black on black crime?

matthew james (matthew james), Monday, 28 April 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

from the Other Music email mailing lists:

NegroClash is taking back electro! The current "electro" revival has
really been more about an ironic take on 1980s "Electro-Pop" than the
music, whose name is actually short for Electronic Funk. Electro was
in fact born out of hip-hop and dance music of the 1970s, as the first
drum machines and synthesizers became part of Black popular music
production.

Later in the decade, electronic sounds began seeping into the
nascent hip-hop culture, as b-boys in the South Bronx danced to
Kraftwerk's seminal "Trans-Europe Express," and Grandmaster Flash
began incorporating a drum machine into his performances.
NegroClash is a celebration of electronic sounds in Black music, and
all music influenced by the African Diaspora. With a true-school hip-
hop spirit, we'll play anything electronic, as long as it's got the funk.

You can expect to hear anything and everything, including Miles
Davis, Zapp, Juan Atkins, Kraftwerk, Prince, Mantronix, P-Funk,
Depeche Mode, Dego, New Order, Warp 9, Derrick May, Madonna,
The Neptunes, Afrika Bambaataa, Outkast and many more.

Nah, it's not a club. It's a night some friends of mine throw at a NYC bar/lounge called APT. The focus is on 80's r&b of the MIDI variety, urban electro (Soul Sonic Force, Mantronik), punk funk , Chicago/Detroit machine music --- basically the flip of the Electroclash influences. If you're ever in NYC you should check it out. Even though some fashion mag vultures have begun circling around and writing up the night, don't be put off. It's good fun.

So is it basically Bunker/Murder Capital-style retro-electro, or am I missing something?

Which DJ Language mix is this? I've got the Language Lab one which is kinda fun but nothing awesome. mixing is so one-handed, but apparently it takes us on a journey.

I thought it might have been a reference to "The Magnificent Seven."
