the two tracks by go! team on memphis industries estuary english comp are doing my head in. the rest of the comp i could care less about.

any one know anything about them? they're not the cal johnson band of the (almost)same name.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 2 May 2003 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

they had a single out on Pickled Egg that wasn't bad. PE were meant to release their album too but apparently that's not happening anymore for various reasons..

me too! they're fantastic.

i did a bit of checking up and apparently they've only recently signed to memphis industries, so hopefully a release of their own won't be too far down the track.

Mil, Friday, 2 May 2003 07:01 (twenty-two years ago)

its samples right? its so lofi i thought my walkman was fcked.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 2 May 2003 08:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahaha yeah, I think that's part of the charm tho. I'd say Ladyflash is all sampled but dunno about Junior Kickstart.... seems like they might've played the guitar at least. They remind me of Gerling.

Just found some info - GO TEAM Junior Kickstart EP out May 26 on 7", 12" and CD. Hopefully there's something new on it.

Mil, Friday, 2 May 2003 08:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I think that's part of the charm tho

yeah.
maybe i should relisten to gerling?

i love the way junkick starts like its an indie tune and the *bam* the horns kick in. and the harmonica solo!

will be checking for the e.p. thanks Mil.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 2 May 2003 09:11 (twenty-two years ago)

The Go! Team are fucking brilliant.

alexfack (alexfack), Friday, 2 May 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
i just got the junior kickstart single, and i can't stop listening to it. it's fucking great!
maybe i should relisten to the gerling album. i didn't think it was as charming as the go! team when i heard it.

joan vich (joan vich), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

which gerling album? their last one was shithouse and the new one is likely to be even worse

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

hi jim.
well, i just read Mil's message above saying that the go! team sound a bit like gerling? hence that line in my post. as far as i can recall i didn't like gerling either, but...

joan vich (joan vich), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

their first 'proper' album (the title of which escapes me) is probably in a similarish vein.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 10:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm glad you're sure jim. i gave gerling such a cursory listen i couldn't remember...

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 10:51 (twenty-two years ago)

but it doesn't have the same indie lo-fi sound, does it?

joan vich (joan vich), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

brrrrrrrrrrrrr. anyone got a gerling disc they can lend me?

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i only have the two Fellaheen records they did back when they wanted to be Sebadoh

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

that ladyflash track is amazing, I shall definitely have to get this single this week. There is another great song on that compilation, theBlue states one with a Greek name, it's ace.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

uh, do i have to relisten again?

jim, yr a showoff.

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

yay

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

two months pass...
god junior kickstart is a great song. who are these people, and are they putting out a longer release?

Dan I. (Dan I.), Monday, 28 July 2003 06:15 (twenty-one years ago)

a full length is coming out on the same label, not sure when though.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 28 July 2003 06:20 (twenty-one years ago)

The tracks from the single are on slsk, but none from the EP, which sounds like it's out. time to buy...

one year passes...
Isn't the new one great?

flowersdie (flowersdie), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 12:41 (twenty years ago)

They remind me a little of the great Plus-Tech Squeeze Box.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 13:44 (twenty years ago)

Thunder Lightning Strike elpee in September wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeee hurrah. I am still waiting for Rough Trade to deliver with my copy of the single, what is it like exactly?

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 15:38 (twenty years ago)

Dave Fischer said they're the UK's answer to Andrew WK.

Typhoon is Coming!!! :O (ex machina), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 15:38 (twenty years ago)

they are really awful live. save yr money. it is like seeing an indie version of technotronic. no team no! but the album is good.

doomie x, Tuesday, 3 August 2004 17:51 (twenty years ago)

ALBUM OF THE YEAR

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Friday, 13 August 2004 21:31 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
So I popped into Fopp last night and grabbed a copy of Thunder Lightning Strike off the new release shelf. 'Do I go with the ILM hype on this one and buy this on spec?', I wondered. Fortunately, the nice people at Fopp chose that very moment to put the CD on in the shop.

It's a bit relentlessly full-on, isn't it? Mostly instrumental, with Big Beat drums-of-death and insistent 60s-style melodies (cf. "Apache", stuff like that), plus shouting kids. I probably would have loved this when I was half my current age, but now it sounded to me like a recipe for a headache.

The one track that I liked unreservedly on that first listen was "Bottle Rocket", mainly because the rapping on it reminded me of my favourite homegirls THE COOKIE CREW. In fact, it may even have been them, or a sample of them. Can anyone confirm? There are precious few credits on the CD sleeve.

I didn't buy it.

