haven't been able to listen to them since a colleague of mine, who apparently loves them, was so drunk at a party that he couldn't pronounce their name. it sounded something like 'danny walls', and that was what i thought he said. when i kept asking him about who this magnificent danny walls actually was, he started pushing me and said he wanted to beat me up for being an arrogant fucker.

well, thank you, dandy fucking warhols!!!

Jay K (Jay K), Sunday, 27 April 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

my god the new signle is fucking terrible

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 28 April 2003 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

The album's not particularly good either. The single is extremely indicative. Suppose if one likes that one will like the album. "You Were The Last High" is good though.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 28 April 2003 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris Barrus has mentioned his hatred of it. He's probably right.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 28 April 2003 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

come back Kate, all is forgiven! Hopefully this surreptitious mention of *dirty dronerock boys* will drag her blinking back into the sunlight to tell us what the new Dandys stuff is *really* like.

Not heard diddly-squat meself.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 28 April 2003 02:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I love it. What's wrong with me? I mean, I never really cared too much about them before. Maybe it's the Nick Rhodes involvement. What's the single?

Arthur (Arthur), Monday, 28 April 2003 03:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually haven't hit the "hatred" stage of it yet... I'm still in the "What the hell? Did they REALLY want it to sound like that stage?"

Nick Rhodes was mixed up with it?

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Monday, 28 April 2003 05:30 (twenty-two years ago)

The new single(whatever its called)=APPALLING!
I don't even remember how it sounds like, just how terrible it was when i heard it.

rexJr., Monday, 28 April 2003 05:51 (twenty-two years ago)

You are all wrong. The new Dandy Warhols album is their BEST YET!!! They have abandonned all pretentions of RAWK and just become PURE SHINING DURAN DURAN!!! YOU GO, BOYS, YOU GO!!! The living out of teenage dreams in public is to be highly encouraged. Get Nick Rhodes in. Get Nile Rodgers and Tony Vicsonti in. Go for the style, baby, GO FOR THE GLAMOUR!!!

They take dronerock principles - texture, harmony, the drone - and apply them to swaggering glamrock to make music that is both arrogant and intriguing.

I love it more than life.

kate, Monday, 28 April 2003 07:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I especially love it because it is a massive fuck off FUCK YOU to the people who wrote them off as Stones copyist new rawk on the back of that Vodafone ad. It takes a certain kind of arrogance to turn around and make a complete about-face after your biggest single. I would have respect for them just on the basis of that, even if the new album were not GODLIKE GENIUS.

kate, Monday, 28 April 2003 07:38 (twenty-two years ago)

there should be some sort of law to prevent The Dandy Warhols and "genius" being used in the same sentence.

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 28 April 2003 07:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Doesn't take a genius to figure it out, don't have to be fucking brilliant to see, I'm not as smart as I seem...

BUT!!! The Dandy Warhols are still genius. Face it.

kate, Monday, 28 April 2003 08:18 (twenty-two years ago)

It might scare off some of the Vodafone-fans, but old fans will probably still dig it. At least I do.

zilverberg.tk (zilverberg.tk), Monday, 28 April 2003 08:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Exactly. People who love them for the Duran Duran/Love and Rockets link will still go bananas (heh heh) for it.

Half the album, you can sing "Friends of Mine" along with, the other half, you can sing the slow version of "Mirror People" along with. G.E.N.I.U.S.!!!

kate, Monday, 28 April 2003 08:29 (twenty-two years ago)

i liked the vodafone single

gareth (gareth), Monday, 28 April 2003 08:34 (twenty-two years ago)

You would, you rockist!

kate, Monday, 28 April 2003 08:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm just not feeling the Duran Duran link. WHERE ARE THE STONKING POP HITS? How can you be Duran Duran without stonking pop hits?

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 28 April 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Hello? I Am A Scientist?

About as stonking a pop hit as you can get!

kate, Monday, 28 April 2003 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

And doesn't "You Were The Last High" sound a bit like Depeche Mode's "Policy Of Truth" to you? I've been listening to it all weekend and I love it...I respect them for taking new chances, and there are plenty of kick-ass singles. Love the falsetto vocals, too.

Erick H (Erick H), Monday, 28 April 2003 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh my god. They've gone Duran Duran?! This is the best news of the day for me.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 28 April 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i downloaded their new album a few weeks ago, listened to most of it, and promptly deleted it. just downloaded it again to give it another chance (i must be a masochist). yup, still hate it.

Andrew Calaman (Andrew Calaman), Monday, 28 April 2003 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Courtney Taylor made a better bouncer at Starry Night than a songwriter or performer. Talk about your arch paint by numbers pastiche and musical sleeping pill.

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 28 April 2003 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i think the new single is fine - very headcatchy, i've never been that big on the band tho

stevem (blueski), Monday, 28 April 2003 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

the falsetto (?) vocals all through the new single is what totally destroys it for me

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 28 April 2003 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, You Were The Last High does remind me of Policy Of Truth. Explains why it's the best thing on there.

I Am A Scientist is not a stonking pop hit. Duran Duran laugh at you all.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 00:56 (twenty-two years ago)

People who love them for the Duran Duran/Love and Rockets link will still go bananas (heh heh) for it.

Uh, based on initial evidence, I am disproving your theory. Duran Duran is supposed to make you feel vibrant and alive, and that is not what this is doing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

"I Am Sound" is way too close to "Ashes To Ashes" for me to take it seriously.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

after the second or third listen to the album, the single is the worst thing on it. by far.

bucky wunderlick (bucky), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

DW don't need indie promotion, they got Kate alone to spread their word. All she asks for is the shirts of their backs.

Doesn't take a genius to figure it out, don't have to be fucking brilliant to see, I'm not as smart as I seem...

daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarling,
score 3 points for SH Plunger.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
Sigh.

I was actually looking for a Love & Rockets thread, and I got this instead. Go away you mean people, I have a headache.

Even HSA likes the new Dandys album. U R Gay.

kate (kate), Friday, 6 June 2003 08:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the new Dandy Warhols album. I love the single (it's "We Used To Be Friends") though it always reminds me of Feeder's "Day In Day Out". And my favourite song is the last track. And I loved the Vodafone track as well. Duh.

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Friday, 6 June 2003 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I love it more every day.

Arthur (Arthur), Friday, 6 June 2003 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

ten years pass...

Against all odds, their new live album is pretty good. I put it on out of morbid curiosity, but it's actually well played, well recorded, and sometimes improves on album versions. Weird.

dlp9001, Friday, 2 May 2014 15:39 (eleven years ago)

Oh, but they chose the most boring album
