Julian Copes site http://www.headheritage.co.uk
Copes style of writing can be offputting to some, but then his enthusiasm for the bands/albums shine through. What do you all think Classic Or Dud?

Also any other similar sites that anyone wants to recommend?

Classic. One of the most engaging ego maniacs ever to go nuts and remain clear-headed enough to write about it.

I'd have to describe it as classic too. I've never seen the appeal of Julian Cope's music, rather I think he missed his true calling as one of the best music journalists there never was.

The most recent example I can think of would be his almost deranged with enthusiasm review of a Black Sabbath bootleg as the April 2003 album of the month. He really captures something of the elemental magic of the Sabbs, and made me rush to find a copy of Hole in the Sky to blast at top volume in tribute.

Not so keen on the rest of the site, mind, but as a forum for such lovely writing alone, its classic status should be assured.

He writes passionately about Armand Schaubroeck, but i've never seen anything by this guy. Anyone heard anything of him?

they've got 3 schaubroeck records at my station. every year or so i pull them out and listen to them for a couple of minutes, then i put them away and resolve to try again in one year. i still don't like them at all.

m carty has well summed up my feelings about mr. cope's music and writing.

Classic. If there was an editor with any wit or sense they'd have him signed up as a columnist.

He should get off his arse though and start making some rekkids again rather than tending his website.

Well, I hope he continues to do both. And let's pause in silence now to appreciate his lovely but surely long suffering wife Dorian.

Classic. Passionate & freaky. My taste & Mr. Cope's tend to have a great deal in common too

His radio sessions are fab entertainment too, esp. Godhaven’s Radio Savage Houndy Beasty (Pt 1)

Absolutely utter classic. The man in question may not have released a listenable album since 20 Mothers eight years ago (and even that one was a bit patchy), but his wit and style remain razor sharp. I may not always agree with his opinons, but he never fails to engage/entertain.

While we're on Cope, does anybody know if there's any truth in Popbitch's claim:

'Julian Cope has a new musical project called
Spazareth. The logo is an image of Jesus
in a wheelchair nailed to a cross.'

This makes me very happy.

CLASSIC. One of my alltime favorite music writers.

The music hasn't thrilled me much recently, though I really liked Interpreter from '96. It was much more melodic than I'd come to expect from him. And funny! Esp. "I Come from Another Planet, Baby" and "S.P.A.C.E.R.O.C.K. with Me".

Very enjoyable stuff though I haven't read the site in a while -- a couple of years back I was becoming a semi-regular here and there. And it was through the site I met Marco D., scholar and gent and good Net friend, who has turned me on to a slew of Italian singers and musicians I otherwise wouldn't have known about, including the great band he manages, Jennifer Gentle. So rah!

Has he ever written for Mojo or Uncut?

Acid Mother, Thursday, 1 May 2003 16:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

I believe he may have written some reviews in Mojo. NME could do with a few writers as passionate as him.

Has anyone heard the new Sunn0))) record? Cope does this monologue on the first track that's basically the same kind of tribute he'd write for HH, but much more ominous and poetic. His writeup in HH about Sunburned Hand of the Man was ace, too.

The new what record? Any Julian Cope spoken word is instantly classic.

Sunn0))). Drone/psych guitar duo. They get compared to Earth a lot, but I've never actually heard Earth, so I can't verify that one way or another. But it's great, great stuff.

Clay K., Friday, 2 May 2003 05:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think members of Goatsnake and Burning Witch are in Sunn0)))

News just in. Churn knob trouble by Huge and Unwanted Erections.

indeed. new one ('white 1') also features joe preston (thrones/earth/melvins), runhild gammelsaeter (thor's hammer) and apparently rex ritter (jessamine/fontanelle). cope track is nice, but the last track is really the best thing they've done since the merzbow collaborations on "flight of the behemoth."
