Stores in New York

Hi,

I'm going on a holiday in New York in a few weeks and I would like to buy some American music (Elephant 6, Not Lame, Saddle Creek, Poptones, indie in general) when I'm there. Can you give me some good (or cheap) record stores in Manhattan I have to visit? And are their stores that sell t-shirts of bands like Apples In Stereo, Grandaddy and Cotton Mather, so I don't have to order them over the internet?

Thanks in advance,

I don't know about the t-shirts, but Other Music and Mondo Kim's have large indie selections. There's a big thread in the archives somewhere about NYC record stores. Try the search function.

Also might want to try Generation for the apparel. It's on Thompson between Bleeker and 1st, I think.

I found the record stores in New York to be a real disappointment.

Poptones is American?

Poptones is American?
Isn't it? Well, it was just to give an idea anyway.

Rocks In Your Head, in Soho, is bigtime geared toward what you mentioned.

There is Other Music, Kim's has moved to 1st ave between 7th and St. Marks.
There is Gimme Gimme Records is on 5th St between 1st ave and 2nd ave.
The Academy Records in that area is between 1st ave and avenue A on 12th st.
Good Records is between 2nd ave and Bowery on 5th.

I chose these stores because they are all an easy stroll from each other.

Have fun!

Going up this Friday, how about the best used cd selection? Preferably Midtown or lower.

Kim's and Other Music are obvious choices, but if you want, we just got a lot of really great stuff in recently at Tunes in Hoboken, just across the river. It costs less than a subway ride to get here. just a 1.75 via PATH. Our whole store is mostly used items and we price them based on demand.

thanks for all the tips! went to both Academys, Kims, Other Music, Gimme Gimme was closed. Academy is by far the best of the lot. Other Music (which i used to love) is just feeling really tired, and i never can figure out their categories; meagre used vinyl.

Academy, on the other hand: both locations great. didn't buy much at all, but it was great fun nonetheless. really like the bright and spacious layouts of both locations (i'm old and i've done my time in crowded dark record stores!)
my little haul:
Bovine Over Sussex W. 10" (from the EV store)
The Only Ones-Even Serpents Shine
Richard Barone-Cool Blue Halo
Deerhunter-Microcastle the single one on white vinyl

i would've said hello, Ian--but while i was there i overheard two people come in asking for you; guess you were due in later. hopefully next time!
