Hot Hot Heat - Finally a good "new rock" band, it seems

Finally it seems "new rock" has left its punk stage and entered its new wave stage. Listening to Hot Hot Heat's "Bandages" now, which is actually an excellent single, bit like a cross-in-between Wire, The Jam and 70s XTC.

Before, The Vines have been doing some of the same stuff, and hopefully it is Vines and Hot Hot Heat rather than The Strokes and White Stripes that will define the following years' rock music.

Hot Hot Heat actually sound like a cross between the Wannadies and Supergrass, although Bandages is growing on me through its sheer ubiquity.

I quite like the Hot Hot Heat, but as a live act, they were completely inconsequential. Granted, I was drunk off my ass and behaving like more a deplorably boorish sonofabitch than usual, but whatever. I quite like the oft-cited "New Wavesque" quality of their music (all quirked-out angles and high-piped, squealy vocals, citations of Joe Jackson, the Cure, XTC, etc.) but I'm not convinced they're going to set the world on fire.

I'm not sure I entirely understand pitting Hot Hot Heat and The Vines against The Strokes and The White Stripes. Granted, I've not heard The Vines (I don't think) -- but it seems like HHH has more in common with The Strokes than The White Stripes do. After all, both are fundamentally pop bands. Maybe what I'm saying is, I understand why Geir doesn't like the Stripes (neither do I), but I don't get why he doesn't like the Strokes.

I understand why Geir doesn't like the Stripes (neither do I)

At some point I'm going to figure out why I really really don't like the White Stripes now. It will have nothing to do with how melodic they are or aren't, but will probably have a lot to do with the fact that putting a lot of different things in one place does not in fact automatically equate to a perfect synthesis every time -- for all the wish fulfillment to the contrary.

I've concluded Hot Hot Heat are really shit after hearing their album. I concluded The Vines were shit after seeing them live (though the new single is good?). The White Stripes shit all over both from a very very high height and only a numpty like Geir would think otherwise.

Hot Hot Heat seems to know a thing or two about songs, which is what counts. White Stripes couldn't care less about songs, and only make noise. That just doesn't make sense. Rock now needs to get completely rid of its blues roots. And I mean all of them!

Geir, I think some of your theories are interesting in a taking sides kind of way, but saying that the White Stripes don't have songs makes no sense. I mean they obviously do, even if some of them are noisy. How exactly does one of their less noisy outings like "We Are Going to Be Friends" violate your rules of music?

I'm sorry, but I can't let this slip by. Apologies if i sound obnoxious but just what the fuck good is music that is merely "good enough"?

There are plenty of generic indie bands out there now that can write songs that are actually GOOD. I mean, if good songs are all that matters, there's a plethora modern indie bands that fit the bill better than Hot Hot Heat.
