dunno, psych-country way. Golden Famile were somewhere between spiritualized and blue rodeo, maybe (simplish country songs, but with farfisa and sax and distortion). Blackeyes had a bowed saw, which is always a nice thing.

pauls00, Saturday, 26 April 2003 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Last show: Blueprint and Illogic in a CHINESE RESTAURANT!! Btw, both guys can't freestyle at all, though they were pretty good otherwise.

Last band: Wilco last October. Intense version of "So Misunderstood" during the triple encore. Don't know if that's the norm, though...

Adam Harrison-Friday, Saturday, 26 April 2003 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Q & Not U. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that they had recovered their old vigor.

j.lu (j.lu), Saturday, 26 April 2003 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

NOFX
I got so drunk I wet my bed.
Don't know if that is good or bad.
(probably bad)

Last band: Wilco last October. Intense version of "So Misunderstood" during the triple encore. Don't know if that's the norm, though...

I saw them in October too... where did you see them?

David Allen, Saturday, 26 April 2003 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't even remember they all seem to blur together recently, and I'm sure I saw some this week or last week.

A Nairn (moretap), Saturday, 26 April 2003 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

"Q & Not U" I did see them fairly recently, and I didn't even relized they lost thier vigor. I saw them like 5 years ago to and they were just as vigoroso as they were now.

(Is that post by Gier for real? if so that's messed up!)

A Nairn (moretap), Saturday, 26 April 2003 03:26 (twenty-two years ago)

>> I saw them in October too... where did you see them?

At the Orpheum in Boston.

Adam Harrison-Friday, Saturday, 26 April 2003 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

My tiny private college managed to get Reel Big Fish to play here, so I saw that. They were really good, if you're into that sort of thing.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Saturday, 26 April 2003 03:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Ted Leo. A couple of great moments.

Mark (MarkR), Saturday, 26 April 2003 03:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Went out to see Aytobach Kreisor at the new Sin-e, but decided at the last minute (like literally; I was in the neighborhood) that I wasn't in the mood. It was weird. I was sort of looking forward to this show. Good band -- Long Island stoner-metal meets East Village punk with a bit of what you'd imagine a slacked-out Motorhead sounds like. I've done a couple of write-ups on 'em here and there.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 26 April 2003 04:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw Deerhoof and a bunch of crap bands. Deerhoof was really great. It was a really strange atmosphere (local guys were doing weird al covers on stage before they went on, it was outdoors, daytime, kinda cloudy), but they seemed to enjoy playing.

I was going to see Q & Not U, but they canceled. When I saw Wilco they did not do "Misunderstood", which is my favorite song.

Adam A. (Keiko), Saturday, 26 April 2003 04:38 (twenty-two years ago)

What is up with Sin-e, why does everyone and their moms play there now? Hasn't it been around for some time?

I saw my friend Matt's band play last night. They were better than I've ever seen them although there was hardly anybody in the place. They went on an hour and a half late!! grr.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 26 April 2003 05:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw Michael Hurley for $3 in a small bar. Soft-spoken, a little tired, but with moments of wit and inspiration (he played electric piano a little too which was danceable even though no one did). In April I missed Smegma, Bright Eyes, Devendra Banhart/Angels of Light, Hella/Aisler's Set, and Notwist due mostly to lack of funds. Shitty.

but...

Tuesday I'm seeing Frog Eyes! Super-exciting.

Ryan McKay (Ryan McKay), Saturday, 26 April 2003 05:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Cold Sweat and The Last Waltz (hardcore bands) in a church basement somewhere in Seattle.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 26 April 2003 06:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i've been going to a ridiculous amount of shows in the past year. it always seems strange to me how little of ILM even seems to go to concerts or talk about live performance.

last week was Postal Service/Cex. PS really surpassed my expectations and put on a good show, not just laptop fuckery w/ singing. good to see Cex again since he moved out west, but his set was mostly new goth-y stuff that i wasn't really feeling.

i saw Q And Not U recently and was pretty impressed. i never saw them as a quartet, and hadn't heard their last album but they turned out to be pretty fun and creative and energetic.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 26 April 2003 07:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i saw the Polyphonic Spree tonight and oh man...such an interesting pot of influences and i love them all! they were just really energetic, fun, positive, complex and every single girl in the group was really hot. mindblowing.

heywood jablomi (heywood), Saturday, 26 April 2003 07:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Primal Scream just a couple of hours ago. RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWK.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 26 April 2003 07:50 (twenty-two years ago)

beachbuggy, wasnt that interesting live, lomax, which rocked, wired in sound which rocked...

