even the other lists include non-Hawaiian performers who adopted/adapted Hawaiian music/techniques

but this thread is for more tenuous connections:
music inspired by Hawaii
or maybe just stuff which makes you think of Hawaii or that might sound good there

Beach Boys - "Diamond Head" & "Pet Sounds"

Jimi Hendrix - "Pali Gap"

Ry Cooder - "Chloe"

Search Slidin' on the Frets (comp of music of many genres using the Hawaiian guitar)

There's all that whole subgenre of Island-sounding music that gets played on Hawaiian stations all the time, like the Kinks' "Come Dancing" and Jimmy Buffett's "Margaritaville."

The Hawaiians in general don't seem to have much of a problem with the bowdlerization of their own culture. [/superficial impression]

nice input on those earlier threads, amateurist, and you reminded me:
The Kinks - "Holiday In Waikiki"

the ersatz-hawaiian marty robbins 45 i just bought ("aloha'e") would fit into this category i suppose. hawaii is an important part of the 20th c. american middle-class imagination as innumerable hollywood movies will tell you. a major part of bing crosby's ouevre, and the whole of american pop music until the 1960s really, was ersatz hawaiian material. i used to be skeptical of all this until i visited and then i was like, "duh." it's easy to feed your fantasties after just spending a week in the place. good lord.

Taj Mahal did a Hawaiian Blues alb a year or two ago. Can't think of the name off the top of my head, and too lazy to go downstairs (next week I'm moving into a bachelor suite, so look out ILX, I'll KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT).

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Sunday, 27 April 2003 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Also there are a couple of HW-ish songs on Junior Brown's album, uh shit. Can't think of the name, it's either his first or second, it's his best alb, so like, the one you probably already own.
