C/D - Thelonious Monster

Spawned in the same scene as Jane's Addiction and the Chili Peppers, Hollywood's answer to the Replacements self-destructed while their peers became superstars. They were critical darlings that never sold records. What do you all think of them?
I found a website that has mp3s of their unreleased reunion album available for free.

I'm only familiar with "Walk on Water" which was a great tune... Too bad the Royal Crescent Mob already had a lock on white guys imitating James Brown.

After listening to the mp3's... While I'm not so excited that I want to track down all the Thelonious Monster recordings in existence, I am reminded how unjust/unwarranted the RHCP's success was- compared to all of the other late-80s acts.

i never thought of them as in the same terrain as them red hot silly chappies. Mind you, most of what i remember of Thelonious Monster (besides one great live show) was "Sammy Hagar Weekend", which made me laugh, at the time.

Never could stand Bob Forrest's voice.

I have Beautiful Mess on tape somewhere. Can't remember whether it's any good. I only bought it for the Tom Waits cameo.

I have Beautiful Mess, haven't listened to it in a while. I remember there's a really good Joan Armatrading cover on there.

Thelonius Monster was pretty fun the time I saw them back in the early 90s. Bob did a version of "Here Comes a Regular" by the Replacement solo to close the show. Mary's Danish was even better out of those same LA alt funk groups that got signed but never caught on big.

The 90s alt/funk band I saw a few times that was really fun to see live was the Royal Crescent Mob. Those guys were tons of fun live and I saw them play a few times during the same time period.
