Mike Skinner (The Streets) in Nerve on the flatulent thank-you lists accompanying every album these days:

"When you get a carpenter to make you a closet, he doesn't walk out the house saying, 'I just want to thank my mum for raising me.'"

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 28 April 2003 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

why wait until the heartbeat stops/go on an' give the man his PROPS

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 28 April 2003 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Sasha Frere-Jones (Sasha Frere-Jones), Monday, 28 April 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i know thas right...and whats the deal with those lengthy film credits at the end (or even worse, BEFORE) the film? does anyone care who the Auxiliary Camera Supervisor was? no sar

stevem (blueski), Monday, 28 April 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

When you get a carpenter to make you a closet, he doesn't walk out the house saying, 'I just want to start a thread on ILM about it.'

hstencil, Monday, 28 April 2003 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

When you get the ghost of Karen Carpenter to make you an indie rap album, she doesn't download your unreleased rough mixes, does she?

Sasha Frere-Jones (Sasha Frere-Jones), Monday, 28 April 2003 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd like to see Skinner release an E.P. this year if not a whole new album - what're the chances?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 28 April 2003 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

When your plumber joins a post-rock band, he doesn't go onstage with a cape going, 'Do we have your permission to jam?'

hstencil, Monday, 28 April 2003 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

obviously you and I having been going to the same post-rock shows

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 28 April 2003 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

haven't, I mean, God damn it

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 28 April 2003 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

but blueski the credits are there because those people put in hours contributing materially to the thing you just saw (or worse, are about to see) - maybe thank yous appear there ("thanks to the Vancouver Chamber of Commerce") and I guess they'd fall in the range of Skinner's opproborium but shit dude, the tape op should get his name in!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, Stencil, did I drop a rock on your foot or something?

Sasha Frere-Jones (Sasha Frere-Jones), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

naw film credits and album credits are totally different, the acknowledgement section of the film is usually a three-second screen thanking the residents of whatever town got colonized by actor- and producer-types while the thing got shot, and a few cash sources

album credits, though, esp. rap credits (eighties metal set the standard here, though, it must be allowed): anybody who ever smiled at the guy writing the credits gets a "wassup!"

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

funny skinner does that. after all the shouts on pirates often sound like they've go a phone book open on the table in front of them...

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

why are any of you still talking about the streets?

They were horrible last year and they are still horrible now.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Naw Sasha, just making a funny.

hstencil, Tuesday, 29 April 2003 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Bummer. Because if you had, then I could have posted this:

FITE!

Though if the monkey had a cape, it would be better.

Sasha Frere-Jones (Sasha Frere-Jones), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha! you funny...

and seriously, the film and TV credits thing bugs me, at least at the start of films...i suppose its useful for setting the scene and easing you into the film tho.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

thing is SKinner has double-standards. on the track 'give me my lighter back' he thanks James Hyman for the X-Box...taking the piss or what?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

The reason they have credits detailing everything in films is so the people who actually put some damn effort into making the film get some recognition, rather than "This film was made solely by Kate Hudson and F Murray Abraham, with no help from anyone unglamourous"

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

As for Skinner releasing a new album, when I talked to him late last year he said the next album was already half finished.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

When you get a carpenter to make you a closet, he doesn't walk out the house saying, 'I just want to start a thread on ILM about it.'

Why would a carpenter want a thread on I Love Music? I Love Woodwork, maybe...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

when I talked to him late last year he said the next album was already half finished.

Let's keep it that way, huh?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Original Pirate Material sounded half-finished and that was what was so spellbindingly good about it...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

christ, i know WHY they have film credits for fucks sake...but really, who else cares? the need to back-slap and self-indulge outweighs the need for me to know who Wardrobe Assistant #17 was...and if i really care i'll go to a website now.

and can we please not get into a 'Skinner's great/Skinner's shit' thread again...the Streets haters on here just can't resist pointing out one more time how crap they think he is, like anyone gives a shit

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

you obv do.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I think film credits, the order and who gets creditied and so forth, have a lot to do w/ union regulations.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i want my name and credited on every website i've ever worked on...preferably it should open as a pop-up window and scroll up the screen before you actually access the website

and julio, i care because thats one road we dont need to go down again on this board - at least not til the next album is heard

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

when ppl post a thread titled x is god...how can you not expect that it goes down that road?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

fair point, but notice i haven't made a 'Skinner is grate' style statement, other than to express my wish for him to release new material this year or to complain about pointless snarky comments about how crap he is...it doesn't HAVE to go down that road but ILM being ILM i suppose its gonna

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

YES it has to do with union regulation and NEWS FLASH I think those particular union regulations are a good thing, otherwise "Candy" who actually made sure the cigarette was the right length on take #32 among 1,000,000,000,000,000 other things she was doing wouldn't be able to linger in the theater with her family and see her name up there. Nobody would do thankless shit like that otherwise. blueski I believe you would be free to leave the theater before that point. Agree wholeheartedly though with lameness of shout-outs to God and also agree with likening any sort of artistic production to carpentry, keeps em humble you know, but remember it's also a bit like sports, where every corn-husker has to big-up the Big Man upstairs and all manner of everything else too because let's face it, the luck involved with that level of acclaim is staggering, it's only natural that people should look outside themselves for the reasons why.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Tracer Hand hates Nebraska.

hstencil, Tuesday, 29 April 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Should I have said "every Hoya"?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

No cause then you'd have Hoya Paranoia.

hstencil, Tuesday, 29 April 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

why is it so many successful people belive in God anyway?

why is God never included in the film credits? (unless its Time Bandits, Star trek V etc.)

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

i) He grants favors to kiss-ups just like any other boss

ii) Hollywood is filled with heathen infidels

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, you know what bothers me MUCH, much more than shout-outs in liner notes? The trend (comparatively recent, if I'm not mistaken) of putting feedback from famous DJs into one-sheets and press releases. It goes like this: Joe Jazzbo and the Nujazz Fuxors send white labels to Gilles, Pete Tong, Rainer Truby, etc.; the jocks (or their interns) send back an awe-inspiring fax to the tune of "Wicked choon, m8! Sorted!" (translation: I don't care, but I have to say something so you'll keep sending me this shit, because what is a DJ's role in life if not to get free shit); the eager-beaver label dutifully reprints said blurbs in the one-sheets in hopes of having gullible reviewers wordwide say something about "Played out by everyone from Gilles Peterson to Rainer Truby!"

I suppose this isn't much different than the mutual back-patting that goes into book blurbs, but somehow the process seems so much more circular. Or maybe I'm just tired of seeing this particular crew of DJs cited as the be-all and end-all of tastemaking. In any case, it should end now.
