I'd say image.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 26 April 2003 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

except jack black (oops, i mean white) is one ugly mofo. people w/funny looking bodies shouldn't wear tight clothes. and people w/ really white skin shouldn't dye their hair black

JasonD (JasonD), Saturday, 26 April 2003 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd say Hongro.

hstencil, Saturday, 26 April 2003 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

And all those red clothes! I could never share a washing machine with them, not ever!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 26 April 2003 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

:-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 26 April 2003 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Hopefully they don't wash all of their clothes at the same time, or their white clothes budget must be quite huge. :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 26 April 2003 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

melody + harmony + (calum x meg's breasts) - (months til xmas) / (bra size of all white stripes covers songwriters) = geirfactor

mookieproof (mookieproof), Saturday, 26 April 2003 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

both godfuckingdamn it

Adam A. (Keiko), Saturday, 26 April 2003 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to think image, but after seeing them on Conan, music please. It's all pretty ho-hum, but the image is downright disturbing. Refusing to wear make-up on TV (I can only assume that's it, cuz they can't possibly actually be *that* pale) is taking the whole "authenticity" thing a step too fucking far.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 26 April 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

that's funny then cuz that Jack White bitch wears makeup in every goddamn photo I've seen him in.

hstencil, Saturday, 26 April 2003 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Let's put it this way -- their image bugs the snots out of me (they so don't need it), but I still love their music. So basically, Geir, you're WRONG!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 26 April 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd say the image is kind of cool. Their music, though, bores me. Nothing the garage bands didn't do 30 years ago, and garage rock wasn't any good either.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 26 April 2003 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Nothing the garage bands didn't do 30 years ago....

Oh, don't get me wrong -- I never said they were original in the slightest, just that they're just quite good at what they do.

...and garage rock wasn't any good either.

Geir, your sweeping condemnations shock even me.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 26 April 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, both. although i don't like their music. but some do.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Saturday, 26 April 2003 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

the image has definitely placed them in a better position to gain media coverage than their music alone and i've only ever lsitened to two songs by them ever, so image it is. i like their look and styling, didn't like their songs. for once i agree with Geir - not too much but enough to bother me!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Saturday, 26 April 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

their image roxx
their music is okay

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 26 April 2003 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Image, but did we really need another White Stripes thread?

disco stu (disco stu), Sunday, 27 April 2003 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

"Let's put it this way -- their image bugs the snots out of me (they so don't need it) "

As Jack put it, he's just doing what all the old blues singers did. They would get dressed up like they were going to church.

To me, the whole punk rock image of "We're just average guys, we don't HAVE an image" is boring and stupid. No matter what you do, you're going to have an image, so you might as well make the best of it.

David Allen, Sunday, 27 April 2003 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Nothing the garage bands didn't do 30 years ago....

Actually, Jack does do something the garage acts didn't. He whines like a little pussy boy.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 27 April 2003 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

And The Stripes do one other thing garage bands didn't do, which is to aspire specifically to being a garage band.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 27 April 2003 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

come with me now as we venture back in time...

ah, i remember this place; it's the crocodile cafe in seatlle circa 2001. about 30 people in crowd. the von bondies just finished their set. and now another detroit band (hence the city flag hung behind the drum kit)... it's the white stipes. i've heard about these two - they did that song about that monkey exploding, right? they're touring because they just released a new album (de stijl). aren't they brother & sister? sure there's red pants and white t-shirts and a peppermint base drum, but it's definitely not the overblown image of the future. *sound of first chord and I'm a fan for life! where's the merchandise table; i'm leaving with stijl.

Yes, we must return now. I'd love to stay but we need to prepare for the innevitible hype for rock's new red & white clad saviors and for the innevitible backlash by poopy pants everywhere. Just remember that before lego videos and midnight release sales @ your local reckid shop, the white stripes won you not their color coordination but with a distorted as fuck slide guitar and a primitive beat.

And thus ends this week's Weekend Update, Jane you ignorant slut.

Too much actually discussion, not enough notice of what Michael did up there with the laundry joke.

I love the White Stripes, and I think a good deal of that is that I don't notice their image at all, what with not watching tv or reading music press. The only reason I'm aware of their image is really because of this message board--and quite honestly, I'm still not sure what their image is, besides dumb clothes. Jack White is kind of cute.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 27 April 2003 05:02 (twenty-two years ago)

This band is very there for me. In the sense of, "Ah, a band. Yes, there they are."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 27 April 2003 05:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't care at all for the image thing, nor the "Is he her brother or her ex-husband?" thing. I just care about the music. The greatest, er, rock and roll band in the world?

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Sunday, 27 April 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i like the music AND the image equally - both are equally powerful.

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 27 April 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

White Stripes are the best thing to happen to music in ages.

Geir likes Coldplay and Travis (And the Lightning Seeds! And Dodgy!). Nuff said.

Calum, Sunday, 27 April 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

pah, lightning seeds used to be great.

keith (keithmcl), Sunday, 27 April 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

coldplay, travis, lightning seeds and dodgy all have at least a couple of songs i like...i guess white stripes have more

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 27 April 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

three years pass...
What a crap thread!

what a crap thread!, Sunday, 30 April 2006 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

yes

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 30 April 2006 19:42 (nineteen years ago)

No pictures of Meg White, no credibility.

Bring Me The Head of ESTEBAN BUTTEZ (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Sunday, 30 April 2006 19:44 (nineteen years ago)

This is by far the best White Stripes thread. Both short and pointless. I'd draw parallels to them as a band but I don't have a ruler.
