Please contrast and compare.

I have purchased the entire Come catalogue and am well into Fuck - quite lovely indeed.

Is it possible to enjoy one without the other???

BurmaKitty (BurmaKitty), Thursday, 1 May 2003 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Shouldn't the title of this thread be inverted to "Fuck and Come?"

maria b (maria b), Thursday, 1 May 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I prefer Fuck. Seen them both and I think Fuck is better live too.

Carey (Carey), Thursday, 1 May 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Come much more than Fuck.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 1 May 2003 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe it was an invitation.

BurmaKitty (BurmaKitty), Thursday, 1 May 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Come always seemed sort've lifeless and dour to me. I liked Thalia's stuff in Live Skull, but Come just didn't do it for me.

As for Fuck? I've never listened to their music, but if they have to resort to tactics like calling themselve "fuck," I can't imagine they're anything much to write home about.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 1 May 2003 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

The Steve Wynn album with Come as the backing band is pretty good. Not his best, but one of his better solo albums.

mte, Thursday, 1 May 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Come the US band or Come the Whitehouse precursor?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 1 May 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Come the US band or Come the Whitehouse precursor?
-- electric sound of jim

Well, it is a compare and contrast. I suppose some Come is better than other Come and sure, even pre-Come qualifies.

As for Fuck? I've never listened to their music, but if they have to resort to tactics like calling themselve "fuck," I can't imagine they're anything much to write home about.

Oh, Alex. Really, the name Fuck is actually great since naming one's band/project something that is bound to keep them from getting listened to is so wonderfully conterproductive it's a turn on right there.

Sure, you could sit around and contemplate what the fuck Fuck would sound like...and chances are all your ideas would be wrong. The songs are utterly beautiful and Fuck Motel is rapture in under 3 minutes. When my tv mini series is out, this will be the theme song. Fuck, it's the theme song they play when I enter the room now...

...or at least it's the tune I can't get out of my head today.

BurmaKitty (BurmaKitty), Thursday, 1 May 2003 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Haven't heard Fuck, but Come is really good. The pre-Come band (I HAD to say that!) the Bar-B-Q Killers was great too.

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Friday, 2 May 2003 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

what is the bar-b-q killers connection? precious little info on AMG ("formal connections: Come" - thanks guys)

ron (ron), Friday, 2 May 2003 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck is GREAT!! Check out Conduct (Matador) for a good starting point. Good live shows, too.

Will (will), Friday, 2 May 2003 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

STERLING TO THE THREAD...

jm (jtm), Friday, 2 May 2003 02:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Alex, the coolest thing about Fuck was always that you expected them to sound like a band called "Fuck" and then they turned out to be sort of polite and pretty. And not even like they called themselves "Fuck" to make up for it: the whole thing suddenly becomes way more casual than you might imagine.

I've never listened to much of either, but Fuck.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 2 May 2003 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Sometimes it is nice to be surprised. However, with a name like Fuck, I want it coming at me fast and hard. Anything less is a RIP OFF!

Roman, Friday, 2 May 2003 03:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh good god, I thought that was Ronan!

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 2 May 2003 03:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh why me? I guess because 11:11 is a fantastic album as were the next few after which I stopped playing attention to Come. They fucking shred -- so murky and harsh, like how I imagine Deep Purple might sound given that I've never heard Deep Purple and barely heard them described.

What I like best is that they feel like they fill the whole of the sonic landscape, that I can feel the chords dripping out through my speakers. Another k-classic from the tail of indie-rock's heroic period.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 2 May 2003 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

given that I've never heard Deep Purple

Fuckin' SHAME on you, Sterl you girl!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 2 May 2003 03:57 (twenty-two years ago)

my mother threatened to throw a tape i had in the car player out the window cuz patti on brave new waves said, "this next band is called, well, fuck..." - i left that intro in when i taped the song off the radio just to piss her off, of course. i was so punk rock with the indie folk. or whatever it was.

i saw them play a few years later and they had some kinda wooden robot gadget on stage that i remember a lot better than any of their music. i think their albums came with 'fuck' crayons and balloons and other things too.

brian badword (badwords), Friday, 2 May 2003 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

and a lovely 'fuck' sticker complete with, erm, sign language of the band name too..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 2 May 2003 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Come were hands down the best live band of the groovie ghoulie era (89-92) in NYC. Cop Shoot Cop were in the running when they were still basically Dig Dat Hole ripping off aesthetic moves from, well, others, but Come were phenomenal six or seven gigs in a row. Fuck should be better with that name.

Sasha Frere-Jones (Sasha Frere-Jones), Friday, 2 May 2003 04:06 (twenty-two years ago)

WATCH THAT!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 2 May 2003 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

11:11 is so freaking epic -- like the songs all really take a while to gel, and there's enough complexity to keep drawing me in.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 2 May 2003 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Zedek + Brokaw = Majesty.

