Anybody here heard these kids? They do Joy Division songs in deep dub. They're playing at Pianos in NYC tonight around 8 or so.

mosurock (mosurock), Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Dread Zeppelin rides again, apparently.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Part of me thinks this makes perfect sense, part of me wants to beat them savagely.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i know one of the guys in this, sounds promising. recommended by me

steve k (http://go.to/stevek) (stevek10), Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought Unknown Pleasures was already a dub album, more or less

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 1 May 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

See, that's what I was thinking!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 May 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

How's that?

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Thursday, 1 May 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, there's the heavy reverb on the drum sounds, and the bloop-bloop space noises in that one song that has the line "I remember/when we were young," and the general big-room feel of the recording...drop the vocals from it (bringing in a key phrase here and there) and smoke a big fat blunt and you'll see what I mean

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 1 May 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess I think of dub as (among other requisites) remixing stuff w/out the vocals, and the vocals on Unknown Pleasures seem a major part of it. However, I can't dispute the value of smoking a fat blunt and listening to the record, darn it.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Thursday, 1 May 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

And also in the sense that it was a producer's album first and foremost, in a lot of ways...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 May 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

But that argument can be equally applied to a lot of hip-hop and top 40 stuff, too. Dub is undoubtedly a producer's medium, but the converse isn't necessarily the case.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Thursday, 1 May 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno, the thing that struck me about this Timbaland collection I assembled a little while ago was how it actually reminded me of a dub compilation first and foremost. (Your larger point is taken, of course, but there's some interesting blending going on here -- especially given the roots of hip-hop in reggae and dub, etc. etc.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 May 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Can folks come up with actual dub mixes/albums of punk and postpunk stuff? The only one I know offhand is the Ruts "Rhythm Collision", which is pretty cool. I'd love to know if anyone's gone further. I mean, a dub version of some Slits stuff could've been incredible. And yes, I hear the *influence* of dub in "Cut", but I mean a real attempt to transfigure existing music.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Thursday, 1 May 2003 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

If you're interested in dub mixes of punk and post-punk, I'd recommend picking up the new "Wild Dub: Dread Meets Punk Rocker" compilation. Not only does it include the Ruts (Jah War) and the Slits (a wacked out dub of Typical Girls), it has the Pop Group, Killing Joke, the Clash, PiL, Generation X (who were actually the first group to do a dub mix, believe it or not) as well as forgotten groups such as Basement 5 and 4 Be 2. Also includes exellent liner nots by Vivien Goldman. Does anyone know who does the hidden track at the end?. Its something i've never heard before and its driving me nuts!

Jeff K (jeff k), Thursday, 1 May 2003 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Worth it for the Killing Joke track alone!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 1 May 2003 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Yep, Turn to Red, the best track on the CD.

Jeff K (jeff k), Thursday, 1 May 2003 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

This conversation just made me hunt down an old cassette of a New Order Peel session. "Turn the Heater On", right?

David A. (Davant), Thursday, 1 May 2003 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

X O Dus "English Black Boys" to thread

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

just downloaded this. It sorta sucks, in the same way that Dub Side of the Moon sucked. The novelty of this kinda thing is wearing off on me really quick...

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 2 May 2003 06:07 (twenty-two years ago)

New Order have just covered "Vietnam".

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 2 May 2003 07:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn´t there a dub version of Unknown pleasures made but someone of them recorded over the tape by mistake ?

Jens (brighter), Friday, 2 May 2003 08:01 (twenty-two years ago)

if you think 'cut' has a dub influence you should hear the second slits album, 'return of the giant slits'. it's genius.

j fail (cenotaph), Friday, 2 May 2003 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

On the reissued version of 'Cut' there's a nice dub of 'Love and Romance'. Also the second Raincoats album 'Odyshape' sounds like a Scientist record but more angular and melodic.

ss, Friday, 2 May 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm not sure

garthan, Friday, 2 May 2003 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Return of the giants slits is GREAT

Jens (brighter), Saturday, 3 May 2003 07:46 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
OK, so apparently this band (which I've not heard and I'm not sure I care to) have a t-shirt that is simply the Unknown Pleasures cover, but instead of purely white lines, they red, green and yellow. If anyone, especially New Yorkers see this shirt, will you please pick one up for me?!! I'll double your purchase price! I wear medium or large. I'm asking this because this has to be the BEST T-SHIRT EVER.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

...they're...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Long live "Billy Jah" the high concept dub band from West Oakland who covered Billy Joel's greatest shits in a most inpercievable manner.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I like my Noise Noise Noise T-shirt which is essentially the UP cover -- white on black -- with the store's name in the Closer font below it. A nice variant.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, I picked up a Jah Division button last time I was in NYC, from the counter of Kim's. I just ordered a copy of the 12-inch from the website, but even without hearing it I'm pretty sure I want that t-shirt too.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 27 January 2005 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm wearing it RIGHT NOW!!!! It's my favorite shirt ever.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Thursday, 27 January 2005 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

And the band is great, by the way -- but I'm biased 'cause they're mostly friends. But it's really not so much novelty, especially live.