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Saturday, 26 April 2003 08:34 (twenty-two years ago)

mad capsule markets were amazing! really rocked and mixed all the computer stuff with live drums/guitar/bass/samples really well. They guy even did a "sine wave" solo by twiddling all these knobs on this machiney thing in front of him. Everyone went mental throughout the night!.

saw the faint as well who were fun and had great visuals behind them but ultimately just pressed play on the laptops and only the singer was really live.

Mr Monket (apn99), Saturday, 26 April 2003 08:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Primal Scream a couple of hours ago. As Ned said RRAAAAWWWKKK!

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Saturday, 26 April 2003 10:02 (twenty-two years ago)

well not raaaawwwwwwkkkkk but it was sunny murray with tony bevan on saxophone and a bloke whose name i forget on bass.

The dirst part was best. a long break was taken in between so the second part lost a bit of focus.

but excellent and well worth going to.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 26 April 2003 10:09 (twenty-two years ago)

ha! It was the Manics at Wembley last November, I think. It was good.

Don't really much live music these days.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 26 April 2003 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)

The Blood Brothers at The Garage. The band was good. The crowd made me feel ooooold.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Saturday, 26 April 2003 11:28 (twenty-two years ago)

And I'm only 24! Blood Brothers = The screamo Busted?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Saturday, 26 April 2003 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Martini Bros. back in Feb - the best live performance I've seen bar Basement Jaxx.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 26 April 2003 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Turin Brakes, last Tuesday in Tivoli, Utrecht

zilverberg.tk (zilverberg.tk), Saturday, 26 April 2003 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Richard Pinhas (Heldon) at Orion Studios in Baltimore, last Autumn. I'm seeing Echolyn there tonight.

Joe (Joe), Saturday, 26 April 2003 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

William Cepeda and Grupo Afro-Boricua a month or two ago. It was pretty good, but after a while the Puerto Rican folkloric stuff starts getting too samey for me. It really is a folk music, and even though he add variety by changing the orchestration frequently, it still gets to be a little too much of the same thing. Also, it turned into a Puerto Rican pride fest, which I think I've had enough of by now. On the other hand, I would occasionally look at the percussionists lined up on staging, playing for very long stretches at a time, and just be amazed at their intensity.

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 26 April 2003 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't go to nearly as many gigs as I used to. Last one was Wayne Shorter at the Barbican about six weeks ago. Great band - John Patitucci on bass, Brian Blade on drums and Danilo Perez on piano. It was excellent.

James Ball (James Ball), Saturday, 26 April 2003 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw McLuskey and the Oranges last night in DC. McLuskey was pretty grand, all drunken Welsh swagger. Their songs came across pretty well, mostly stuff from Do Dallas but a couple of alright new tunes. The Oranges were good, but the energy seemed to be a bit down as the crowd was really sparse.

I saw Q and Not U a couple of weeks ago, again in DC, and they were terrible. Banging on dustpans and the like, and making some VERY BRAVE stands against the war in Iraq. Plus, they need to get a bassist, as the random, atonal keyboard blurt is really a poor substitute for low-end rhythmic melody. A bummer, as their albums are swell.

Brandon Gentry (Brandon Gentry), Saturday, 26 April 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

last two were Panzerpappa (Norwegian progrock band, apparently quite influenced by the whole RIO thing. Really quite good show)

aaand Wayne Shorter Quartet (my first jazzconcert actually. I was a bit afraid, since while I knew some of his solorecords, stuff with Miles and Weather Report, I had NO idea what he'd been up to for over 20 years. Thankfully it turned out to be one helluva (acoustic) concert. I was slightly afraid that he'd be a completely burnt out ol' guy doing totally toothless smoothjazz now.

