as evidenced here:

indie rock! (wtf)
-- jess (dubplatestyl...)

-------------------------------

seriously though, every good or great album i've heard this year so far has been in "indie" or certainly "rock". someone needs to fix this.)
-- jess (dubplatestyl...)

-------------------------------

jess, do you just want recommendations in any area, or would you more interested right now in hearing. e.g. jazz, dance, afropop, chinese opera...?
-- H (harefeain...)

really i just meant that bands/artists need to remedy this situation (but i figure that if/when the dizzee rascal, outkast, and luomo records drop, this will change.) HOWEVER, have at it.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

non-indie/rock records i've heard in 2003 and like/love:

freaks - the man who lived underground
m mayer - peel session
wasteland - amen fire
the dj scud anthology

for "records" read: "albums." i have heard plenty good singles so far.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

stuff i heard and disliked or was ambivalent about:

the new massive attack
the majesticons record

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

also, i have enough scud-style splatterbreaks/gabba/noise records to last me the rest of my life.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Barbara Morgenstern - Nichts Muss

I dunno if you'd call that indie though.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

field mob -- from the roota to tha toota (this was late 2002, but can i mention it anyway?)
killer mike -- monster (it goes much deeper than "A.D.I.D.A.S." & "akshun")
jessica andrews -- now (a great commercial country album that could've been the next great mariah carey record)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

This is kinda bullshit because some of em are mix tapes but...

Freeway- Philadelphia Freeway
Lloyd Banks- Best of Lloyd Banks Vol.1 (he's better then 50 and he's not in jail)
Jay-Z- The S. Carter Collection (basically a 50 Cent/Diplomats-style teaser for the Black Album, full of freestyles that would be lead singles for most)
Quantic Soul Orchestra- Stampede
Kanye West- Behind the Beats (all instrumentals, with interview snippets)
Lemme think some more...

Chris Ryan (chrisryan), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Autechre...

(just bought it myself, haven't listened yet.)

hstencil, Tuesday, 29 April 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The Knife Deep Cuts

You can hear the single "Heartbeats" right here.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I should add that The Knife album isn't exactly consistent, but when it works, it's fantastic. It's sort of like pre-Matthew Barney Bjork with questionable taste in keyboard sounds.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

the new Opeth record

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Sogar - apikal_blend (12k)-- in the vein of Fennesz if you're in that mood. My favorite of 2003 so far.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

If you don't like Junior Senior I don't know what to tell you!!

Adam A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I really like what I've heard of Coloma (i'm listening to it now). I'm surprised the term "indie guilt" has not come up in this thread.

Adam A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

NNCK is not indie (it isn't OK!) so go for that.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i have a nnck album and it doesnt mean much to me

ditto coloma

junior senior are pants

autechre record didn't do anything for me on the first couple plays

i am def interested in field mob and killer mike

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

''i have a nnck album and it doesnt mean much to me''

OK it depends which one. the revenant one is really good. I got a live double CD and that's nice. some nice psych grooves.

junior senior is a joke.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i bought field mob cuz chuck wouldn't stop raving about it. the lyrix are kinda shit, but the beats and heavy drawls are great. killer mike = outkast without the parliament fixation (i.e. what big boi's half of the new album will sound like, i betcha).

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i really like a lot of the junior senior which shocks the living shit oughtta me

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

You could also go to Slsk or whatever and grab Focus, Pump It Up, Drop, and Breathe by Joe Budden. As well as his Sing For The Moment, In Da Club, and Grindin' freestlyes and his lil' Jay-Z diss (over the Pump It Up beat again). Then you'd have the best rap record of the year. I think there's a Best of mixtape out there. He's the future.

Chris Ryan (chrisryan), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

do they have to be albums?

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Freeway Philadelphia Freeway (roc-a-fella), (Sic) (Broklyn Beats), Cherrystone’s Rocks (Lo) Music In My Head Volume 2 (Stern’s), The Best of King Sunny Ade (Shanachie), Watch How The People Dancing (Honest Jon’s) Cafe Tacuba Cuatro Caminos (MCA), Barbara Morgenstern Nicht Muss, Postal Service, Fannypack bla bla bla.

