Uncut: Doubling In Price for Americans

Ok, all you Uncutters,

The Limey magazine that loves nothing more than American southerners singing about killing their girlfriends, the 'zine that has a new cover on Dylan, Springsteen, the Beatles or Straw Dogs every month, the rag that is still my favorite out there is fucking DOUBLING in price from $58 to $120 per year. Yes, that's right: $10 per issue (or like 9 billion squid or whatever you call them), despite the fact that the capsule reviews are now about as long as the titles of the albums they concern.

I can't tell you how legitimately angry about this I am. It's fucking robbery.

Marcello, et al, what's going on? I'm expecting reviews to consist of nothing more than thumbs-up and thumbs-down soon and the thing's gone up THAT much? Do you guys even know about this? Is this because we coerced you into the Coalition of the Willing?

For this we sent our boys to Baghdad?

Ha! They should put this on the masthead.

For this we sent our boys to Baghdad?

Apparently, yes. And still no chemical weapons.

Is the (US) single copy price (now $8 or so) going up also? I'm too lazy to subscribe, plus I figure the CD jewel case would get smashed in transit more often than not.

No idea; I only write reviews for the mag, I don't set its budgets.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 29 April 2003 09:37 (twenty-two years ago)

it's outrageous, yes, but not too much of a problem.

be a slob like dallas; go to your local newstand, stand there and skim through any interesting parts...repeat with mojo, q, anything else that strikes your fancy. if you start to feel like all the blood is draining from your head, or the owner yells 'hey kid, this ain't no library', then you head down to your local megastore (tower/virgin/borders/barnes & noble) where you can plop your ass down in a comfy chair and read to your heart's content. if you feel guilty for some reason, you can always drop some $ on a cup of coffee or something...

Uncut wants Americans to stay po', broke n' lonely so that they keep making that high lonesome music!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I've now taken out an entire year's worth of Wire from the library; I'm the only person to ever take them out. Madness. So, Mr. Weiner, friend, colleague, I suggest you get down your local limey music mag library and take 'em out... Or, if that's not possible, marry an English woman and get her parents to mail it to you. Or... Yes. Quite.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

the last library in america closed its doors in 1982.

Dallas Yertle (Dallas Yertle), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:46 (twenty-two years ago)

marry an English woman and get her
parents to mail it to you

Actually, I am doing this in reverse for back issues of Punk Planet!!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

You married an english woman's parents and mailed them new issues of Punk Planet?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

uhhh, no. Oh, forget it.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

scuse my lazy phrasing.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:24 (twenty-two years ago)

'Scuse me delib. misunderstanding stuff for comedy effect...

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah. Apparently you are to get lots of American-only extra items with each issue, e.g. tequila-soaked DVD of "Alfredo Garcia," life-sized barbed wire to entangle yourself with at the nearest crossroads, autographed copy of James Ellroy's Electric Chair Burger Cookbook, etc.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 29 April 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick, you know I did date a Brit once -- dumb as a fucking post, that girl. Empty-headed, vapid, and yes: I should have married her.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

The increase is probably precisly because yer boys went to Baghdad. Maybe if more attention had been paid to America's moribund economy the dollar wouldn't be at a four year low. Exchange rates matter in things like this.

tigerclawskank, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 08:18 (twenty-two years ago)

the weak dollar is actually helping corporations at the moment, when they repatriate foreign earnings they increase their earnings. also makes good costs more competitive which is good since the rest of the world is near depression, well other than canada which is rolling along pretty good.
