Homer Banks, RIP

Homer Banks died this week. He was never a real big name, but he was a fine soul singer, and a great songwriter. He was part of Stax's second team, but nonetheless wrote some of their very biggest and best. Rock fans here may know his work best through Elvis Costello's cover of 'I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down', but he also wrote 'If Loving You Is Wrong (I Don't Want To Be Right)', 'If You're Ready (Come Go With Me)' and 'Who's Making Love' among a large number of others.

Rest in peace.

I'm glad Costello covered "I Can't Stand Up" but the Sam & Dave orig. is certainly one of the greatest Stax moments. A moment of silence, as we find a suitably secluded parking space at our favorite hourly motel on the wrong side of the tracks, for the man who wrote "Who's Making Love" (hopefully Homer and Johnnie Taylor are chasing married women in their own section of the hereafter, with plenty of Chivas).
