so there i am watching 'being there' again after years and years
when - what's this ? - as shirls maclaine changes the tv channels for
peter sellers in a limo, on comes this jackson 5-style
cartoon clip. it's this amazing semi pisstaking funny funk
thing with heavenly vocals and such. some googling reveals that
yes it does exist, and the identity of the aforementioned guest stars.
it's by cheech and chong, a stoner comedy duo i'm told, who i
know nuthing about.

'basketball jones' ???!! who knows more ?!!!!

You've never heard of Cheech and Chong?!??

Their routines really aren't that funny, no matter how many drugs you've ingested - you could compact all their decent material into maybe one hour-long show, which would also (incidentally) be packed with fairly entertaining cameos (Stacey Keach, PeeWee Herman, etc.) I have not, however, ever seen the original Basketball Jones bit, and seeing the cartoon in "Being There" (fantastic movie, btw) was also my first exposure to it.

Where/how the hell was this cartoon released? Is it on video or something? And did Ralph Bakshi have anything to do with it?

This is sort of an odd coincidence for me as i was singing this song to the fellas at work today and under furrowed brows they denied any knowledge of the track.

i came across it a mere five months ago while visiting a friend out west, he owned a 45 copy and it seemed familiar to me somehow.

i too would be interested in this cartoon video of basketball jones. if i'm remembering correctly it sort of looked 'fat albertish' on the limo télé, no?

Featuring Tyrone Shoelaces! It's a parody of the Brighter Side of Darkness' song "Love Jones", only it's better. Also featured on the record are Carole King, Billy Preston and Michelle Phillips.

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

And Klaus Voorhees!

Yay! My best friend and I put that song on a mix tape ("Wasn't That A Party Mix???") we made from our parents' record collection in grade seven. Also included: the Irish Rovers, Billy Connolly "In The Brownies", Fleetwood Mac "Second Hand News" (complete with huge skip when little brother knocked the stereo cabinet), Boney M. "Painter Man", Queen "Don't Try Suicide", Tom Jones "Help Yourself" (live in Vegas). Obv. this is my favourite tape ever.