The Andree 3000 shit on K Mike is hott--"A.D.I.D.A.S." is one of the year's best, early take, and "Akshon" is great--but the rest is feh.

Sasha Frere-Jones (Sasha Frere-Jones), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

How can you deny "All 4 U," Sasha?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

And then you praise the Postal Service?!? I'm dumbfounded!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

based on a few mp3s,it sounds like the matthew herbert big band album is going to be well worth hearing
i think its out in a week or two

robin (robin), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

If you can't express love for "Big N Bashy" by Fallacy...

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Ethiopiques vol. 14--the Getatchew Mekurya disc--is gorgeous and freaky-weird. Tense, loopy quasi-pentatonic saxophone groove. I've been playing it A LOT.

Douglas (Douglas), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Getachew is an amazing musician and a really sweet guy. I would second that recomendation wholeheartedly.

H (Heruy), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

(I love that album, glad to see someone on here has picked up on it)

H (Heruy), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

these are all good ideas and i will do my best to track some of them down.

is it just me or has it been a rather dry year for hip-hop so far?

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Ellen Allien, the Areal comp, Goldfrapp, Nurse w/ Wound, Shiina Ringo, Bangkok Impact

Honda (Honda), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

it has been dry. 50 cent of course and Freeway, Lil Kim, Foxy Brown, Fabolous, Killer Mike, but i havent been quite taken by any of these yet if we're talking albums. undie-wise is worse although Mad Villain and Jaylib could be promising. the new Push Button Objects record is probably the best offering so far to the Jux/Anticon=experimental=good crowd but i've grown somewhat impartial.

Honda (Honda), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i do wanna hear the nww...the sinking of the titanic connections intrigue me

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

"is it just me or has it been a rather dry year for hip-hop so far?"

I don't know. Freeway, most of Killer Mike. The Monster Isalnd Czars, Brother Ali and the Extended Famm records are all good. It could be a good second half of the year if half of the stuff promised actually comes out (Joe Budden, Ghost, Raekwon, Jay, Outkast, M.O.P., Kanye West, Cann Ox, Soul Position, etc.). Still two or three CDs worth of good singles though.

Chris Ryan (chrisryan), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Jess, did you ever listen to that radio1 show I mentioned?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

was that the bhangra show? i dont have any speakers for this computer and my headphones cord isnt long enough, so i have to sit with my face pressed directly against the monitor. oh, the humanity, etc.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that Freeway album any good? I got a free copy of it over a month ago, I still haven't plucked up the courage to listen to it, usually I'd rather stick forks in my eye than listen to anything associated with Jay-Z.

On another hip-hop stance, I've absolutely loved DJ Format's "Music for the Mature B-Boy", but we are suggesting for Jess here...

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Audio Bullys' Ego War?

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Jess, I'm sharing two Bobby Friction and Nihal shows on soulseek. I'm in the ILM room.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

hey Jess, what indie/rock records of 2003 do I need to hear?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I really like the Freeway album - most of the production is Just Blaze, and I can't seem to get enough of his stuff right now; also his voice holds up surprisingly well over an album. Then again, depending on what you don't like about Jay-z, Dom, it might be hopeless.

dave k, Tuesday, 29 April 2003 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

On the non-hiphop side I gotta mention Asa-Chang and Junray, the Soft Pink Truth, the Numbers remixes, Lory D on Rephlex, and the DFA mix for Colette. Nice but inessential: the new Jan Jelinek and Mira Calix albums. I imagine the Crydamoure 2 compilation and Bangkok Impact are going to be out of control good.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, Junior Senior has made some great stuff. The video aside (which was good in it's own right), they've made some good tunes.

David Allen, Tuesday, 29 April 2003 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, that Panjabi MC "Beware Of The Boys" is Top 10 come Dec 31, easy.

