M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 06:52 (twenty-three years ago)

thanks for tip, off to soulseek...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 06:56 (twenty-three years ago)

i got that tessio 12" the other day. Aside from having a lovely picture one the cover, it has 2 remixes. The Aukfan (sp?) one is probably the one on the album, the one that people have been raving about, but i actually prefer the other one, by i can't remember who... Its sort of cut up and dubby. sorry, that's all a bit vague, but i bought the thing a week ago but have only had a couple of chances to listen to it ;-(

Robin Goad (rgoad), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 07:35 (twenty-three years ago)

no, the one on the album is the A-side, it's different from the version on the first Luomo album. the cut-up, dubby one is probably the Akufen, that's his style. I have the 12" too, just haven't played it yet, and the cover photo is the hottest thing ever

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 07:47 (twenty-three years ago)

when is this coming out??

dave k, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 07:58 (twenty-three years ago)

fall, probably. I was sworn not to review it till a date was given. OK, I won't.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 08:02 (twenty-three years ago)

(it is great)

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 08:10 (twenty-three years ago)

It's too bad it doesn't have Melt on it, but boy am I excited now

dave k, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 08:49 (twenty-three years ago)

"Melt" wouldn't fit--it's really fucking poppy, and the vocals are NOT SHY this time around, they're right up front...I could go on and on and on but I fear sleep beckons.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 08:54 (twenty-three years ago)

no, let me say this: "So You" is his most voracious desire-matrix yet, the vocals ("Do I want too much? Oh, I'd give to you...I ain't got anything else I could give to you") every bit as desperate/desireful as on Vocalcity but they're up front, not shy in a way that the last album wasn't; the way they work off these foursquare, almost plodding keyboard and basslines just ratchets up their neediness, like impossible desires secretly erupting in the head of a person who looks like they're just shopping for toothpaste or something, only the beat is really funky...I've played it like 20 times tonight; it's probably the greatest thing he's ever done.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 09:00 (twenty-three years ago)

you bastard matos :)

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 10:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Is it on forcetracks?

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 10:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Release date is June 9 (same as new Radiohead, Beyoncé, Sizzla, Metallica and Mary J Blige)...

JoB (JoB), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 12:08 (twenty-three years ago)

The 12" is Force Tracks FT 54.

JoB (JoB), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 12:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought it would be worth mentioning Luomo's rmx of Massive Attack's "Special Cases" in this thread. It's amazing, but compared to the comments made upthread about the vocals, this remix is more old school Luomo. Well worth checking if you haven't already...

disco stu (disco stu), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 15:35 (twenty-three years ago)

either mix of tessio will have to some to beat the MRI version

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 16:07 (twenty-three years ago)

The MRI version is easily my favorite of the remixes.

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 16:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm into the Matthias Schaffhauser mix pretty big, too, but MRI is grate. I do wish I had a turntable to play this stuff on....

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 17:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a really nice one to sell... ;o)

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 17:57 (twenty-three years ago)

JoB, where did you get that 6.9 release date info? I was told that it's not out till Sept. or Oct. by the company's pub. guy.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I do wish I had a turntable to play this stuff on....

Frubba!? Nooga?! Hee-Hay? Teedle-nee-pa-pa?

david day (winslow), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:01 (twenty-three years ago)

wtf?

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:03 (twenty-three years ago)

heh. sorry. a bout of disbelief... 'sokay, though. get thee to a stereo shop!

Present Lover is coming out on like BMG or sumting, yes? I believe Tos is correct, in the fall.

david day (winslow), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:26 (twenty-three years ago)

why is it that people are always surprised that I don't have a turntable? those fuckers (the good ones, at least) are k-expensive! I'd rather spend it on more CDs.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:32 (twenty-three years ago)

What I'm surprised at Matos is that you're holding out for a good turntable. You don't strike me as the audiophile type. Get some plastic thing for $100 and then you can start collecting Casablanca 12-inches.

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

It's coming out June 1 in Germany (and presumably rest of Europe?) through BMG; U.S. release will be later as per some licensing holdups, "hopefully by end of the year" being the word I got.

And it's gooooooood.

Andy, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:40 (twenty-three years ago)

grrrr... i want. i turn on file-swapping program home tonight. i listen. i buy later.

david day (winslow), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:49 (twenty-three years ago)

it doesn't seem to be anywhere on slsk at the moment

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:50 (twenty-three years ago)

where did you get that 6.9 release date info?

Benelux distributor.

JoB (JoB), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:56 (twenty-three years ago)

it doesn't seem to be anywhere on slsk at the moment

grrrr...

david day (winslow), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 20:07 (twenty-three years ago)

It's coming out June 1 in Germany

heheh, that's "Old Europe" for ya. :) One month to go, I can live with that.

