I'm getting rid of an assload of dub records right now. I'm ten pounds lighter and wide awake! Name your favorite, most recent, or most drastic music purge.

Sasha Frere-Jones (Sasha Frere-Jones), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

rock music, circa the year 2000.

i have spent the last three years picking it back up, randomly (and thankfully not at an inflated price.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

also, in 2000, i sold almost all of my vinyl (several thousand discs, all told) to finance my ill-fated move to nyc

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Pt. 2: Purges you regret (and ended up paying for).

Sasha Frere-Jones (Sasha Frere-Jones), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

an assload of dub records sounds like something you might regret!

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i've never purged willingly. it's always been sell for food or abandon on move. i left a hundred or so shitty mix tapes from high school to rot in a closet in winnipeg last december and it hurts to think about it.

brian badword (badwords), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

o, there's an assload of dub left.

Sasha Frere-Jones (Sasha Frere-Jones), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Purge? Don't know the meaning of the word.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i hate it when i've purged something and then someone here tells me thats a great record and i think: was it?

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

When I want a record I've sold back, it's usually been remastered and repackaged and whatnot during the time between. It all works out.

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 01:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I need to do this soon, because I need some extra cash and I have waaaay too many records. And even just today I stared at a big stack of cds and found reasons to keep them all. It's very hard to get started.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

SFJ if you do not halt this purge immediately and send me a list of what you're getting rid of I am going to start crying and I may never stop

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I sold all my Beatles LPs a while ago (incl. the White Album with the enclosed "collectors" pix. Oh, and Meet the Beatles.) for something like $13. ME AM COLOSSAL DIMWIT. Not like I'm a huge mark for the Beatles, but still.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 01:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I think in my short life I've purged maybe 500 albums from my collection. I'm that kind of girl.

Carey (Carey), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

it keeps rolling out but it keeps rolling in too

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

J0hn--was that rhetorical (the crying bit made me think mebbe) or real? If the latter, holler off-list and I'll tell you before it goes out the door.

Sasha Frere-Jones (Sasha Frere-Jones), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Out of the first 60 discs I ever bought, I kept about 15 - I write my CDs in a notebook when I get them and cross off the ones I get rid of. (lots of crossings out in the first few pages, guess which era in music those pages cover from these selections: Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Offspring, Green Day, Nirvana, Alice In Chains). I only get rid of stuff if the disc's presence bothers me with its presence... erm, it's a gut instinct thing. The only one I've regretted is the Blue Aeroplanes' Life Model, when I taped the few songs I liked from it and now I can't hear them because the tape is screwed up. I don't really care enough to buy it over again, so what the heck.

Poppy (poppy), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 03:46 (twenty-two years ago)

never mind that excessive "presence" up there, my editing's gone to shit since I dropped out of English and sold my Fall B-sides comp. I thought "oh, I'm just gonna get those songs when I buy all the albums anyway!" have I hell.

Poppy (poppy), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Poppy, the notebook thing is the best idea ILM has ever seen.

Leee (Leee), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 04:54 (twenty-two years ago)

My last purge was in about 1986 when I got rid of some of my more embarrassing records at the time (Thompson Twins, Nik Kershaw etc) but still ended up throwing out some baby with the bath water. So I've not done it since. I don't think I've sold a single record in that time.

James Ball (James Ball), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

going on an overseas trip 1984 - gave away everything in my collection of 300 lps and 100 singles bar 25 (don't ask me why i kept these particular ones - no idea) - didn't buy anything at all till 1995 and have since purchased them all over again

phil turnbull (philT), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 05:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I usually don't purge by genre. I just dig around, pull out a random disc and ask m'self when the last time I played it was, and do I realllly need it just for that one or those two favorite songs.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

My music collection purges go in cycles. I purged out a couple of hundred cds a couple of months back taking my collection down to around 1200. I've pulled out around 250 or so more in the past few days. The sudden realization is that I really don't need this many cds. The music is of many different styles, but a big chunk is electronic music that I went off the deep end checking out since the mid 90s.

earlnash, Tuesday, 29 April 2003 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

After years of writing about music for a living and doing non-commercial radio, I became a civilian almost two years ago now. And since I just moved as well, I took the opportunity to undertake maybe my third or fourth major lifetime music purge. It's funny what you come across when you try looking at your collection in the cold, hard light of utility.

I mean, I'm 38 years old, happily married, and have a kid; given that, I found myself wondering, why do I need the entire Sebadoh catalog on CD? I rarely enjoyed listening to a whole 'Doh disc anyway--I mostly skipped around to the "good" tracks. And although the good tracks are still good, I'm not likely to need to listen to lots of sad songs about whacking off and beautiful gurls, oh, the rest of life, probably. Hopefully.

So anyway, I got rid of a lot of stuff that just didn't impress me as much as it once did, or that just doesn't mean anything to me anymore. Also, now that I'm pretty sure that I'm not going to need every single New Bomb Turks record for research purposes, or that John Peel's not going to get sick and call me to fill in, there's no reason to keep around anything except those recordings to which I enjoy listening to over and over, or the occasional disc that's just too much of a curio to let go (the Conet Project, that pachinko-parlor disc, etc.).

I've always kept the collection pretty tight, though--I've probably kept maybe a fifth or sixth or less of all the records and discs I've bought or traded for to date. But I must admit sometimes regretting it. I think I've bought and purged the first Slint album three times now.

Of course, I spent almost all the proceeds of the recent purge on more music . . .

Lee G (Lee G), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I got rid of a huge amount of hardcore and jungle a couple of 2000 years ago, simply because i needed the space and was moving and very poor... regret some of it now, but will survive and need to do another pretty soon... have about 4,000 vinyl records of various sizes and roughly 2,000 CDS

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

that was back in 2000/2001 - not 2000 years ago... duh!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i never get rid of anything
to the point where i still have a longpigs album
my sister seem to have taken some of my cds that i dont like anymore as her own though

robin (robin), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually THREW OUT a couple of Whitehouse albums (or was one by MB? Yes, I think it was). This was years ago, I bought them for next to nothing and now I find out they're worth a small fortune. I thought they sucked so bad I just put in the dustbin - what a fool.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

oh MAN

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I put out a bunch of rare-ish 2001-2002 electro on the front stoop a few months back because I thought it was crap.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

four years pass...

I've done this recently. It made me feel lighter and ready for new stuff!

three handclaps, Friday, 9 November 2007 23:57 (eighteen years ago)

Also: I do not regret it one bit.
