CD-R Abuse

Hey people, is it my imagination or does playing music CD-R's on my stereo fuck it up? I swear my CD machine never jumped until I started playing CDs that I've burned on it. Now it seems to be getting ever more unreliable. Anyone heard anything about this, or am I getting techno-paranoia once again???

Hmmmm... CD players have lasers.

Talk me through it. I'm a bit slow with technical stuff.

Eeet eees ze Konspiracy!
No...
Actually, I suggest getting a laser cleaning gadget (Radio Shack: $12.99) and maybe later a CD cleaning gadget (Radio Shack: $5.99)
Clean optics make more difference than most people think. Especially when it comes to burning CDs.

Are you supposed to use those lens-cleaning CDs (the ones with the 4 or 5 little bristles on the bottom) with CDR drives? Would a shot or two of compressed air from a can be safer with them?

lyra (lyra), Saturday, 3 May 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, they're perfectly safe for CD-R/RW drives (In fact, I suspect thats why they were invented.) But lyra is right about the compressed air. That helps too. In fact use both.

I was warned off using lens cleaners years ago (and have never needed one) on the grounds that running bristles across the surface of a finely polished lens which isn't supposed to come into contact with anything (unlike a tape head) is just asking for trouble. Compressed air would be my choice.

cheaply made cds will shed bits when they're first played, so you probably do just have a dusty laser.