Øystein Holm-Olsen (Øystein H-O), Saturday, 26 April 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Last I saw was the Dismemberment Plan...I think that was last year. i'd never heard any of their songs and I was thrilled to see they were GREAT.
It was in a little shack in the middle of an alley, almost a hobo slumgullionland....people were warming their hands on burning oil barrels outside and trying to protect themselves from the rain. their were lots of leaks in the roof.
The audience was really colorful, lotso indie kids with kids dressed like indie kids. One couple had a baby in red footie pajamas with big red earmuffs like rifle shooters use to protect his baby ears. The bassist broke a string halfway though, and the broken string was given to the baby, who chewed on it. Another standout was this 350 pound man in short shorts and a baseball cap, dancing and sweating to every song, shouting all the words and drumming the beat on his enormous chest.
The singer did impressions of Henry Rollins and some others...his Bart Simpson impression was greeted with "meh" from the audience. He said, "Okay, here's our next song. it's called Fuck You for Hating My Bart Impression."

Fivvy (Fivvy), Saturday, 26 April 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

over the past weekend:

Bobby Previte's Counterclockwise
Tomasz Stanko Quartet
Richard Bona
Han Bennink- Jaak Sooäär- Mikko Innanen trio
Hiram BulloXoR Trio
...& a few more

(at this year's Jazzkaar Festival in Tallinn)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw meu and Mertin Grech about a month ago at the Oxford Zodiac. Meu were good - lots of indie-pop, with the enphasis on the indie. Good tunes, and the classic let's-leave-the-guitars-leaning-against-the-amp finish Quality.

Grech was horrible. Like a more annoying Muse. Avoid at all costs.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 09:12 (twenty-two years ago)

probably Hang On The Box and Brain Failure a month or so ago. maybe a month and a half. was really a good show, although i doubt i'll ever get to see either of them again.

i need to go to more shows. used to go to more and haven't been as much in recent years, unfortunately.

janni (janni), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

three years pass...
Nine Inch Nails, who were rather loud. (Next will probably be Acid Mothers Temple.)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 26 March 2007 02:21 (eighteen years ago)

Last show was Of Montreal a few weeks ago - will be seeing Sebadoh later this week.

ENBB, Monday, 26 March 2007 04:00 (eighteen years ago)

Was the dood nood?

Drooone, Monday, 26 March 2007 04:00 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think I've attended a show since I saw DJ Shadow a few months ago. But that was phenomenal. Best visuals I've ever seen, eclipsing even the Flaming Lips.

souldesqueeze, Monday, 26 March 2007 04:01 (eighteen years ago)

Sadly, no. He only did that once because it was an 18+ show.

ENBB, Monday, 26 March 2007 04:10 (eighteen years ago)

Deerhoof at Emo's in Austin. Is it wrong for me to say that they attract an extremely nerdy crowd? Where were all the beautiful people? Good show nonetheless

Moodles, Monday, 26 March 2007 04:14 (eighteen years ago)

Sadly, no. He only did that once because it was an 18+ show.
Damn, he's got a hot cock too.

I think the last show I saw was Animal Collective aaaages ago. Maybe November last year. They sounded terrific, until Avey Tare shredded his voice about 30 mins in and got all whiney and they all left the stage.
Lost Domain opened for them, they were majikyl. Best Australian band going around.

Drooone, Monday, 26 March 2007 04:14 (eighteen years ago)

I thought I was going to be the only one here who hadn't been to a show for a while.

Outside of bands I played with, I think the last show I saw was Joshua Marcus at Pete's Candy Store. Before that I think it might have been The Ex/Abouretum at Maxwell's, which was phenomenal.

Hurting 2, Monday, 26 March 2007 04:19 (eighteen years ago)

Josh, you wanna come see Roberta Flack introduce a good funk band and Stephanie McKay t'morrow?

Really excited about Porter Wagoner on Friday.

forksclovetofu, Monday, 26 March 2007 04:21 (eighteen years ago)

Not sure I can come out tomorrow night. I'll holler at you though.

