Westlife: C/D?, Sunday, 27 April 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Westlife are so dud it's not even funny. Sometimes, as bands reach the ends of their careers, you get a bit of misplaced nostalgia. Westlife were so utterly uneventful you don't even get that, cos there's next to nothing to remember.

They Came. They Sat. They Stood Up For A Bit.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 27 April 2003 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

So they've had about 9 number ones but can anyone remember any of them apart from "Flying Without Wings", notable only for its total and utter formulaicness.

Nick H, Monday, 28 April 2003 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Sometimes, a boy band appears that surprises you by releasing one or two good songs.

Westlife is not such a band..

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 28 April 2003 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, they didn't have much pop fizz, they just sang Boring Ballads and were Boring. "world of our own" was quite good, but they remain a Dud.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 28 April 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

'world of our own' is brilliant.

(i haven't forgotten the cd kilian, i'll be seeing my cd-burner-owning friend on saturday).

michael wells (michael w.), Monday, 28 April 2003 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

:-)

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 28 April 2003 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i love westlife. i get the feeling ILM would like them better if they were teenage girls in skimpy outfits. they have some pretty songs, i can't remeber what they're called tho cos they all sound pretty similar.

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 28 April 2003 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

"World of our own" was just a rip-off of the middle eight in Robbie Williams' "Millenium".

man, Monday, 28 April 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, ILM likes The Backstreet Boys and N'Sync just fine!

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Monday, 28 April 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

(re: di's post)

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Monday, 28 April 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

true, but i think ILM would like nsync and the backstreet boys more if they were teenage girls in skimpy outfits too.

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 28 April 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, yeah. I'm just sayin' Westlife seems to have something *else* about them that turns ppl off than just the fact that they're not gurls.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Monday, 28 April 2003 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Perhaps because they suck.

Ronan Keating solo I've heard more than Westlife, though. And I'll say this -- awful as Timberlake solo is, Keating is worse.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I feel that Keating solo has worked surprisingly well, although not quite the quality of George Michael's and Robbie Williams' solo material, of course.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 09:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Westlife are the anti-5ive & thus the worst thing evah.

Ess Kay (esskay), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 09:31 (twenty-two years ago)

"And I'll say this -- awful as Timberlake solo is, Keating is worse."

i liked that "life is a rollercoaster" song by ronan. better than anything he did with boyzone. maybe bryan macfadden will come into his own as a solo artist...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

what the hell is so good about 'world of our own'? has nothing distinguishable from any of their other songs to these ears

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"World Of Our Own" is the worst one (that I can remember anyway). It just stumbles over itself before running out of anything resembling an idea so it just goes up an octave in the most obvious fashion ever heard.

Nick H, Tuesday, 29 April 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

worst thing ever

robin (robin), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Having been listening to the Popular CDs I have discovered two things:

1/ Westlife are the only group to have based an entire career on "Mull Of Kintyre". Particularly "Queen Of My Heart" which is kind of the OPO: Westlife, it tells you everything you could possibly need to know about them.

2/ Their songs sound a lot better than I thought they would. I still don't think I like them but I 'get' them more.

2a/ Except for "World Of Our Own" which is GHASTLY.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I would like to apologise for this revival not being some mental Googler or Googlette shouting holla to Kian and the boys.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Phew, am I glad we have you around to do exactly this sort of good work. Well done.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Now reward yourself by listening to a Whigfield album.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

A Whigfield album, or THE...?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Carefully select a werk form the entire Whigfield ouevre.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean "from". Oh, forget it.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

This reminds me that I need an MP3 of "Think Of You"

one year passes...
Uh-oh. They must have another album out this autumn, right?

Westlife singer Mark Feehily has revealed he is gay.

The Irish-born singer said the time was right to let people know the truth.

He said: "I am gay and I'm very proud of who I am. I'm not asking for any sympathy or to be a role model to anyone else."

He added he was not worried about how people will react because he was happy being himself.

"My close friends and family, the people I love, have been incredibly supportive to me and that's what really matters."

Feehily, 25, from Sligo, north west Ireland, is currently in a long-term relationship with singer Kevin McDaid, 21, who was in a boyband called V.

Feehily said all the band members have been very supportive.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Friday, 19 August 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

So Britain still has boybands?

THE BASTARD. I'm so jealous. KEVIN!

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 19 August 2005 10:01 (twenty years ago)

Seriously though, V were great, and they all seemed like kind of fun pop-star types and one of them is in a long-term relationship with one of WESTLIFE.

DOES NOT COMPUTE.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 19 August 2005 10:02 (twenty years ago)

nine months pass...
you lozers, dont you have anything better to do then mock westlife? if they were that bad they wouldn't be still around, they're only around coz people buy they're singles and albums and go to their concerts, so the majority of the people like westlife and don't think they are 'dud' so go live in a hole u imbosiles.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Monday, 4 February 2008 20:27 (eighteen years ago)

Why were Westlife on the South Bank Show awards last night? Has Louis Walsh got something on Melvyn Bragg, ironic po-mo joke or sign of an impending critical appraisal?

Billy Dods, Monday, 4 February 2008 21:20 (eighteen years ago)

i met mjw at poptimism -- pretty deece guy when sober.

has he learned how to spell?

The Real Dirty Vicar, Monday, 4 February 2008 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

i think affecting a lack of spelling ability is a well-established poptimist meme, no?

FAO: markers. We need you over on this thread.

psychedelicatessen (seandalai), Wednesday, 19 October 2011 19:07 (fourteen years ago)

Walsh said the band wanted to "go out on top" and "not be like other boy bands". He said the group were "great ambassadors to Ireland" and that they would continue to work in the entertainment area.

I am "completely devastated" and "at the end of my tether". But "what doesn't kill me makes me fart".

"great ambassadors to Ireland" on behalf of the government of... ?

Lars and the Lulu Girl (NickB), Wednesday, 19 October 2011 21:22 (fourteen years ago)
