If you could promote any one band to the height of fame, who would it be?

My vote goes to the Mystery Girls of Green Bay, WI.

my own

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 2 May 2003 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

The Meatls.

paul cox (paul cox), Friday, 2 May 2003 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Fonda 500. When I am king, Fonda 500 will be headlining every night. At Wembley Stadium. In fact, when I am king, I will ban all music that is *not* Fonda 500.

kate, Friday, 2 May 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

really? i assume they must have improved since "Super chimpanzee"

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 2 May 2003 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Slodgenessabounds

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 2 May 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Mclusky

neil, Friday, 2 May 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

The Russian Futurists. They should be as big as ABBA.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Friday, 2 May 2003 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The Paybacks - rock n roll
The Distillers - punk

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 2 May 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.cdshakedown.com/05_2001/themwranch.jpg

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 2 May 2003 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

That'd be those basement-delling nonentities The Distillers, then... sorry, I'm just being rude.

Um, not McLusky. I don't think they'd react well to the height of fame, much as the idea seems delicious.

Scissorfight perhaps. The Darkness. And this guy called Kennedy who lives in Pontypool.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 2 May 2003 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Fonda 500 are awful and bland.

I'd promote Glass Candy simply because Ida No on CD:UK would be a revelation.

ss, Friday, 2 May 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

The Chameleons have gotten to the point where they can actually tour around again in America, so clearly the answer is the Walkabouts. If famous enough to tour anywhere at all, though, the Squirrels.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 2 May 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

"I'd promote Glass Candy simply because Ida No on CD:UK would be a revelation."

Oh fuck yeah - Gravy Train!!!! [the exclamation points are theirs y'know] Getting a rise in front of RI:SE... I support this idea...

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 2 May 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Mencap - Pontypool? God, the heights we reach on here....!

russ t, Friday, 2 May 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, this is my freaking universe, not yours. I haven't taken pot-shots at the bands that you would like to promote!

kate, Friday, 2 May 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, but they are a bit... boring! Wouldn't you rather promote a more exciting band to the height of fame?

ss, Friday, 2 May 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Did it possibly occur to you that I don't find them boring at all? They're possibly one of the most "exciting" live bands I've ever seen. That's it, when I am king, off with your head.

kate, Friday, 2 May 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Richard Hell and the Voidoids- cuz I would totally be hitting that shit.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 2 May 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Um, that is if it was 1977.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 2 May 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Fonda 500 Boring? Is it the same fonda that we're discussing here?

I actually don't want to promote any band that I like to the height of fame, cos if they get famous it'll probably fuck them up, and won't be as good as they are now

jellybean (jellybean), Friday, 2 May 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

A very good rock-and-roll band in San Diego called The North Atlantic. At the very least, they should be on a label with some good distro and PR.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 2 May 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

My band (ha!) and the Boredoms so they would play some shows around here again!

original bgm, Friday, 2 May 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

The Two-Minute Miracles, though, in Canada, they're doing a pretty good job on their own. I'd also be tempted to help boost the Constantines and Royal City to the next level of fame. Maybe going door to door with a boom box or something, giving the nice people free samples.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Friday, 2 May 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe in the case of Royal City, if you're going door to door, you might want to offer some chamomile tea too.
Alone At The Microphone is one of my favourite albums. I don't listen to it nearly enough.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 2 May 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

WCKR SPGT and/or Furniture Huschle, no question.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 2 May 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Bunny Brains!!!!!

scott seward, Friday, 2 May 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

jaymc: North Atlantic didn't start in IL, did they?

buttch (Oops), Friday, 2 May 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Mountain Goats, Max Tundra.. Xiu Xiu should write a few really good pop songs and be somewhere between the height of fame and where they are now.

Adam A. (Keiko), Friday, 2 May 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

JOHNNY OTIS!