Omar (Omar), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 20:11 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe the Yanks get it in Autumn, Europeans in June?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 20:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Except, being Yanks and all, we get it in Fall rather than Autumn!

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 21:11 (twenty-three years ago)

AAAAAAAHHH!

... is all I can think or say right now.

Also why I have i not heard this MRI remix of "tessio" before?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 1 May 2003 00:29 (twenty-three years ago)

surprised you haven't, Tim--it's quel excellente.

btw, the bridge (that's right, bridge) on "What Good" is the most heart-stoppingly ecstatic moment of his career so far.

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 1 May 2003 09:04 (twenty-three years ago)

The MRI mix of Tessio is just pure Tantrically slow-building dancefloor bliss. Actually reminds me of dancing in the open air at the forcetracks showcase at Sonar a couple of years ago and falling momentarily in love with one of the heartstoppingly beautiful Catalans beside me, plucking up the courage to talk to her and turning round to find her gone, but not really caring because we'd smiled at each other and everything else about the evening was just perfect (unembellished true story!)... kinda fitted with the song...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 1 May 2003 10:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Where do I start?

The Massive Attack remix is astonishing, what you would expect from a Luomo remix at first which, naturally, is great, and then it goes on a microrave tip, complete with a couple of outstanding Orbital-style moments. I don't have the words to explain it but some of you do, so please seek it out.

Has anyone else got "Waltz For Your Eyes", the limited 12" on scheinselbständig (sst 5)? Tricky to find but it looks like it's still available at Juno Records. It's not the best thing he's done to be honest, but it has a nice acoustic guitar feel, half r'n'b and half Balearic, and a nice lyric - "Can't look at their eyes anymore, it's you I wanna be living for" - reputedly meant for his loved one. Perhaps the old goat has settled down and doesn't need to elliptically orbit his lyrical purpose any more.

Is the Euro-American release date disparity a pan-Atlantic date formatting confusion? 6/9 means the 6th of September in these parts.

And Matos, do you need any favours doing? Lawns watering? Windows cleaning? Ovens degreasing? Give us a shout, I'm sure I'll think of something you could do for me.

Mike (mratford), Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Just got the "Tessio" remix pack few days ago, and I'm disappointed - I prefer remixes when they completely rip apart the original and turn it into something altogether new, and all of these (Akufen, M.R.I., Moonbootica, Hakan Libdo, Ric Y Martin) leave "Tessio" more or less intact. The Akufen one is nice, surprisingly disciplined and balearic, but not particularly exciting. My fave is the Moonbootica one, nice electro bassline. Went to see Savas Pascalidis play last weekend, and he opened his set with it - lovely. The M.R.I. one didn't leave an impression on first cursory listen, but will get back to it what with the recommendations above.

Oh, and I watched Vladislav Delay live few weeks ago. I can't listen to IDM glitch at all any more, and I went just because I was hoping he'd throw in some forthcoming Luomo material in the mix for surprise - all I got was an acapella at the end. The Delay stuff I just can't enjoy and appreciate, but the guy himself was reeeeally into it, swaying in trance and punching the air with every eardrum-rupturing glitch. He also dropped in Tricky's "Christiansands" and "Makes Me Wanna Die" for no apparent reason in the midst of his act (I 've heard that apparently, his three fave albums ever are "Maxinquaye", "Protection" and "No Protection"). And he started off with the intro from the Tweet album! Love the guy.

Also, he's super HOTT!!! Why he chose those old baldhead shots for promo pics mystifies me. He's let some hair down in the meantime, and now looks like the most shaggable, beautifulest scandinavian lovegod ever!

Mind Taker, Friday, 2 May 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

hasn't been anywhere on slsk yet. i will offer $ money to anyone who uploads it, anywhere.

Ess Kay (esskay), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 05:26 (twenty-two years ago)

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 05:30 (twenty-two years ago)

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 06:03 (twenty-two years ago)

(if you can tell the difference you're lying, especially if you're encoding it to MP3)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 06:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I also can't (a) convert audio to MP3 or (b) upload MP3s onto my hard drive. It's very old and not very good. I play most of my CDs on a shitty little boom box.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 06:19 (twenty-two years ago)

spray painted leapord print? carry it on your shoulder?

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 08:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I like it more than the first album. It's more poppy. Very summer. Actually it reminds me of Everything But the Girl a bit. Maybe Luomo can cross over to the yuppie house market ;) Present Lover is still the best imho.

Ben Williams, Wednesday, 7 May 2003 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree with Ben- 'Present Lover' is probably, by my ears, the most perfect thing I've heard in the past year or so. The one moment in the song that crystallizes everything for me occurs after that solo, when the singer sort of breathe-sings 'I wish', then it goes back to 'the true lover', and then this noise like the revving of an engine while everything else drops out. It makes my knees buckle even when I'm sitting down.

