kieran, Saturday, 3 May 2003 09:11 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
Am reading the excellent 'Truth and Beauty' at the moment so thought I'd revive this. Note the shocking lack of any 'Different Class'-era material:

Sheffield: Sex City
His 'N' Hers
Joyriders
Acrylic Afternoons
Pink Glove
This Is Hardcore
Seductive Barry
We Are The Boys
Cocaine Socialism
Like A Friend

No-one else would include 'Seductive Barry', but at the Bournemouth leg of the post-'This Is Hardcore' tour I remember Jarvis Cocker strapping some kind of noise-box around his middle and triggering samples during the song SOLELY BY THRUSTING HIS CROTCH ABOUT in time to the music. Hence, I love this song.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 03:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Gotta add "Truth and Beauty" to the reading list. Thanks, I didn't even know about it until now.

Pink Glove
Glory Days
Little Girl With Blue Eyes
I Want You
Birds In Your Garden
Disco 2000
Your Sisters Clothes
She's a Lady
This is Hardcore
Happy Endings

Not fair. I could name another thirty.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 06:10 (twenty-one years ago)

'Babies' & 'Sorted for E's & Wizz' are ultimate, the rest can revolve around depending on my moods.

hey, Seductive Barry was in my POX upthread! although since then I finally got His'n'Hers, so I'd probably switch out a couple for Acrylic Afternoons and Babies.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 11:22 (twenty-one years ago)

No-one else would include 'Seductive Barry'

OH YOU WOULD BE SO WRONG. It sounds like Shriekback (before they went batshit bad) = IT IS FANTASTIC.

David B, Wednesday, 23 June 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

eleven months pass...
Trying to do a CD80 of Pulp 'epics'. You know, the (usually) long ones that are often slowish and where it's mostly just Jarvis talking. Here's my list so far, am I missing anything?

My Legendary Girlfriend
Space
Sheffield: Sex City
Inside Susan
David's Last Summer
Feeling Called Love
Deep Fried in Kelvin
Seductive Barry
Weeds II (Origin of The Species)
Wickerman

still have enough room for one and maybe two more.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

I Spy!

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

That's my favorite Pulp song, but it's more "song" if you follow me.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

I don't see how "I Spy" is more "song" than "Wickerman" ...

What about "Being Followed Home"?
"Acrylic Afternoons" might be stretching it, and it's not really an epic (except when played live).

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

"I Spy" is just so focused. Epic yes. Maybe I'm just looking for things that are more rambling.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

Spencer, you forgot "Street Lites". (b-side of "Do You Remember the First Time)

D. Bachyrycz, Tuesday, 14 June 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

Maybe "The Professional" as well. Backing track wise it's not exactly epic (it cries out for a proper string arrangement), but it certainly should fill your "longish and rambling" criterion.

D. Bachyrycz, Tuesday, 14 June 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, that one is very drastically song then not-song. I may add it and "I Spy" after all...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

xpost, the rap on that one has always kind of put me off. But I will listen to it again...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for the tips guys!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

10.Help The Aged

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

Definately have to add on "Street Lites", Spencer! I've always thought of "My Legendary Girlfriend", "Sheffield: Sex City", and "Street Lites" as some kind of trilogy.

And getting away from largely spoken word epics for the moment, am I the only one who thinks it's crazy that "Live On" was never given a proper release?

D. Bachyrycz, Tuesday, 14 June 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

I am definitely adding "Street Lites." I think the reason I don't want to add "I Spy" because I listen to it so much already on my 'portable' hits disc. I actually listen to it a lot before going out, which is probably a little sick.