There's something about the spiralling way those guitars scratched and clawed at each other that seems to me completely original and unduplicated. And maybe I caught Come on particularly good nights, but their gigs: transcendent.

I like Zedek's new solo stuff, as well, but I miss dem loud gueetars!!

(This is my first ILM post by the way. This place pretty much rocks).

Wired Flounder (Wired Flounder), Friday, 2 May 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Welcome to us. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 2 May 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks, Ned. :-)

I find these bands pretty difficult to compare, by the way. They're bands for completely different purposes. I mean, Fuck is music you might play at 4 in the afternoon. Come is more like 3 a.m.

Wired Flounder (Wired Flounder), Friday, 2 May 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Why not like both? Theirs no point in fucking if you can't come, and theirs no way to come without fucking...at least no way that isn't lonely and pathetic.
(i'm amazed this isn't a calum thread)

puh-lease, this is CLEARLY a BurmaKitty incarnation.

Just remember, the more I talk about it generally means the less I am getting. I only have had two full length Fuck's (Pardon my French - Conduct) then there's some sampler. I seem to have plenty of Come though.

(This is my first ILM post by the way. This place pretty much rocks).
-- Wired Flounder

Flounder, I am truly honored and inspired that you introduced yourself in my bed, ...I mean thread. It almost makes it all worthwhile... the shame, public humiliation, electric bills, back owed taxes, excommunication from the church, etc.

BurmaKitty (BurmaKitty), Saturday, 3 May 2003 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Burma Kitty, you little minx. Oh how I long to make you scream my name repeatedly.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Saturday, 3 May 2003 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

oh...my! That would be a mouthful!

BurmaKitty (BurmaKitty), Saturday, 3 May 2003 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

The thing about Come's music is that it's the most UN-sexy music I can think of, completely at odds with their name.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 3 May 2003 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I think their name fits actually, but don't know how to explain why without um... going there.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Saturday, 3 May 2003 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

oh...my! That would be a mouthful!
Nah. You just go "Ohhhh, LOOOORD!"

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Saturday, 3 May 2003 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

The singer in Come is that same singer as BBQ Killers...........

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Saturday, 3 May 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought the singer in Athens based BBK was a midget.

Roman (Roman), Saturday, 3 May 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, Roman! (there, I shouted SOMEONE'S name!)

...thank you! I need to make a new thread now because of you!

BurmaKitty (BurmaKitty), Saturday, 3 May 2003 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I would hope you weren't the only one!

Roman (Roman), Sunday, 4 May 2003 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently I'm not usually the ONLY one. I generally do prefer groups.

...now if I could just figure out which one...

Come or Fuck?

BurmaKitty (BurmaKitty), Sunday, 4 May 2003 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess we shall find out soon.

Roman (Roman), Sunday, 4 May 2003 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

What time so I can pencil you in my calendar?

Shall I queue up for "In/Out" or just "Straddle"?

BurmaKitty (BurmaKitty), Sunday, 4 May 2003 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought I already gave you an ETA! Just designate coordinates and I'll be there.

That picture of you in front of the WHEAT PASTE posters will have to get me through until then.

Have you checked your text message yet?

Roman (Roman), Sunday, 4 May 2003 03:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Thank Lord (Custos) that no one reads these threads!

BurmaKitty (BurmaKitty), Sunday, 4 May 2003 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I second that emotion. It's a shame that there is no author edit function on this board. Shouldn't you be getting some sleep?

Roman (Roman), Sunday, 4 May 2003 03:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Flounder that there was a grebt first post, welcome to ilx0r

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Sunday, 4 May 2003 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Eleven:Eleven is so good I own two copies. I like Thalia's solo stuff too.

Fuck had a funny thing about celebrities on their website. Britnery Spears went to a Fuck show!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Sunday, 4 May 2003 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe she wanted to see how good their cover of "Oops..." was

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 4 May 2003 09:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I still don't remember Thalia being in BBK. I do remember a time when I took a trip to Athens way, way back in the mid-eighties when some midget described as the singer in a band called the Bar-Be-Que Killers was screaming at some house party (was Gravity Creeps playing or not? LSD has a strange way of distorting one's memory) about how great GG Allin was.

Roman (Roman), Sunday, 4 May 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks for your kind words, JOhn D. and BK. You doth make this fish's blood run warm.

Wasn't it Arthur Johnson who had played for the BBQKs prior to joining Come?

Wired Flounder (Wired Flounder), Monday, 5 May 2003 03:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know why I asked that last question. The answer is yes.

Wired Flounder (Wired Flounder), Monday, 5 May 2003 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Arthur Johnson (drummer).

Wired Flounder (Wired Flounder), Monday, 5 May 2003 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks for clearing that up, Flounder!

Now if someone could just help clear up this nasty rash...

BurmaKitty (BurmaKitty), Monday, 5 May 2003 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

great! I no longer have a nasty rash to share, but I do have a photo of Chris Brokaw from last month...no Come or Fuck footage, seeing how this is as close as it comes lately...
