"Virginia Plain"

I am but a casual fan (read: I am American), but for me the answer would have to be In Every Dream Home a Heartache, preferably the version from Viva Roxy! It makes me laugh with its ridiculousness in thehyperdrama of its lyrics and dynamics, and how much it rocks.

I really really love "Sea Breezes". It's like one of those multi-part prog epic 70s genesis songs, only there are only two parts because they wanted to make them good. Honestly, it was a few listens before I even noticed the first part - the pretty part - because it's just so breezy. The perfect melody to carry that lyric (what a fantastic lyric that is, too), it's dangerously wistful, but still there's so much release on the "in looooooooove". And then, as great as the song is, it's the sonic release of the second part esp. that gets me. The bass sounds so strange, out of tune syncopated etc., and the percussion seems so amateur. Only three chords too, I think. The bridge would've made a good nomination for the "non-vu vu songs" thread, piece of minimalist "avant garde in quotes" brilliance that it is.

Someone said they liked the first Roxy Music album best because they ran out of ideas after that. They could have got halfway through their career on this idea alone!

I don't normally answer these threads, but I cannot avoid saying MORE THAN THIS

the pinefox, Monday, 28 April 2003 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

this is the first one of these threads i've actually felt capable of answering.

alex in nyc is correct.

"If There Is Something" is my fave by far.I could easily pick ten Roxy songs though.

Hey, I started a Roxy Music POX a while ago and people complained it was impossible to do! So now you want only one? ONLY ONE?

Sunset.

I said it before (on the last opo thread), and I'll say it again. Editions Of You.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 28 April 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

One of my favorite bands ever, so no way can I pick only one, but yeah "Virginia Plain" sums them up pretty well. "Editions of You" is fab, it goes without saying...

first answer is the best. mother of pearl is so close to perfection I find myself listening to it over and over and over again.

Well I've been up all night again
Party-time wasting is too much fun
Then I step back thinking
Of life's inner meaning
And my latest fling
It's the same old story
All love and glory
It's a pantomime
If you're looking for love
In a looking glass world
It's pretty hard to find
Oh mother of pearl
I wouldn't trade you
For another girl
Divine intervention
Always my intention
So I take my time
I've been looking for something
I've always wanted
But was never mine
But now I've seen that something
Just out of reach - glowing -
Very Holy grail
Oh mother of pearl
Lustrous lady
Of a sacred world
Thus: even Zarathustra
Another-time-loser
Could believe in you
With every goddess a let down
Every idol a bring down
It gets you down
But the search for perfection
Your own predilection
Goes on and on and on and on
Canadian Club love
A place in the Country
Everyone's ideal
But you are my favorita
And a place in your heart dear
Makes me feel more real
Oh mother of pearl
I wouldn't change you
For the whole world
You're highbrow, holy
With lots of soul
Melancholy shimmering
Serpentine sleekness
Was always my weakness
Like a simple tune
But no dilettante
Filigree fancy
Beats the plastic you
Career girl cover
Exposed and another
Slips right into-view
Oh looking for love
In a looking glass world
Is pretty hard for you
Few throwaway kisses
The boomerang misses
Spin round and round
Fall on featherbed quilted
Faced with silk
Softly stuffed eider down
Take refuge in pleasure
Just give me your future
We'll forget your past
Oh mother of pearl
Submarine lover
In a shrinking world
Oh lonely dreamer
Your choker provokes
A picture cameo
Oh mother of pearl
So so semi-precious
In your detached world
Oh mother of pearl
I wouldn't trade you
For another girl
