(Keep in mind that I've never heard a White Stripes album all the way through and I haven't listened to a Black Crowes record since 1990 or something.)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 27 April 2003 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The White Stripes haven't given birth to 80 billion bar bands yet so they win.... for now...

I still remember seeing the Crowes walking across the street before their show at Irving Plaza that i was going to (Sonic Youth sans preggers Kim was the opening act, billed as 'male slut'). Never in my life have i seen doods that looked so much like rock stars off stage. And i've been five feet from keith richards. But the show sucked. Also, all they have to say is rock 'n roll, like, roxors, and, oh yeah, life on the road doing lots of drugs is really wearing. Bold new stuff (though I admit I liked their open-chord blooze before it got too smarmy). Jack White may be a reactionary old-fogey (oh wait, i am too), but at least he's smart. And he and meg play well with each other - very charming. (i will not go on and on about how she is the cutest ever. i will not.)

That's coz she IS NOT, right?

jm (jtm), Sunday, 27 April 2003 04:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Black Crowes! Shake Your Money Maker is a great album, and I've only heard two White Stripes songs.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 27 April 2003 07:54 (twenty-two years ago)

the Black Crowes had a couple awesome songs.

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 27 April 2003 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Black Crowes sound like Rolling Stones while White Stripes sound like The Stooges.

In other words: An easy win for Black Crowes here.

*WHONK*

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Sunday, 27 April 2003 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

the white stripes sound nothing like the stooges.

stevie (stevie), Sunday, 27 April 2003 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

ALL unlistenable noise sounds like the stooges'

Geir Homegrown, Sunday, 27 April 2003 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

The Black Crowes are undeniably more Rock'N'fuckin'Roll!, but not in any particularly interesting way. First album has, what, maybe four classic-ish tunes (counting the kick-ass Otis Redding cover), the second one another one or two. After that, pretty unlistenable -- literally. I tried to make it through a promo copy of their last one (or maybe the one before, I've lost track), and even as background music I had to turn it off after about four interminable noodly tracks.

White Stripes, hands down.

I keep expecting Geir to ask me, "WHAT DO YO WANNA DO WITH YOUR LIFE?!"

David Allen, Sunday, 27 April 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

White Stripes. A bit more edgy & creative.

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Sunday, 27 April 2003 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

More annoying people tend to sing along to The Black Crows when I hear them played in public
White Stripes

brg30 (brg30), Sunday, 27 April 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

People singing along is a quality sign.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 27 April 2003 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

White Stripes, but not because they're an ounce more creative. It's a matter of taste and nothing but, I'd argue. I just like the Nuggets/Kinks sound better than the Thin Lizzy/Uriah Heep sound.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 28 April 2003 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Shit. Sorry. Not Uriah Heep. Humble Pie. I just woke up from dreams about JBR, so cut me some slack.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 28 April 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

!?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 28 April 2003 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I dreamed you were OTM. This place is getting to me.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 28 April 2003 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

four years pass...

any change in opinions since the White Stripes got all Zepped out?

milo z, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 03:29 (eighteen years ago)

Wait, you mean they weren't before?

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 03:36 (eighteen years ago)

The idea of these two bands being pitted against each other just makes my stomach turn.

Bimble, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 03:52 (eighteen years ago)

It's a lazy comparison, that's turned into cliche long ago. Does Jack's vocals sound like Robert's sometimes? Maybe. Aesthetically, I hear just as much Badfinger or Screamin Jay Hawkins in their music, as I do Zeppelin. That is if a comparison has to be made, which it doesn't of course.

nicky lo-fi, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 04:00 (eighteen years ago)

jody have you still never heard a white stripes album all the way through?

J.D., Tuesday, 29 May 2007 05:20 (eighteen years ago)

this is a tough one actually...first 2 crowes records are classic material, actually they all might be i've never heard anything from the later era.

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 17:22 (eighteen years ago)