LIGHTNING BOLT

nyc 3/24/07

deadbears, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 03:55 (eighteen years ago)

Common Market, a Seattle undie rap group that I don't like one bit, but have somehow ended up seeing three times, which is actually more than I've seen any other act. Their DJ seems like a cool guy though. The rapper, on the other hand, strikes me as a self-serious asshole with an amusing beard, who thinks changing the lyrics of "Come Together" to be about Bush is a really good idea. But then again, each time I've seen them, the backpackers have eaten that shit up. That was about a month ago.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 04:05 (eighteen years ago)

tv on the radio + subtle

subtle was mostly entertaining and ridiculous, they got old after about a half hour. loaded jokes leading to songs as the punchline, skit-like monologues in between songs, lots of visual props held up during certain lyrics. the dude who plays drum machine for them is pretty amazing. (plays the drum machine live by hitting the buttons) the last song they played was a cover of shellac's 'prayer to God' and it was pretty good.

guitar problems for TVOR during the first 2-3 songs, then they hit a pretty nice groove for the rest of the set and rocked it out. total MBV-wall-of-sound mode for most of the show, which was awesome, but i thought that their very best moments were when they let the songs breathe a little bit more to start out and then dropped the sonic boom. if i had a complaint, it was that tracks like 'i was a lover' and 'let the devil in' were (slightly) less interesting as MBV tributes than they are on record, especially when they could have been used to contrast the wall-of-sound thing they had going. they didn't even play the bassline from 'let the devil in', which is the best part of the song! surprisingly, those songs still mostly worked out so it's a pretty minor complaint.

6335, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 05:22 (eighteen years ago)

ooioo last week

JW, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 05:38 (eighteen years ago)

i saw the tvotr/subtle show in vancouver several days ago. it was actually quite similar to 6335's description, although i apparently liked subtle a lot more than he did. i was so impressed by them because they basically eliminated every problem that has plauged live rap shows since the sugarhill. and yeah, the shellac cover was sweet. it was the first time a live performance of a song had made me genuinely uncomfortable.

tvotr were good. the wall of sound 6335 mentioned was totally present. they always shout out to the pixies, and i never heard it until the show. it was like joey santiago was playing rythm and lead at the same time. they didn't play my favourite songs (i was a lover, king eternal) and i was kind of choked about that. but the rendition of the wrong was was fucking choice. they turned it into a total rockabilly song. it was way faster and more snare-heavy than on record. i loved it.

davie, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 05:46 (eighteen years ago)

The Dunedin Resound Festival. I don't understand Mother Goose, but the Clean and Sneaky Feelings were great. I'd never heard Sneaky Feelings before, but the few songs they played were lovely, esp. "Not to Take Sides." The Chills were quite enjoyable, as were Delgirl, who only played for 10 minutes. Gestalt Switch were decent, as were Onanon, who got a lot better when they lent vocal duties to people other than the lead singer.

clotpoll, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 05:50 (eighteen years ago)

i had that same uncomfortable feeling during the shellac cover. he introduced it at our show w/ 'i just had a bad break-up and i need to say - ben gibbard doesn't have anything on steve albini'

subtle did sound fantastic -- clear vocals, crisp tones, solid grooves. i've seen them once before and the same thing happened, they started to grate on me after 30-40 min. i should also mention that when i say they were ridiculous, i thought that was mostly a good thing..although it probably is that very thing which eventually makes them start to grate on me. starts to feel like a episode of MAD TV or something

i can see (hear) the pixies thing now that you mention it

6335, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 06:01 (eighteen years ago)

er, xp to davie

PIPETTES & FUCK YOU THEY ROCKED!!

Saxby D. Elder, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 06:24 (eighteen years ago)

a handful of south by southwest day shows...mark burgess of the chameleons, the black angels, sloan, busdriver, calla, aqualung (ah! the girlfriend's pick), sloan (for the second time), tall firs, mv + ee, thurston moore of sonic youth

stephen, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 06:25 (eighteen years ago)

Sloan = wicked. Nice.

