Ten best songs of the New Millennium so far... and the ten worst...

What are the ten that have defined your past three years the best or just make you a very happy camper? And what are the ten that make you seriously ill - that will make you walk right out of a night club to the bar to drown your sorrows (unless your Ronan in which case you're sitting at home wondering about why anyone would ever go out on the pull anyway as such acts are sexist)? What makes you happy to be alive? What makes you wish you weren't alive? Here's my picks...

1) Hotel Yorba - The White Stripes (this is truely the beginning of a beautiful friendship)

2) The Facts of Life - Black Box Recorder (just excellent)

3) The Trees/ Sunrise - Pulp (my fave band of the 90s returns with this awesome release)

4) The Dark is Rising - Mercury Rev (lovely)

5) Miss Lucifer - Primal Scream (just rocks!!!)

6) Freak Like Me - Sugababes (the best pop of the decade so far)

7) All the Things She Said - TaTu (although this comes close)

8) Slave to the Wage - Placebo (I just love the sentiments)

9) The Hindu Times - Oasis (I thought this was their best song in eons)

10) Hard to Explain - The Strokes (not worthy of the hype, but this single got my hopes maybe a bit TOO high up for the album)

AND THE WORST:

1) Yellow - Coldplay (headache inducing)

2) Look at Me - Geri Halliwell (vile)

3) Coming Around - Travis (painful)

4) Californication - The Red Hot Chilli Peppers (inspires vomit)

5) The Ketchup Song - Las Ketchup (annoying)

6) Spirit in the Sky - Gareth Gates (shite)

7) Life is a Rollercoaster - Ronan (utterly shite)

8) That Nelly/ Kelly Rowland song (I try and avoid hip hop/ rap and r and b, but this was on all the time and it sucks)

9) Jenny for the Block - J-Lo (Irony - J-Lo does not understand this word, or the word 'condesending' either)

10) Mr Writer - Stereophonics (pisspoor)

Calum, Sunday, 27 April 2003 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

4) Californication - The Red Hot Chilli Peppers (inspires vomit)

This one is from 1999

Btw. your list (particularly the latter one) is of course completely wrong. :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 27 April 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I am outraged, how can you do this. Does my bum look big? You are a sexist. Am I a sexist? What the fizzuck

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 27 April 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Why does everybody hate Coldplay?

Evan (Evan), Sunday, 27 April 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Drrty needs to be in the top 10 somewhere.

jm (jtm), Sunday, 27 April 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

...unless your Ronan in which case you're sitting at home wondering about why anyone would ever go out on the pull anyway as such acts are sexist...

!!!

Cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 27 April 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

- - Anon. Poster (Poster@postercity.com), April 27th, 2003

jm (jtm), Sunday, 27 April 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Exactly.

jm (jtm), Sunday, 27 April 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

9) Jenny for the Block - J-Lo (Irony - J-Lo does not understand this word, or the word 'condesending' either)

!!!

Cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 27 April 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

6. The Sugababes - "Freak Like Me"
7. The Strokes - "The Modern Age"

10. Various Artists - "What's Going On"

Evan (Evan), Sunday, 27 April 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Oops I did it Again is so much better than anything by Coldplay that it's not even funny.

Calum, Sunday, 27 April 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Why does everybody hate Coldplay?

Because Chris Martin is actually a nice guy, and there is sort of an unwritten rule that any indie frontman is supposed to be an arrogant fuck telling all the world about how much better his band is than everybody else.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 27 April 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Why does everybody like Yo La Tengo?

Cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 27 April 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

why does everyone hate Calum and Geir?

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 27 April 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

btw Black Box recorder's 'The Facts Of Life' is from before 2000 surely

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 27 April 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

why does everyone hate Calum and Geir?

I don't hate them at all, in fact I'm sure I'd like them IRL. But they've made ILM almost unreadable for me.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 27 April 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I think loads of Britney's stuff was great, but I esp. like Oops, Lucky and Stronger.

Calum, Sunday, 27 April 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

ten best
Felix - Silver Screen Shower Scene
Zero 7 - This World
Roots Manuva - Witness (One Hope)
Basement Jaxx - Romeo
Broadcast - Papercuts
Doves - There Goes The Fear
The Strokes - The Modern Age
The Streets - Has It Come To This?
Ladytron - The Way That I Found You
Dizzy Rascal - I Love You (***TOKEN ILM-COMPATIBLE 'HIP' INCLUSION, altho i DO love it lots)

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 27 April 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

my 'ten worst' list would be even more boring i guarantee you

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 27 April 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know the names of anyone from Coldplay, nor do I know how nice they may or may not be. I do know that their music is predictable and hackneyed to the Nth - I can hear every change coming a mile away and I'm sick of them by the time they reach my ears. I don't hate Calum or Geir, either! BUT, it must be said, the same things that bother me about Coldplay bother me about Calum AND Geir.

matt riedl (veal), Sunday, 27 April 2003 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

My favorites are:
Basement Jaxx - Romeo
Mouse On Mars - Paradical
Underworld - Two Months Off
The Strokes - The Modern Age
Dizzy Rascal - I Love U
Justin Timberlake - Cry Me A River
Ghostface Killah - Cherchez La Ghost
Black Dice - The Dream Is Going Down
The Thermals - I Know the Pattern
Jay-Z - The Takeover

Adam A. (Keiko), Sunday, 27 April 2003 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I cannot believe that we are on ILM discussing the best songs of this millennium and Missy hasn't been mentioned yet.