They're playing Friday at Mighty Robot, so you can probably buy a tshirt then, I bet.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Thursday, 27 January 2005 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

But I live in L.A.!!!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 27 January 2005 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

the ep is great - 'transmission' in particular - but i can't believe they didn't do 'decades'. that song was made to be dubbed.

stirmonster, Thursday, 27 January 2005 01:28 (twenty-one years ago)

There's an MP3 of "Dub Will Tear Us Apart" right here:
http://www.thesocialregistry.com/index2.html
(unfortunately it sounds shitty and super compressed... but the music sounds like solid gold)

Weird - Google search turns up the fact that they are not the first "Jah Division" on record!:

Chuckling at the Tomkat's Marquee (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 27 January 2005 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Spencer, I'll see what I can do, no promises.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Thursday, 27 January 2005 02:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Me too me too!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 27 January 2005 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

this stuff is actually pretty good!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 27 January 2005 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

oh man, that's great. i might as well go to the show on friday. If I see one and I have enough money I'll pick it up for you (but don't count on me-- i might not go). I might get one for myself-- this band is awesome. I hope they'll be selling a CD version.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Thursday, 27 January 2005 03:00 (twenty-one years ago)

The best thing about the shirt -- when cute hipster girls approach you and say "oh, I love Joy Division," you get to go "Huh? Who?" -- it's the little things that make life precious, you know.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Thursday, 27 January 2005 03:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I want one, now.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 27 January 2005 03:10 (twenty-one years ago)

We should start a collection.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 27 January 2005 03:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i caught this band at CMJ this year and it was one of the best things i witnessed in 2004. im working on bringing them to philly.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 27 January 2005 04:04 (twenty-one years ago)

TS: These guys vs. Boy Division, who do Boyzone songs in a JoyDiv stylee. Or maybe the other way round. No, I think it's right the first time.

Both groups sound like it's a great idea when you're pissed with you're mates at the pub, but pretty stupid to bring it to fruition.

Sasha (sgh), Thursday, 27 January 2005 04:29 (twenty-one years ago)

They're opening for Animal Collective at the Bowery in late February. Woo-hoo!

poortheatre (poortheatre), Thursday, 27 January 2005 04:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Now that i think about it, so many JD songs are perfect for dubness-ising.

Nic de Teardrop (Nicholas), Thursday, 27 January 2005 05:04 (twenty-one years ago)

My 12-inch single just arrived today...$10 postpaid!

Did anyone ever get extra shirts at their recent shows?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

Oddly enough, the only vinyl I found at the Unclaimed Luggage Center in Scottsboro, Alabama was about a dozen copies of the Jah Division 12".

I didn't buy one, but I wish there was an unclaimed T-shirt there.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

haj division. muslimgauze-style remixes of jah division songs. who's in?

i still haven't seen one of these t-shirts or buttons and i live in new york and go to kim's all the time. my hipster echolocation is so off.

pm (p-m), Thursday, 17 February 2005 03:36 (twenty years ago)

By the way, the single's great, but it almost sounds better slowed down to 33.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 17 February 2005 03:50 (twenty years ago)

Must agree there with Sean. Quite grand.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 February 2005 03:53 (twenty years ago)

I'm VERY impressed with the tracks I heard.. at either speed! It's not corny, as I expected it would sound.

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 17 February 2005 04:22 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I know, looking back on the early posts up top, my fears were unfounded. Has to be said that the slow versions remind me of Low's majestic take on "Transmission" in a way, but with different goals and results. Their "Disorder" at 33 rpm is ASTONISHING.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 February 2005 04:24 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
finally picked up a copy of this 12". damn fine dub takes on JD tracks. i was very, very skeptical of this and avoided picking it up for a while. a copy was still in the racks at Wall of Sound so i grabbed it quick like (also got a copy of A Certain Ratio's "The Old and the New" in one of those snazzy Factory Linen boxes).

Jah Div. -- Highly Recommended!

biznotic, Thursday, 10 March 2005 03:44 (twenty years ago)

eight months pass...
So what happened to these guys? The 12" is apparently sold out (my loss), and The Social Registry hasn't said a damn thing about them since. Their "Transmission" is fucking great.

telephone thing, Saturday, 3 December 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

I only heared "Love will tear us apart" which was excellent.

mark grout (mark grout), Sunday, 4 December 2005 10:51 (twenty years ago)

thirteen years pass...

So whaddaya know -- original EP rereleased with extra tracks from the time.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 10 January 2019 19:30 (seven years ago)

good news!

mh, Thursday, 10 January 2019 20:41 (seven years ago)

Oh man this is genius!

calstars, Thursday, 10 January 2019 20:47 (seven years ago)

Excellent indeed. Could someone pass me the joint, please?
