It's all about "Suite Madame Blue"

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 1 May 2003 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

haha this is like the fourth Styx-related thread I've started in the last couple months.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 1 May 2003 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Babe

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 1 May 2003 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

This is timely... I just today found my Pieces of Eight cassette under a pile of shit (where it belongs, haha).

I pick "Blue Collar Man."

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 1 May 2003 04:45 (twenty-two years ago)

That was my #2 choice.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 1 May 2003 04:46 (twenty-two years ago)

"You know, if you take 'Styx' and get rid of the 't' and the 'y', and replace 'em with a 'u', you get 'SUX'!!!" (my ex-boyfriend, in one of his more intelligent moments)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 1 May 2003 04:52 (twenty-two years ago)

"Too Much Time on My Hands" it is.

Mainly for the fact that my elementary schoolmates and I used to sing along to it. And that acid-house intro. And that line about "a bottle of cold brew".

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 1 May 2003 04:58 (twenty-two years ago)

My number 2 pick: "She Cares"

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 1 May 2003 05:08 (twenty-two years ago)

"Come Sail Away" as rendered by Eric Cartman

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 1 May 2003 05:19 (twenty-two years ago)

What were your ex's less intelligent moments like?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 1 May 2003 05:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, no kidding. Was your ex-boyfriend a rock? What were you doing with him? Was he hung like Momus? Is this none of my damn business?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 1 May 2003 05:34 (twenty-two years ago)

easy, killer

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 1 May 2003 05:37 (twenty-two years ago)

heh. sorry.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 1 May 2003 05:41 (twenty-two years ago)

What were you doing with him?

I dunno. He's totally insane, though. You ever wonder about what kind of person calls up talk-radio shows to yell at the host for fifteen minutes? He's that guy. I still carry a torch, needless to say. :-)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 1 May 2003 05:53 (twenty-two years ago)

He once called up Howard Stern and berated him for saying nasty things about Yoko Ono.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 1 May 2003 05:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I like 'em crazy sometimes, too. For some reason, the sex is always really good. What is that?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 1 May 2003 05:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, look! I've derailed the thread beyond all repair!

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 1 May 2003 05:57 (twenty-two years ago)

You know, if you take "Styx" and get rid of the "t" and the "y," and replace 'em with an "e," you get "SEX"!!!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 1 May 2003 06:01 (twenty-two years ago)

"Lorelei"

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Thursday, 1 May 2003 06:33 (twenty-two years ago)

"Mr. Roboto" is actually kind of cool. :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 1 May 2003 06:57 (twenty-two years ago)

"Mr. Roboto" is fukin way cool. One of the first songs I ever really loved as a yoot.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 1 May 2003 06:59 (twenty-two years ago)

"Too Much Time on My Hands" purely for TS's flow on "sittin' on this bar stool talkin' like a damnfool". After that, every single track of theirs has something wrong with it. Like "Great White Hope" would've been cool if somebody else besides James Young sang it, every Dennis DeYoung song would've been bearable if somebody besides DD sang it. "Renegade" and "Blue Collar Man" would've been great if anybody besides Tommy Shaw sang them, anybody that is besides James Young or Dennis DeYoung or Larry Gowan or whoever. "Girls With Guns" was OK. Oh yeah I liked "Boat on a River" too

dave q, Thursday, 1 May 2003 09:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Come Sail Away for the sheer prog scale of it! I had this brilliant idea that you should play the first half of it, and then just as it starts to get faster and goes into the time signature change rockin' bit, you should suddenly switch it for the time signature change rockin' bit of Paranoid Android and see if anyone notice! And my freaking bastard Ex stole my idea, and did it the next time he DJ'd. But he was such a technically rubbish DJ that he f*cked it up and none of the assembled twee kids knew what the fuck it was on about. Grrrrrrr.

I used to love Styx when I was about 14.

kate, Thursday, 1 May 2003 09:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Anybody who likes anything Styx ever did should check out Uriah Heep's "The Wizard", completely blows them away!

dave q, Thursday, 1 May 2003 09:16 (twenty-two years ago)

"Renegade"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 1 May 2003 11:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Count me in as one of the late-childhood Styx fans. Perhaps this is why I appreciated how _Freaks & Geeks_ used "Lady" and "Come Sail Away." I owned both Cornerstone and Paradise Theatre - and loved them 'til I discovered punk rock literally months later.

mike a (mike a), Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, if I'm picking one song: as a kid I'd have said "Too Much Time On My Hands," but now it's got to be "Mr. Roboto."

mike a (mike a), Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

dave q, what do you think about about a homosexual reading of "The Wizard" ("me and my magic man kinda feelin' fine")? Anyway, yeah, glorious tune, as is the whole record really (love Thain and Kerslake especially on "Traveller in Time").

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 1 May 2003 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

er, only one "about" please

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 1 May 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

wait wait wait, wrong song; "Poet's Justice" is the song I was thinking of where Thain and Kerslake are especially ass-kicking.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 1 May 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

It's all about "Mr. Roboto" mainly because that's the only Styx song I actively know.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 1 May 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

C'mon, kids! Am I the only one who appreciates "Renegade"? Easily Tommy Shaw's finest hour!

"Oh Mama I'm in fear for my life from the loooong arm of the lawww...."

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 1 May 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the scream ("aaaaaayyyyyy!") that links the opening acapella section of "Renegade" to the first chorus. It loses steam for me by the second verse.

mike a (mike a), Thursday, 1 May 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

"The Best of Times", though I like everything that's been mentioned so far. I really like seeing their videos on VH1 Classic; they wear such ridiculous outfits. The bass player looks like he should've been in Joy Division!

Kris (aqueduct), Thursday, 1 May 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

dave q roxors

J (Jay), Thursday, 1 May 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude! "Castle Walls"!

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Thursday, 1 May 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

'homosexual reading of "The Wizard"'

Re Styx - how 'bout that "Lords of the RING" geddit? *snicker*

dave q, Thursday, 1 May 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

haha! I'm fucking bored. Let's talk about Uriah Heep. Is that a theremin at the beginning of "Sweet Lorraine"? Sounds like it but I can't really tell.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 1 May 2003 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno but Byron definitely sounds like one in the live version of "July Morning"!

dave q, Thursday, 1 May 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

three months pass...
My fave part of any Styx song is the ridiculous synth swell after the Big Riffs at the end of the guitar solo in "Renegade". I can just hear Dennis De Young whining in the studio "c'mon guys, I want to play something awesome too!"

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 09:07 (twenty-two years ago)

ts: "nothing ever goes as planned" vs steely dan's "don't take me alive"