Nick H, Sunday, 27 April 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

b

basement jaxx: romeo
erlend øye: sudden rush

Jay K (Jay K), Sunday, 27 April 2003 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I find a worst list pointless. However, here are my favourite best songs of the millennium:

1. Silent To The Dark - Electric Soft Parade
2. There Goes The Fear - Doves
3. Harbour Smiles - The Margarets
4. Flowers In The Window - Travis
5. Who Feels Love - Oasis
6. Words - Doves
7. Dear Diary - Travis
8. Politik - Coldplay
9. I Used To Be Scared - Number Seven Deli
10.Yoshimi Vs. The Pink Robots - Flaming Lips

Don't feel like making a "worst of" list. Songs that are among a lot of other people's favourites obviously don't belong in a "worst of" list anyway

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 27 April 2003 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

there is sort of an unwritten rule that any indie frontman is supposed to be an arrogant fuck

Why aren't Flaming Lips hated as much as Coldplay, then?

man, Monday, 28 April 2003 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Why aren't Flaming Lips hated as much as Coldplay, then?

Because this rule is written by NME writers and applies to UK acts mainly

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 28 April 2003 00:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Geir NME LOVE Coldplay you fishbrain! They have a three page layout on them this week calling them great and hailing Chris Martin as sexy (pfffft).

This is what fucks me off about Coldplay (and it's not the lead singer's lack of arrogance, I was really moved by how humble Jonathan from Mercury Rev was at his reception at T in the Park last year for instance)...

1) They suck. As in REALLY suck. When I heard Yellow I thought it was shit. Then I read all the hype and thought: "Hmm, maybe it's just me" but then I realised TO FUCK WITH THE HYPE IT DOES SUCK and it sucks bad. My head hurts whenever I hear Yellow.

2) I think I might be allergic. My guts do funny things when I hear Coldplay, I start to honestly feel really sick - which is a revelation I usually only experience upon hearing the Chilli Peppers, Travis, Stereophonics or Ronan Keating.

3) Chris Martin is an ugly fucking bastard and all he did in his early interviews was point out that, yes he is tortured, because he couldn't get laid until he was 22 mainly because he is an ugly bastard. Now he's happy to walk the streets with A-list stars on his arm without thinking: "Hmm, I was an ugly bastard before I wrote some songs and became tabloid fodder and now I'm being shagged by all and sundry". OK, so a huge amount of women do tend to fall all over anything that happens to be famous (witness - Liam Gallagher) but I kinda like my stars who don't exploit these brainless ninnies and Chris Martin is not one.

4) They are so fucking boring. Who are Coldplay anyway? All I know is Chris.

5) They say nothing to me. About anything. They just bore me to tears.

I HATE COLDPLAY MORE THAN ANY OTHER BAND IN EXISTENCE AND WISH TO FUCK THEY WOULD PISS OFF.

Calum, Monday, 28 April 2003 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

"Coming Around" is Travis' second best tune!

I hereby admit to liking Coldplay. That said, I would never choose to make music like theirs.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 28 April 2003 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

hehe ... very entertaining, calum. good writing, although you didn't really say anything new. but extremely funny, i'll give you that! everybody should say 'fishbrain' more often.

Jay K (Jay K), Monday, 28 April 2003 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

What the shit. I'm sick of people hating on MJ's Rock My World. One of the few pieces of his recent material where he sounds human. The verse melody is awesome. Something of a retro track, it almost sounds as if it could have been on BAD, but with a modern r&b rhythm. The Remix with Jay-Z is awesome as well, perhaps, dare I say, awesomer.

theodore fogelsanger, Monday, 28 April 2003 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I cannot believe that we are on ILM discussing the best songs of this millennium and Missy hasn't been mentioned yet.

"Work It" was #11 on my "Worst" list.

I think I'd put "Play" on my best list too Sterling. It feels like it should be there. I'm definitely trotting out a good dozen or so times at my birthday party.

Music from 2000 is technically part of the last millennium, isn't it?

Cunga (Cunga), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 03:13 (nineteen years ago)

There should be one of these for covering 01 May 2003 until 31 August 2006. I'm not even sure if I'm kidding or not.