Yiznancey: "All 4 U" is good, though I haven't spent time with it (damn iTunes shuffle favors the other tracks), and, yar, Postal Service is a record you could make up in your sleep, but his voice over that Gap music, I don't know--it makes me feel like I'm on a plane getting the fuck out of here. and that's a good feeling.

Jessica Andrews--I'm with you. And I LOVE the Field Mob lyrics. Some of this RJD2 EP is pretty fucking hot. Curse curse curse. Oh, and big vertical to Goldfrapp--that is a movie someone should make, whatever the hell is going on in that record.

I love Paolo Conte, but that is because I am old.

Sasha Frere-Jones (Sasha Frere-Jones), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Yancey, what's wrong with Field Mob*'s words??? They're great!

If nobody noticed, I just listed lots of CDs I like on another thread.

* I count Field Mob as 2002, when I voted for it, though.

chuck, Tuesday, 29 April 2003 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

anthony you need to hear:

ted leo (probably my fave alb of the year so far, damn it)
white stripes (i'm 2/3 sold, at least)
lightning bolt (yaaaaaarrrr!!)
yeah yeah yeahs (i'm sold on 1/2 of it)

some i'm forgetting

(my god, i'm so "spin")

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah, the blood brothers record...ummm...i havent actually heard that many new albums this year

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

And Bonnie Prince Billy! Bonnie Prince Billy, White Stripes and Lightning Bolt are the holy triumvirate of sweet ass indie rock 2003

Adam A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I want dirty ass rock and roll, though. Are LB and the Stripes sweet? Scary!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Sweet ass as in dope as fuck, silly

Adam A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 00:56 (twenty-two years ago)

LB has always stood for "Loose Booty" to me.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

is it just me or has it been a rather dry year for hip-hop so far?

I think so, so far. I keep waiting for some new hip hop track/album to come and knock me out, but not yet. I haven't been particularly impressed with any hip hop since around November. Since so much of the best hip hop seems to focus on the summer/fall quarters, I'm hoping that the best stuff is waiting to be released then

It's been a stellar year for the indie rock, though.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

true

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Cave-In?

Well. i should hear it anyways.

Andrzej B. (Andrzej B.), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 02:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I was with you on the Field Mob lyrics for a while, but about half of the album kinda turns me off, lyrically. Maybe I wanted something even more Dixie-fried? I meant to bring the album in with me today, but I forgot to. I'll go into detail later.

The Freeway record is good, and I really like parts of the Diplomats album.

Postal Service just bored me to tears. I only liked the song that sounded like Jimmy Eat World and I only liked it cuz it sounded like Jimmy Eat World...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

my headphones cord isnt long enough, so i have to sit with my face pressed directly against the monitor

May I recommend a headphone extension cord from Radio Shack.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd suggest some stuff but you hate like ALL of my favorite music jess so nevermind.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Indie/ Rock:

Him - Love Metal
Linkin Park - Meteora
Cardle of Filth - Damnation and a Day
Styrofoam - I'm what's there to show that something's missing
Ataris - So Long, Astoria

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd suggest some stuff but you hate like ALL of my favorite music jess so nevermind.
-- nickalicious (nza2342...), April 30th, 2003.

Not quite true; I picked up Cure For Pain and Yes by Morphine after reading one of your posts, Mr Licious, and I love 'em both. So thank you!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

May I recommend a headphone extension cord from Radio Shack.

god bless you.

actually i have no money right now, but that's going on the list with "new pillow cases" and "shelves"

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

um, borbetomagus are releasing a new record apparently.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

The new Donna Summer is also quite good. I guess it's indie, but it's not rock.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

A second vote for Ellen Allien and recommendation for Bangkok Impact "Traveller" from me.

Nathan W (Nathan Webb), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

B/C I haven't seen it mentioned here - and I love it - I'm going to recommend A Grape Dope, "Missing Dragons." It's J. Herndon from Tortoise doing his solo thing. There've been singles but because I detest vinyl I've avoided them. Otherwise, Lightning Bolt, Palaxy Tracks, New Porn, Jicks, M-phones, Jeff Hanson, Yoshimi & Yuka are great.

