"Silver Springs" (F Mac) C/D?

This is one of my favorite pop/rock songs of all time, but I really have no feel at all of how much or how little it's appreciated by the mainstream... incredible to think it was left off Rumors!

Do you rate this song among Fleetwood Mac's best, and does anyone agree with me that it's a TIMELESS KLASSICK??

give me just a chance!

Silver Spring, MD is classic.

adam (adam), Saturday, 3 May 2003 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic. I don't know if I like it quite that much, but I was really happy when this one new station was starting and they auto-looped 12 songs for days and this was one of them.

jbr, this came up on my Winamp, and I was just thinking I can't believe how much these folks operate on another level. Such a command of pop form yet infusing it with lyrical depth, simple yet fantastic muso-ship (mac-fleetwood). I mean it seems effortless yet of course it's not, they go to #1 on the pop charts yet take you places the psych bands could. They're the tops.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 31 May 2003 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

holy yet

one year passes...
G'damn. The studio version is great.....but the version they did on The Dance -- jeez-us keerist.

Amazing.

PB, Saturday, 26 March 2005 05:57 (twenty years ago)

yeah that version gives me chills. Stevie's dug deep for that one, and her latter-day croak lends the song a majesty it didn't have.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Saturday, 26 March 2005 06:15 (twenty years ago)

The only Fleetwood Mac song i like, and i like it a lot.

dmun, Saturday, 26 March 2005 11:26 (twenty years ago)

Both versions rock, but the live version on "The Dance" is transcendent. Christine's harmonies will give the Christine haters pause.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Saturday, 26 March 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

I'm sure it was staged, but did anyone think Lindsey and Stevie were singing "Silver Springs" to each other in the videotaped concert for The Dance? I thought they were either about to stop the song and hug each other or throw down their mics and go to blows.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 26 March 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

First heard it, oddly enough, via a friend's (quite excellent) karaoke of it two years back. Extremely moving and gave me some cause to reflect on past follies of mine. (See, sometimes lyrics CAN work for me. ;-))

Ned logged out (maura), Saturday, 26 March 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

Alfred's right. I just d/l'ed the live version and Christine's vocal makes the chorus.

Do Christine-haters exist? That is disturbing.

collardio gelatinous, Friday, 14 June 2013 02:09 (twelve years ago)

and yes, TIMELESS CLASSICK. this one gets in your marrow. (never get away!).

collardio gelatinous, Friday, 14 June 2013 02:12 (twelve years ago)

Silver Spring, MD is classic.

i grew up in ss, was so psyched when this came out

always funny how she came up with the song cos she thought the place sounded so beautiful
(not having been there)
(...obvi)

still so good tho

fauxmarc, Friday, 14 June 2013 02:45 (twelve years ago)

silver spring used to be beautiful. now there is a red lobster.

and yeah this song rules forever

adam, Friday, 14 June 2013 02:47 (twelve years ago)

(in the anti-christine camp but that's neither here nor there, yeah can't disagree with the chorus tho)

fauxmarc, Friday, 14 June 2013 02:49 (twelve years ago)

always funny how she came up with the song cos she thought the place sounded so beautiful

this reminds me of how, at the end of one of their recent shows in nyc, she told the audience that ny was one of her very favorite places to visit, because it's so alive "and sparkly". delivered in that staccato speaking voice of hers, full of post-encore rasp, it sounded at that moment like the sweetest, most wide-eyed thing i'd ever heard.

collardio gelatinous, Friday, 14 June 2013 03:09 (twelve years ago)

six years pass...

wat is the best version of this song?

my god, the version from "the dance" how do you beat that?

but I have a feeling there are better springs out there than the remasters

and is this the best song

i will FP you and your entire family (rip van wanko), Saturday, 6 June 2020 17:23 (five years ago)

ha I felt like a nerd repping for the version they did on tour when they were already old and was filmed for vh1, but I see it gets a lot of love itt

The Dance gets some shit, but Nicks is in top vocal form on the SS version.

god damn, this song

alpine static, Friday, 7 February 2025 20:37 (ten months ago)

so what is the *real* story behind why this wasn't on Rumors? i'd assume there is an official story and then what really happened (i.e. two dudes silencing a woman), but maybe not.

alpine static, Friday, 7 February 2025 20:43 (ten months ago)

Mick Fleetwood contended that it was too long and would compromise the sonic quality of the LP side. They did replace it with another, shorter, Nicks song, though.

Halfway there but for you, Friday, 7 February 2025 20:46 (ten months ago)

Right ... well, that's a blunder that should follow him to his grave.

Wikipedia says he wouldn't let her put it on her greatest hits many years later because he wanted to include it in some Mac project. Dipshit!

alpine static, Friday, 7 February 2025 21:10 (ten months ago)

Making it a B-side to "Go Your Own Way" is sort of poetic, I guess. Still...

alpine static, Friday, 7 February 2025 21:11 (ten months ago)

C for song. D for making 80% of people who reference the city as "Silver Springs".