Jeff W (zebedee), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 11:29 (twenty years ago)

I have a feeling that NONE of it is sampled and they do all of it themselves but this may just be rockist-wishful-thinking-kind-of on my part. I do think it is the case though. The Power Is On is the Highest Drama ever and lots of bits of it are teatime ITV music again and Bottle Rocket is all Cookie Crew-ish as you say and air raid sirens are always a guilty pleasure and it's all so URGENT and delirious, there's almost kind of a BoC-ish super-childhood-evokey quality to it which is colossally moving and ace and I really really love this record such a lot (35 minutes is a superb album length also)

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 11:56 (twenty years ago)

That "2-4-6-8-10" thing in Bottle Rocket is nicked from Shirley Ellis's "soul time". Whether it's sampled or not I couldn't say. Nor do I care, it sounds great.

Tag (Tag), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 12:00 (twenty years ago)

honestly, i would avoid the live act. what they do on record, they cannot pull off live. i've seen them twice and it was awful both times. it was just like a wall noise with the rapper shouting above it. the thing is, i don't think, that they wanted to do a wall of noise. it was really bad both times. and they try to hype the crowd, she's sort of like ya kid k.

so yeah, avoid the live act. i can't listen to the album because i've seen them live. and it brings back powerfully bad memories of how awful it was.

doomie x, Tuesday, 14 September 2004 12:04 (twenty years ago)

about playing everything themselves, i haven't heard the album but the junior kickstart ep was basically samples and beats.
and i loved it to death.

joan vich (joan vich), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:41 (twenty years ago)

Alex from Donny OTM

flowersdie (flowersdie), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 15:56 (twenty years ago)

Huddle Information is a great track.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:20 (twenty years ago)

My first impression of this album was when I accidentally played all 12 tracks in Winamp at once. Sounded REALLY horrible.

On track three now and it sounds great.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 19 September 2004 19:07 (twenty years ago)

flowersdie, do you mean none of it is sampled? no way.

joan vich (joan vich), Monday, 20 September 2004 07:39 (twenty years ago)

i really do think judging recordings based on a live show is folly of the highest order

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Monday, 20 September 2004 08:17 (twenty years ago)

I've seen them live once and I thought it was fucking GREAT! I loved the girl rapper, loved the double drumming, loved the call & response-routine they did with the crowd!

Hanna (Hanna), Monday, 20 September 2004 08:32 (twenty years ago)

so when are they recording something new?

joan vich (joan vich), Monday, 20 September 2004 08:53 (twenty years ago)

i'm telling you - live - you realise it is the indie-technotronic. its equivelent of having someone sell you something on an infocommercial - loud, annoying and no fun..

o.k. i want one side of you to say: no
and the other side of the crowd to say: team

NO
TEAM

NO
TEAM

OH GOD JESUS CHRIST NOOOOOOOOO....

doomie x, Monday, 20 September 2004 09:28 (twenty years ago)

Indie Technotronic sounds like a great idea!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 20 September 2004 09:57 (twenty years ago)

hey doomie can you email me if you get a moment? i have a small question for ya..

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Monday, 20 September 2004 10:25 (twenty years ago)

Its alot different to the now never to be released Pickled Egg album. Much less Morricone and far more hip hop inspired.'Get it Together' seems to have been re-recorded from the first single, too.

flowersdie (flowersdie), Monday, 20 September 2004 12:15 (twenty years ago)

Nearly everyone loves Technotronic, don't they? Dunno who they are myself

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 20 September 2004 12:17 (twenty years ago)

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Monday, 20 September 2004 12:54 (twenty years ago)

That's my favourite ILX-meme ever. I like the Go! Team album a lot, though.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 20 September 2004 13:04 (twenty years ago)

go team steal concepts from transglobal underground

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 23:56 (twenty years ago)

How so? I don't really hear it (apart from formal genre connections).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 23 December 2004 00:01 (twenty years ago)

similar concepts remember the esoteric early 90s track: temple head. Transglobal Underground were doing what Go Team are doing now, back in the early 90s

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 23 December 2004 00:04 (twenty years ago)

Well, it sounds pretty different to me, and not just the context.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 23 December 2004 00:31 (twenty years ago)

terrible live show.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 23 December 2004 01:50 (twenty years ago)

void the live act. i can't listen to the album because i've seen them live. and it brings back powerfully bad memories of how awful it was.
This exact same thing happened to me when I saw the Olivia Tremor Control.

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 23 December 2004 03:40 (twenty years ago)

the album is going to get more profile USA side in 2005, i believe that Memphis Industries are working on a proper distribution deal.
and i dont get the TU connection at all?

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 23 December 2004 08:30 (twenty years ago)

nah me either. i luv the album.

bulbs (bulbs), Thursday, 23 December 2004 08:40 (twenty years ago)

Completely baffled by the Transglobal thing too.

Chewshabad00, Thursday, 23 December 2004 10:28 (twenty years ago)

Matt, did you go and see them in the end? How were they?

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 23 December 2004 10:43 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
Spencer, did you ever end up getting this?

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 13 January 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

Still haven't seen it...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 14 January 2005 00:08 (twenty years ago)

It's back up on the OM website, that's why I thought of you.