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 2 May 2003 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Buttch, they actually started in Michigan. (I went to school with 'em.)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 2 May 2003 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

My own, Harlem Heat. Cuz we'd blow shit up, metaphorically (I could also use the financial windfall). If not us, then Ween. Cuz I'd like to see canonists work THAT one out.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 2 May 2003 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Delgados:

1) They are great
2) if they were to ever do TOTP, they would quite blatantly get utterly w'nkud and kick the smidge out of Busted. Possibly. Though they may well be too busy getting even more w'nkud than they already were to actually get round to the second bit.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 2 May 2003 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Sufjan Stevens.

Sasha Frere-Jones (Sasha Frere-Jones), Friday, 2 May 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, I was gonna say Mclusky.

Ferg (Ferg), Friday, 2 May 2003 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

This guy I just heard named Justin Timberlake. He used to have something to do with Disney, but hasn't really done much since then. He needs a boost right now.

The Eternals. I'd pay to see Tim Kinsella on TRL. Lungfish.

J.R. Nelson, Friday, 2 May 2003 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The BellRays. We are in the midst of SUPAR GARRIDGE-ROK EXPLOZHUN times and they're not being slobbered over Yeah^3s style? The hell?

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 3 May 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The Kiss Offs.

But they've already broken up, so that doesn't work.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Saturday, 3 May 2003 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

99% of the bands I've seen listed I've never heard of - so if ppl are going to argue for promoting 'em to the heights, could I get a reason why?

H (Heruy), Saturday, 3 May 2003 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Because the BellRays are, to use the much-reviled-by-the-band yet most readily descriptive term, "Tina Turner fronting the MC5".

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 3 May 2003 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Someone promote our band! We're great!

Johnney B (Johnney B), Saturday, 3 May 2003 08:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Bellrays got their hype three years too soon.

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 3 May 2003 09:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Imani Coppola

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 3 May 2003 09:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree with the Mountain Goats and McLusky, but still I'm going for Serafin.

zilverberg.tk (zilverberg.tk), Saturday, 3 May 2003 09:15 (twenty-two years ago)

An all-girl band from Canberra called The Baby Shakers.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Saturday, 3 May 2003 09:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave Longstreth - though I should probably let him get his Bachelor's before promoting him.

kieran, Saturday, 3 May 2003 09:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Buttch, they actually started in Michigan. (I went to school with 'em.)

that's odd. I knew some people at my college who formed a band called North Atlantic.

buttch (Oops), Saturday, 3 May 2003 09:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Russian Futurists seconded.

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 3 May 2003 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I second Max Tundra and add Komeda.

Momus (Momus), Saturday, 3 May 2003 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Blonde Redhead.

Because popular music would be vastly improved if everyone started ripping them off.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Saturday, 3 May 2003 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

REVIVE

The Blood Brothers. The idea of them playing stadium shows and doing MTV Unplugged gigs is just too delicious.

Mclusky fifth'd or six'd or whatever.

Simon H., Thursday, 8 January 2004 04:25 (twenty-one years ago)

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 8 January 2004 04:43 (twenty-one years ago)

The Raincoats, obviously. Oh yeah, and The Slits.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 8 January 2004 04:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I second Blonde redhead

Jole, Thursday, 8 January 2004 05:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Merzbow!!!

A Nairn (moretap), Thursday, 8 January 2004 05:22 (twenty-one years ago)

The Reigning Sound so Cartwright and Co. wouldn't be calling it quits. Quitters.

Will (will), Thursday, 8 January 2004 05:24 (twenty-one years ago)

The Mendoza Line
and
Tower Recordings

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 8 January 2004 05:32 (twenty-one years ago)

OLNEYVILLE SOUND SYSTEM. Best band EVER from Providence. Consistent weird brilliance.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 8 January 2004 05:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I want Mclusky too but since you guys already called it I'll take Giddy Motors.

Shaun (shaun), Thursday, 8 January 2004 06:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I could see McClusky on TRL. That would be great. And kinda scary.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 8 January 2004 07:16 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm going to be repeating myself here but, Marmoset.

everyone should really be loving Marmoset.

metfigga (metfigga), Thursday, 8 January 2004 07:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Run For Cover Lovers. The urgency and passion of the Modern Lovers with the atonal glee of Orange Juice.