Saxby D. Elder, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 06:27 (eighteen years ago)

If this were a competition, I'd have beaten all'yall's asses easily: Last show I saw was in 19fuckin98: Diamanda Galas at Massey Hall. (Possibly the only performer I've seen who didn't play an encore - bless her! - even tho the crowd "wanted" one.) Why the drought? Well, I don't drive; live 20 miles away from the city where the bands all play (double my distance of 7 years ago), which would mean 3-4 hours spent on three buses and one subway; care little for much of the current music scene, and have never been a overly huge fan of (most) live pop music (with a few exceptions.) I'll definitely put up with that 4hr commute if the right performer comes to town, but it'd have to be someone crucial, someone I've never seen before like MX-80 or Cecil Taylor or another similarly aging jazz legend.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 07:02 (eighteen years ago)

I saw something called "Monkey Swallows the Universe" the other night. Tweemania, but very endearing and seemed to have some catchy melodies.

Ben Boyerrr, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 09:04 (eighteen years ago)

Finish Me Off (warmed by Forgotten Sunrise) ...but that was already at the beginning of March, yeh.
Liked the headliners tho. They're metal.

t**t, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 10:10 (eighteen years ago)

i can't even remember the last time i saw a band live
maybe a rubbish skronk night in fitzrovia a few months back counts

going to see Robyn tomorrow night tho

blueski, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 10:42 (eighteen years ago)

I saw Ash a couple of weeks ago. They were good, but not great. Hopefully should see Electrelane and Battles over the next 6 weeks.

Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 10:50 (eighteen years ago)

I saw Grabba Grabba Tape on Monday. I had to because I was putting it on. They're a duo from Spain who play really fast short synth-punk OTT-ness. I tend to describe them as "Daft Punk meets Melt-Banana" if I'm in a hurry. Anyway, they were cool and people dug them, including all these leave-the-kids-at-home-take-the-next-day-off munters who bundled in after seeing Faithless in the arena up the road and were completely nonplussed for 10 or 15 minutes

DJ Mencap, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 11:14 (eighteen years ago)

were they wearing the chicken suits?

Grandpont Genie, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 11:16 (eighteen years ago)

But of course. If chickens they are. They also covered 'Killing In The Name'

DJ Mencap, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 11:47 (eighteen years ago)

stinky munchkins at the art school in glasgow; they were phenomenal!

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 12:01 (eighteen years ago)

I saw Mamadou Diabate inside a chapel while lightly robo-ing

it was very boring. he was much better when I saw him at the Festival for the Eno; I think maybe that type of music just sounds better in a more natural environment (no noble savage). but all the money went to treat obstetric fistulas in Africa so I couldn't feel too bad.

bernard snowy, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 12:08 (eighteen years ago)

Aereogramme, about three weeks ago. They were quite good, better than I had anticipated.

Marty Innerlogic, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 13:04 (eighteen years ago)

Belgium is a great place for concerts-since arriving I've seen Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, who were fun, as well as LCD Soundsystem (even more fun) and last week, Andrew Bird (less on the fun, more about admiration). Tonight it is Air.

...including all these leave-the-kids-at-home-take-the-next-day-off munters who bundled in after seeing Faithless in the arena up the road and were completely nonplussed for 10 or 15 minutes

hohoo! the image of that sooo warms my heart! :)

Unearth. It was pretty lame. I left. But it was ok because I was on the guestlist.

A couple of months ago, The Young Gods for a special unplugged acoustic guitar & light drum kit concert. Their repertoire was rewritten for the occasion by Vincent Hänni, who joined them onstage. It was fun seeing them play like that as Franz is a former prize-winning guitarist who never uses the instrument live with TYG save for occasional generic pop-strumming à la "Skinflower". Hänni was also a pleasant surprise as he's better known for Pan Sonic-like frequency manipulation than flamenco- or improv-style guitar action. The songs became simpler, poppier and much lighter.

Menomena, last night. A great show, but especially so if you've ever played music yourself. I don't know of a band that better captures the joy in the process of writing, arranging, performing, etc. Seemed like super nice dudes as well.

Morphogenesis and Dave Phillips (amongst others) at the Red Rose in London. I think there was an amplified plant at one point. And most of the people talked right over Dave Phillips.