Kevin H (Kevin H), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i just don't get why everyone raves over luomo. it's the dullest pop house i have ever heard just as vladislav delay is the dullest dub techno i've ever heard. the most overrated finn of all time?

stirmonster, Wednesday, 7 May 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Vladislav Delay is "dub techno"?!

brimstead, Friday, 8 November 2013 04:38 (twelve years ago)

Herbert was pretty good around the time people still talked about microhouse, it's only since about 2004 that he's become really insufferable.

I have never been able to get into Farben's Textstar despite multiple attempts but I love Luomo.

Matt DC, Friday, 8 November 2013 12:30 (twelve years ago)

Never got into Farben nor even Vocalcity but Perfect Lover is such a classic

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 8 November 2013 15:17 (twelve years ago)

farben is cool but that is from the perspective of approaching him via mille plateaux etc, i can see why it would be a bit dry for someone entering that world from mnml techno or the rest of ~microhouse~ or whatever

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Friday, 8 November 2013 15:23 (twelve years ago)

i remember vocalcity and textstar being talked about together but temperamentally or in sound design terms they are little alike

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Friday, 8 November 2013 15:24 (twelve years ago)

The thing people never talk about with Luomo is how full and satisfying his basslines are, not like in an oafish UK bass kind of way, but they're really sumptuous and glue the other elements of the track together so well, you could ride them for hours.

Matt DC, Friday, 8 November 2013 15:28 (twelve years ago)

that is because they are so satisfied they don't have time to talk about basslines

j., Friday, 8 November 2013 16:15 (twelve years ago)

xp Matt that's exactly what initially drew me to him. How does one make synth basses do those sort of things?

nathom, Sunday, 27 January 2019 09:58 (seven years ago)

It's no Vocalcity. Both of them pale next to Karhunainen, however.

pomenitul, Sunday, 27 January 2019 10:54 (seven years ago)

I guess we don’t look for the same thing in Luomo but this is just no contest for me. Present Lover is super classic, the rest is far behind.

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Sunday, 27 January 2019 19:18 (seven years ago)

Karhunainen is great but lol at the idea that it holds a candle to either of the first two luomo albums.

The next Luomo album, 2003's The Present Lover, was a major label misadventure

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Sunday, 16 March 2025 19:33 (one year ago)

Yeah same, thanks for reminding me how long it's been. I love this album but seem to have memory-holed it for half a decade or so, which is weird cos a lot of my listening is obsessively reviving the stuff I loved from around this time.

LocalGarda, Sunday, 16 March 2025 19:37 (one year ago)

One of the greatest albums ever.

Allen (etaeoe), Sunday, 16 March 2025 20:19 (one year ago)

It's held up so well, the production is outrageous.

LocalGarda, Sunday, 16 March 2025 20:32 (one year ago)

I don't think anything really sounds like Vocalcity. The closest Luomo project is Paper Tigers from 2006, which I need to revisit.

The Vladislav Delay bandcamp page has a subscription that I've opted back into after a break, and it looks like Sasu's been posting a lot of stems, outtakes from old projects, previews of upcoming work, and genre experiments, but there's either just not that much Luomo material on the shelf or he's kind of done with it for now.

All kinds of great stuff, though! And he's pretty active in responding to comments and questions.

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Monday, 17 March 2025 14:21 (one year ago)

This sounds great. I think I will subscribe. My only hesitation in doing so is the same as it is for any other artist or writer I like on Bandcamp, Substack or Patreon: I know that, at some point, I will have to cancel. Ironically, it is this preemptive guilt that has prevented me from supporting more folks, but there's only so much discretionary spending to go around!

mh, any highlights you would recommend? There's a lot here! I'm less interested in the officially released material, as I have a lot of that already, and I don't really have a use for the stems, though those may be interesting to hear at least once from the perspective of trying to reverse engineer Sasu's process. My favorite of his projects, aside from Luomo and VD, is stuff like Uusitalo and Conoco, if that helps.

Paul Ponzi, Monday, 17 March 2025 16:51 (one year ago)

I could probably write up some notes. I started digging through the backlog over the weekend and there are a handful of standouts and a lot of experiments, some more interesting than others. I'm intrigued by the ones tagged "vd5" that I assume are from an upcoming Vladislav Delay Quintet album

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Monday, 17 March 2025 17:11 (one year ago)

I don't think anything really sounds like Vocalcity. The closest Luomo project is Paper Tigers from 2006, which I need to revisit.

For whatever reason had never listened to Paper Tigers, but there's a permanent shrine to Vocalcity in my soul so checking it out now.
