Well, I'm sure there'll be some quibbling as to the proper definition of "New Wave," but might I suggest the basics....

rexJr., Monday, 28 April 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

recently renewed my acquaintance with all the releases of australian band The Reels. their albums are hard to get and they're somewhat inconsistent but definitely one of my favourites in that new wave, herky jery pop style.

phil turnbull (philT), Monday, 28 April 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, look for any of the "D.I.Y" albums on Rhino. They frequently show up as cut-outs for around a couple bucks a throw, and are loaded with good to great Punk & New Wave classics.

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Monday, 28 April 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

just about all of the New Wave goodies have been covered, but there are a few omissions. let me take the time now to remedy that:

gary numan's first two records -- the plan, which is pre-Tubeway Army [when he pretended to be punk to get signed) and tubeway army, both before he went full-tilt into synth-pop (i.e., there's lots of crunchy guitars):

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000006NTM.01._PE_SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00002EPLV.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

and i've always thought Elvis Costello (another glaring omission here, guys!) never outdid this year's model (which also rocks pretty hard):

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Elvis Costello couldn't "rock" if you ran a million volts thru his sorry singer-songwriter ass.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Dadaismus I kiss you.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Elvis Costello couldn't "rock" if you ran a million volts thru his sorry singer-songwriter ass.

vive la différence, i suppose

i just noticed that guoli said that he likes devo ... if he hasn't already and/or he likes the gary numan records i recommended, he should also check out replicas, pleasure principle, telekon, and dance.

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Elvis Costello couldn't "rock" if you ran a million volts thru his sorry singer-songwriter ass.

Oh hogwash! Listen to, say, "Goon Squad" on Armed Forces and tell me that doesn't thoroughly, credibly and certifiably ROCK!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree with Alex. Its only after "Almost Blue" that he started to morph into a neurotic James Taylor. Before that, he was an evil Nick Lowe.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

dave q, Thursday, 1 May 2003 09:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Not sure if someone already suggested her, but here it is 3:00 am and I'm bleary-eyed and dazed, but am BLASTING some vintage Lene Lovich mp3s (the singles, basically, "Lucky Number," "New Toy" and "It's You, Only You") and lemme tell ya......they fuckin' RAAWWWWWK! Sure, she had that oddball shtick and whatnot, but the sound is just so slammin'ly thick and chunky. Big boomin' drums, thick, throbbin' bass....what's not to love? Check her out if you haven't, o seeker of underappreciated New Wave.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 2 May 2003 06:05 (twenty-two years ago)

the feelies - crazy rhythms

the hype this had originally gotten in 1980 turned me off to it initially, but it's impossible not to get lost in their workouts... perfected nervous white guy pop

Richard Hung Himce Elf, Friday, 2 May 2003 07:12 (twenty-two years ago)

You mean "High Land Hard Train", or is this something extremely unknown by the same act? :-)

See if you're going to correct someone? Try and get it right yourself, or you'll look even more foolish than you did by suggesting the Alarm are any good.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 30 October 2004 08:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll second Dr Mix & The Remix's Wall Of Noise. so n0i53!

Haaaaaitch (haitch), Saturday, 30 October 2004 09:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh heh...how many of these are actually "unknown"? Maybe half? Oh well; here's a not-unknown LP: The Waitresses, Wasn't Tomorrow Wonderful?

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Saturday, 30 October 2004 10:35 (twenty-one years ago)

the cover of SULK is the most outrageous thing ever.
