Anybody here heard these kids? They do Joy Division songs in deep dub. They're playing at Pianos in NYC tonight around 8 or so.

Well, there's the heavy reverb on the drum sounds, and the bloop-bloop space noises in that one song that has the line "I remember/when we were young," and the general big-room feel of the recording...drop the vocals from it (bringing in a key phrase here and there) and smoke a big fat blunt and you'll see what I mean

I guess I think of dub as (among other requisites) remixing stuff w/out the vocals, and the vocals on Unknown Pleasures seem a major part of it. However, I can't dispute the value of smoking a fat blunt and listening to the record, darn it.

But that argument can be equally applied to a lot of hip-hop and top 40 stuff, too. Dub is undoubtedly a producer's medium, but the converse isn't necessarily the case.

I dunno, the thing that struck me about this Timbaland collection I assembled a little while ago was how it actually reminded me of a dub compilation first and foremost. (Your larger point is taken, of course, but there's some interesting blending going on here -- especially given the roots of hip-hop in reggae and dub, etc. etc.)

Can folks come up with actual dub mixes/albums of punk and postpunk stuff? The only one I know offhand is the Ruts "Rhythm Collision", which is pretty cool. I'd love to know if anyone's gone further. I mean, a dub version of some Slits stuff could've been incredible. And yes, I hear the *influence* of dub in "Cut", but I mean a real attempt to transfigure existing music.

If you're interested in dub mixes of punk and post-punk, I'd recommend picking up the new "Wild Dub: Dread Meets Punk Rocker" compilation. Not only does it include the Ruts (Jah War) and the Slits (a wacked out dub of Typical Girls), it has the Pop Group, Killing Joke, the Clash, PiL, Generation X (who were actually the first group to do a dub mix, believe it or not) as well as forgotten groups such as Basement 5 and 4 Be 2. Also includes exellent liner nots by Vivien Goldman. Does anyone know who does the hidden track at the end?. Its something i've never heard before and its driving me nuts!

On the reissued version of 'Cut' there's a nice dub of 'Love and Romance'. Also the second Raincoats album 'Odyshape' sounds like a Scientist record but more angular and melodic.

OK, so apparently this band (which I've not heard and I'm not sure I care to) have a t-shirt that is simply the Unknown Pleasures cover, but instead of purely white lines, they red, green and yellow. If anyone, especially New Yorkers see this shirt, will you please pick one up for me?!! I'll double your purchase price! I wear medium or large. I'm asking this because this has to be the BEST T-SHIRT EVER.

Oddly enough, the only vinyl I found at the Unclaimed Luggage Center in Scottsboro, Alabama was about a dozen copies of the Jah Division 12".

I didn't buy one, but I wish there was an unclaimed T-shirt there.

three weeks pass...

finally picked up a copy of this 12". damn fine dub takes on JD tracks. i was very, very skeptical of this and avoided picking it up for a while. a copy was still in the racks at Wall of Sound so i grabbed it quick like (also got a copy of A Certain Ratio's "The Old and the New" in one of those snazzy Factory Linen boxes).