Sorry - as much as I listen I can't make myself like "Philadelphia Freeway." Production's tight all the way through, but there's too many guest stars and most of them ain't bringin' anything special to the table and I dunno...Free's only really blowing my mind on 5-6 songs (and half of those are the singles) the rest of the time I just want to push forward. "Blueprint 2" was two discs and 45% filler and yet still better than "PF."

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

whoops. just named some indie bands....ignore that part of my post.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris, could ya either post or e-mail the tracklist for the "s. carter collection" mixtape? i tried looking on the net, but found nothing conclusive.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow I posted to this two days ago and now my message is gone! Gone!

Anyway Jess I don't know if you count it as '02 but the Sean Paul album is amazing and I *know* you'd love it if you don't already. And the new Coloma album is so much better than the first one that I can no longer listen to the first one anymore.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 1 May 2003 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Raymond - is that Grape Dope thing actually out? Tried soulseeking it, to no avail.

Nathan W (Nathan Webb), Thursday, 1 May 2003 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

S. Carter Collection = http://www.mixtapekings.com/hiphop/djs/roc-a-fella-the_s_carter_collection.asp

i should be getting it in the mail soon, i'll prolly start a thread if i have anything to say when i hear it. i admit i'm not expecting much, though; i've heard a few of the freestyles and they were eh, and it doesn't have a lot of his recent tracks that i was hoping it would (Stop, Excuse Me Miss Again, I Miss You remix, Get My Shit Off, Hovi Baby remix, etc.)

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 1 May 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks al!

i've been telling jess to download sean paul's "like glue" for months now but i don't think he's done it.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Friday, 2 May 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Jay'z "If I Can't Do It" freestyle is fucking fresh.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 2 May 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
this is not an album, and it's ancient - St. Etienne/Andrew Weatherall "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" (but would u say Neil Young was indie??)
Try also Jan Garbarek "Officium" to chill out to (defo not indie)

Mizzy the Stowaway, Wednesday, 11 June 2003 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I highly recommend the Br0klyn Beats [sic] series compilition.

I'm pretty happy with the new Push Button Objects record, "Ghetto Blaster."

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 12 June 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

non-indie rock stuff that has impressed. king of woolworths new one .. spy drama meets french pop music. unklesounds mix triple cd .. the best cut-n-paste mix in quite a while. get it now before the bods realise there's some heavy licencing avoidance going on. ta.

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 12 June 2003 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

The new Monica single...obsessive goth stalker horror classick!

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 12 June 2003 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

borbetomagus- songs our mother taught is a nice blast.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 12 June 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been telling you mofos: Hans-Eckardt Wenzel's "Ticky Tock" is the record of the year.

http://www.woodyguthrie.org/woodyguthrie/shop/en-us/dept_23.html

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 12 June 2003 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

The new Monica single...obsessive goth stalker horror classick!

If you are lying to me about this I will never speak to you again.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 June 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

The only really horrible hip hop album i've heard so far this year is Freeway which is a surprise because I didn't like his cameo on the last Jay Z album at all. It's all about the Blaze. Joe Budden is alright but I fail to see any glimpse of the "future" in him. Um, the S Carter mix tape is really patchy, def worth it for his 'Pump It Up' and 'If I Can't Do It' freestyles. Hmm.. hip hop has been pretty shitty this year... Stagga Lee (ha)?

ss, Thursday, 12 June 2003 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh and the R Kelly record of course is very good

ss, Thursday, 12 June 2003 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, I swear to you it is very creepy and scary in a good way.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 12 June 2003 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The new four tet is lovely.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 12 June 2003 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Rah. :-) Well, if it can be shared via The Usual Methods, please do (unless arrangements were already made).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 June 2003 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

if you think the freeway album is terrible then there is no hope for you

i have heard many non-indie rock records now

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 12 June 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

hear more of them dammit!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 12 June 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually Jess from the context of the message I think ss means "horrible" in a positive sense.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 13 June 2003 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)
