Not exactly earth-shattering news, but sad for fans, and I know there are many here.

that's too bad - I think his basswork was underrated as a factor in Low's sound.

mike a (mike a), Monday, 28 April 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

me and my girlfriend once spoke to him after a gig. he was nice. she thought he was good-looking, so she might be more disappointed about it than i am! i'm a huge low fan, but i don't think it will hamper them *that* much.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 28 April 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

He's definitely got a David Boreanaz thing going...

Pete Scholtes, Monday, 28 April 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

They should raffle off their drink tickets before shows now.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 28 April 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

they should play as a duo now and wear matching black and white clothes.

scott seward, Monday, 28 April 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

and legally become brother and sister? [insert mormon joke]

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 28 April 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Everytime I saw Low there was a lot of low level interpersonal tension going on.... lots of sighs, eyebrow raising and teethgrinding

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Monday, 28 April 2003 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd imagine being the bassplayer in Low would be a singularly unsatisfying experience

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 28 April 2003 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

not nearly as depressing as being their DJ, though

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 28 April 2003 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

seriously though, Low becoming a good band instead of an OK one coincides with Sally getting on board, this bodes poorly

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 28 April 2003 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

This is sad. I hope they carry on.

mei (mei), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 06:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i've seen alan and mimi perform with and without zak, they still move me like almost no other band can, if you haven't had the chance try to catch a show at the Sacred Heart Music Center.

Kim Tortoise, Tuesday, 29 April 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I think this would be a good opportunity to get wet and party

Sean Wesley Wood, Friday, 2 May 2003 05:30 (twenty-two years ago)

he's right you know

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 2 May 2003 05:46 (twenty-two years ago)

he was on stage with the Dirty Three last night. Damn was that a good show, and he seemed to enjoy being with them quite a bit.

doug (doug), Friday, 2 May 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

This is very, very sad news. I can't quite believe it. Zak's playing was just perfect for Low's songs. Understated but powerful. Never ever a single note out of place. I'm fuckin devastated, not to put too fine a point on it.

Petey, Friday, 2 May 2003 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Re: Zak's departure: Not really THAT surprising since Zak seemed to keep himself busy with many non-Low related projects over the past few years. I wouldn't be surprised if Low slowly winds down business as well since Hollis (Alan and Mimi's daughter) is rapidly approaching the age she should be going to school. I can't see Alan/Mimi shelling out $$ for a tutor and home-schooling is time consuming...

Scott, Wednesday, 7 May 2003 03:39 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
Um, false alarm.

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 22 May 2003 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh well, there are other fish in the sea.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 22 May 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Nordic is trying to make a point here and elsewhere, I deem. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 May 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

It's 2003, and there's so much great music out there! And more to come! :)

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 22 May 2003 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

What point? God I hate metaposts.

Pete Scholtes, Friday, 23 May 2003 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

No, it was pretty much a non-point actually. It was late and in the cold light of day, I would like to apologize to you sir for hijacking your announcement.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 23 May 2003 06:05 (twenty-two years ago)

my friend just posited the following conversation as having happened:

Zak: this really isn't going anywhere...i'm just a third wheel. I'm not
a mormon. I need to rock. Adios.
Alan: we're touring with radiohead this summer.
Zak: ooops....i I I just needed some space...it's cool.....can you tell
me more about joseph smith?
Mimi: huh...

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 23 May 2003 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
This time, for sure.

Pete Scholtes, Wednesday, 26 October 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

yeah right

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

to be honest i couldn't tell you the last time i particularly noticed a Low bassline

vacuum cleaner (electricsound), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 23:13 (twenty years ago)

Wow, it's weird to think that all these years I never actually saw Zak play with Low -- the only time I caught the band was two dates in 1993 and 1994.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

I think this time is definitely for definite. On the shows promoting TGD in the UK, Zak was doing a couple of songs with Kid Dakota and was having an order of magnitude more fun that he was with Low.

Zak added an awful lot on previous albums, but TGD is dominated (especially in the live show) by Sparhawk's gtr tantrums and so I can see how he felt marginalised.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 27 October 2005 08:10 (twenty years ago)

bugger. zak added a lot, and not just musically. he's also a lovely bloke: i've spoken to him at a couple of gigs.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 27 October 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

it doesn't really sound like he felt marginalized, I guess, after reading that article; sounds like he just wants to do other shit, which is understandable. good for him!

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 27 October 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

I don't see how Zak could help but have a load of fun playing alongside Kid Dakota's mentalist drummer!
