You found that WHERE?

I spent part of the afternoon scouting the Goodwill and Value Village locations nearby for interesting things in the record dump near the backs of the stores; most of the time the stuff I find in there is almost completely worthless--either from the perspective of what it is or how scratched up it is--but occasionally I find some real gems. Today I found some 7-inch singles in pristine condition at one of them, including a picture sleeve of New Order's Bizarre Love Triangle.

What gems have you rescued from these discount bins? Also, what's the most unlikely place you've found something interesting?

Found last year: pink-vinyl version of the Pretty in Pink soundtrack at a garage sale just down the block from our old apartment!

absolutely mint copy of neil young's first lp in a goodwill store for a buck. without an inner or outer sleeve, stashed amidst a bunch of other naked records which were all totally scratched to death. i put the record into a clean-looking blue sleeve which was lying sandwiched between some montovani records, which on closer inspection turned out to be the inner sleeve to kraftwerk's autobahn. no wonder it was clean. this was my first visit to the store after moving there, and i was like, "what manner of magical goodwill store is this?"

Robbie Basho's Visions of the Country - in pristine condition inside and out, among hundreds of beat-up records being used to hold up a record bin (glutted with the usual Goodwill MOR dreck) at a HITW used bookstore. i imagine it has quite a tale to tell.

A bunch of LPs by Tones on Tale and His Name is Alive at the local Salvation Army. I wanted to hunt down whatever local dropped them off and ask them about it - why?

I found lying on the street a Tony Bennett album called "Hometown--My Town". It's kinda this conceptual thing about being alone in the big city. It was in primo shape, and turns out the music is fantastic; I've played it a lot. I've since discovered the album is a bit of a rarity; it doesn't appear to have been reissued since its original release, and it has never been on CD.

btw, Jody, how is "Let My People Come"? I always see ads for that in old issues of After Dark. Looks pretty funny.

Terrible! Creepy and pathetically unfunny early '70s sex humor. I can't listen to it cuz it reminds me of that copy of Joy of Sex I found on my parents' bookshelf...

*shudder*

after searching for it for nigh on half a decade,
in 1997 i found a copy of the chris heath/petshopboys
'anually' annual. it was in a basket in a bricabrac
store above a clothes shop.
i almost burst into tears with excitement.
