anyone heard the new MJ Cole album?
I haven't heard it all the way thru
but "Perfect Pitch" feat. Jill Scott, "Wondering Why" feat. Vula and "Ruff Like Me" feat. Rodney P
are good anchors for any album

...plus Elephant Man's on there!

every mj cole single i've heard recently has been fantastic, but that may be me pining for 99-era garridge.

still, he's no agent x who seems to have found a way to make pop-garage even tinnier, wobblier and more candyfloss than ever.

like if sfa's "flowers" is a krispy kreme then the agent x mix of "feel it boy" is a deep fried mars bar.

everyone should go download that mj cole/elephant man track "zoom zoom"...it's got nice creepy synth washes and elephant sez "shizzle my nizzle" at one point.

The problem is that, well, even if the singles (and record) are great (and fek they ARE), the man's a pompous arse. I can't forget the way he *worked* the crowd when I saw a few months back. I think my main problem with him is the fact his music is... too slick/well-constructed. Somehow it lacks *life.*

I would trade it all for the rekkids he made with Ramsey & Fen, but I'd be happy to know that the second album improved on the first.

the new mj cole stuff's just great. love the agent x/deep-fried mars bar analogy, jess! what about ed case? i'd say he's like that E-number-filled, flourescent, crackly, fizzy space dust stuff you used to be able to get as a kid... also probably of no interest but i managed to get elephant man to say shizzle my nizzle on tape when i interviewed him a couple of months ago... i used it as my answering service message for far too long!

that "Better Late Than Never" track on the Ed Case album was criminally overlooked. One of my favorite tracks from last year.

My jury is out on the new MJ Cole album, but it sounds like the non-single tracks on his last album - i.e. icy-cold and not sure if that's good or bad yet.

Obv. describing 2-step in terms of confectionary is the best, nay, ONLY way to approach this stuff. But Dave you're forgetting that Ed Case's stuff definitely has peanuts in it.

mj's overcomfort with where he is at the mo is maddening

This is one album desperatly in need of a a fair few remixes. It's way too polite. The (new version of) Ruff Like Me is the only track with any fire in it. Lyrical L and Jill Scott also give good performances (as expected) so I like those tracks too. I'd rather hear Elephant Man on an Elephant Man record than here. It's a shame, really, because MJ Cole's remixes (Roni Size, Mariah Carey, Roots Manuva) have been really good over the past few years.
