What's the verdict on this one?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 1 May 2003 04:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

I dunno - but I dreamt last night that I traded in some cds to buy an Avril Lavigne box-set. I've got to stop spending so much time on ILM, obviously.

It sounds like Alanis.

sounds like Alan is what?

Somehow this nu-metal stuff sounds so much better with a chick singer.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 1 May 2003 05:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah, it's almost like 80s pomp-metal power ballad melodrama filtered through contemporary alternachick sensibilities. The chorus is pretty classic. She had pretty cool stage presence performing it at the Junos.

'alternachick'!!!

New teen lingo ahoy!!

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 1 May 2003 05:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

It's easily the worst thing I've heard from Avril, as well as the worst thing I've heard this year.

I dream of a future where the matrix writes everyone's songs.

(PS Sonny: Hold the worries until you're 20 pages into a grad-level term paper on her.)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 1 May 2003 06:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

It's a Linkin Park song, only stupider, whinier, and packed to the brim with everything you hated about Alanis. There's not even a respectable hook as with the other Avril singles.

She is definitely losing her grip

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 1 May 2003 06:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

She should seriously release a proper studio vers. of Chop Suey.

jm (jtm), Thursday, 1 May 2003 13:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

Someone should seriously release a proper anvil onto her head.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 1 May 2003 13:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

is this the ballad? if so, i don't like it at all. certainly not as good as sk8r boi. quite boring, with a limp chorus. i really hope i'm talking about the right song, here...

that's exactly what i thought when i heard this. it really put the fear in me.

brian badword (badwords), Thursday, 1 May 2003 13:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

I haven't heard it, but if it doesn't sound exactly like the synth remix of Sk8r Boi then I hate it.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 1 May 2003 13:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

i heard/saw Avril's cover of 'Knockin On Heaven's Door' last night...is it just her or an ensemble thing? i think its on the new Help! album...

i'm going to call her Anvil Lavigne from now on.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 1 May 2003 13:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

I heard this in the store today and disliked it. I think I just want another "Sk8er Boi".

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 15 May 2003 01:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

don't we all

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 15 May 2003 01:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

I was so disappointed when I heard her album.

Kris (aqueduct), Thursday, 15 May 2003 01:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

FYI: "Losing Grip" is the first single from "Let Go" that was NOT written by Avril herself rather than the Matrix.

D...N...F...T...T..! Aaaargh!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 15 May 2003 06:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

I was disappointed when i realized that we lived in a part of the spacetime continuum that allowed this album to exist.

Alternachick is kinda oldschool, yo. Same goes for alternadude.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Friday, 16 May 2003 00:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

Just saw her rendition of Metallica's "Fuel" on that MTV Icon special. It made me pine for the original, which is odd, being that I think the original stinks out loud.