Canada Briggs (Canada Briggs), Thursday, 8 January 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

oops "Kids, sadly the Lovers are calling it quits due to ongoing bouts with alcohol, drug and compost abuse". In which case, Melbourne's New Estate for global dominance this year.

Canada Briggs (Canada Briggs), Thursday, 8 January 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I was gonna say McLusky.

British Sea Power - they should fill the hole Pulp left behind. Headlining festivals within three years please.

Chris Jones (Crackity Jones), Thursday, 8 January 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

They've been around a long time but I've ofen felt that St. Etienne should be as big as The Bealtes in an alternative universe.

LondonLee (LondonLee), Thursday, 8 January 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Criminally overlooked Europop - Alizée and Lene Nystrom in particular. Also Kasia Klich, a Polish jazz-R&B singer who made one of my favourite songs of last year, and Lina, the American jazz-R&B chanteuse she ripped off.

Diamanda Galás. The day I see her on TOTP scaring the shit out of the world, my work will be done.

Black Box Recorder - well duh.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 8 January 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

film school
thee more shallows
bitesize

a few bands from the bay area that deserve a wider audience.

metfigga (metfigga), Thursday, 8 January 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

bitesize is awesome! are they still around?

metfigga do you remember galaga?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 8 January 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

i wasn't there but bitesize played the stork club on 12/12 so i'm assuming they're still standing. from what i understood though, the vocals are a bit different now, as a result of the hormones and what not.

i'm not familiar with galaga (outside of having the seventh highest score for at least two weeks at my local video arcade on transit road in suburban buffalo in 1983).

metfigga (metfigga), Thursday, 8 January 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

dead C: so they would be virtually forced to play here.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 8 January 2004 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

wow, that's cool. i saw them play a warehouse in Oakland with (ILM poster) Shakey Mo Collier's band a year or so ago and then I heard about the transformation of the lead person. i'd seen them a few times.

galaga was a local 3 piece band that i saw once and amazed me (a more psych version of bitesize) but the 2 brothers moved back to thailand in the late 90s. i always thought they'd have made a good bill.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 8 January 2004 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Czars

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 8 January 2004 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

yay for Silkworm! I second the nomination.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 8 January 2004 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

blonde redhead's time is coming. especially if this next album makes the same leap forward they made on the last one.

(Jon L), Thursday, 8 January 2004 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i second the merzbow vote. i'd love to see the american public react to him becoming famous. I wonder if he'd get as many protestors as Marilyn Manson. He's not as visually spectacular, but he's certainly much more of a danger to the children.

Felcher (Felcher), Thursday, 8 January 2004 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Or maybe Coil.

Felcher (Felcher), Thursday, 8 January 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Puddle Of Mudd

Woo!

Czars

Also woo!

Besides my answers above, the Raunchy Young Lepers. Of course.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 9 January 2004 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

How did I read that so wrong?? Lets try Mastodon - young dumb metal kids need to hear these guys.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Friday, 9 January 2004 01:21 (twenty-one years ago)

.... and Puddle of Mudd

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Friday, 9 January 2004 01:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Mastodon because without knowing anything about them I just think bumbumWHOMaraararagh.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 9 January 2004 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Thats so close its scary. Check the chorus' of the first three tunes on "Remission"

bumbumWHOMararaj and so on.....

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Friday, 9 January 2004 01:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Woo! I'm happy!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 9 January 2004 01:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Ween

Mister Snrub (MisterSnrub), Friday, 9 January 2004 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Mastodon are epic huge mess of fun. Similar to Isis, who also deserve widespread fame.

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 9 January 2004 01:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Definately the Fuckemos! We need to hear "Putrid Human Waste" on the radio more often, IMHO.

Sorry to be a homer, but Czars are worthy.