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 14 January 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

Ah! Thanks, I'll check Amoeba tonight probably, but if not I might order it from them.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 14 January 2005 00:11 (twenty years ago)

I understood the interest, really - the wackiness, the tributes to instrumental music from th A-Team, Night Rider, the Waltons, Highway To Heaven and the Littlest Hobo, the indie-funk Technotronic...but only 2 (or 4) great songs seemed to come out of it (and one of them wasn't 'Junior Kickstart', which I bought for 50p and has 'We Listen Everyday' on it, which makes up its overall value). 'Ladyflash' is very special, and that Hot Chip mix is the best thing they've done, which probably means it's the pinnaclew of both their careers. The rest just bored me. If I want big beat anew, I've got their Japanese labelmates, Plus-Tech and Fab Cushion, for that action.

Captain GRRRios' Giggletits (Barima), Friday, 14 January 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

To whit.

Captain GRRRios' Giggletits (Barima), Friday, 14 January 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

void the live act. i can't listen to the album because i've seen them live. and it brings back powerfully bad memories of how awful it was.

Nooooo! I bloody hope this isn't true, since i'm off to see them next week, I *love* the album and I'm interviewing the band as well...argh!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 14 January 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

The girls sound like they should be in Parappa!

Captain GRRRios' Giggletits (Barima), Friday, 14 January 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

Betty Boo joins The Avalanches, then? Right.

Interview's tomorrow early evening - any questions, folks? (I got plenty, natch, just wondering)

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 20 January 2005 00:14 (twenty years ago)

"ladyflash" has a sample from the movie "wild style" in.

the "you gotta something-something and do the do" bit.

I noticed.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 20 January 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

bumpitty bump.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 20 January 2005 08:31 (twenty years ago)

I finally realize what the origin of the phrase "The Go! Team" is (both this group, and the Calvin Johnson/Tobi Vail group from the late 80s)..

it's the name given to the accident team that's part of an aircraft manufacturer to retrieve the black box after an airplane has crashed.

donut christ (donut), Thursday, 20 January 2005 09:41 (twenty years ago)

(maybe this was just common knowledge, but I didn't know this until today.. just like "jumping the shark".. so ignore me.. anyway..)

donut christ (donut), Thursday, 20 January 2005 09:42 (twenty years ago)

i never knew that .. ta ..

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 20 January 2005 09:44 (twenty years ago)

does anyone else find this impossible to listen to cos of the searing fucking way it's mastered. so trebley and scratchy. maybe it's just the way our sound setup is at work but despite liking some of the tracks it hurts my ears to listen to this.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 20 January 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

i like that ronan. makes me feel i'm listening to something edgy!

bulbs (bulbs), Thursday, 20 January 2005 10:43 (twenty years ago)

took some getting used to .. but yes i love it

.. i did wonder though if the quality was due to low budget .. or tis actually all clever clever computerised soundmaking .. to make it sound so ruff ..

will be interesting to see what new stuff sounds like ..

m.e

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 20 January 2005 10:46 (twenty years ago)

rather than clever clever or budget i like to imagine its just the way they work

bulbs (bulbs), Thursday, 20 January 2005 10:57 (twenty years ago)

yeah .. i reckon so.

which makes Memphis Industries damn fine to allow something so ruff out .. as opposed to forcing the band smooth it all out.

m.e

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 20 January 2005 11:00 (twenty years ago)

They are great live Charlie. Ignore the haterz.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 20 January 2005 11:06 (twenty years ago)

Yeah I like'em live too. I've seen them twice. I've interviewed them as well Charlie but I can't really remember what I asked, I think we talked about the obvious, 80s cheerleading movies etc... If I were you I'd try and get to talk to the singer girl as well as the music making guy, who was very nice and all that, but not so talkative.

Hanna (Hanna), Thursday, 20 January 2005 12:00 (twenty years ago)

Sorry Nick, missed your post earlier. No, I couldn't get a ticket, or get on the guest list either. They are playing the Concorde 2 on Tues March 8th, so when I get paid next I'm going to get tickets.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Thursday, 20 January 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
saw them in Bristol last night. i was ready for the excesssive verbals from Ninja .. so that didn't annoy me.
in fact i reckon they are a superb live act now. and discussions with relevant folks imply that the band are a LOT tighter now than their earlier outings.

readying themselves for serious Festival action .. which is only right as their noisy party grooves are perfect festival soundtrack sounds ..

oh, and the support by the Pipettes was somewhat lovely ..

mark e (mark e), Monday, 21 February 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

Not so sure about DJ scotch egg tho...

pickled egg, Monday, 21 February 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

Just bought the album and I like it quite a lot apart from the massive fucking sticker that read:
"POSSIBLY THE GREATEST DEBUT OF THE YEAR, the NME"

... which I ripped off immediately.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 00:11 (twenty years ago)

DJ Scotch Egg !!!!! i mean really .. for 2 mins - v.funny. for 15 .. really effing annoying .. the crowd were getting somewhat angry ..

altogether now "- K-F-C -"

very bizarre ..
