just so you know. before that it was Sean Paul all day and all night. Philly's got worldbeat fever!! I want more of it. Luckily, Jay-Z's Brasilian beat is moving up fast on the inside. Now if I could just get the Boredoms to collaborate with Killer Mike...

Fuckyeah! can we also add 50's P.I.M.P. to the list or is the latin tip too "done"?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Saturday, 3 May 2003 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

H (Heruy), Saturday, 3 May 2003 03:07 (twenty-two years ago)

minna (minna), Saturday, 3 May 2003 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

no not south st. but center city. people got some serious rim action going on outside. wheels twirling everywhere. I haven't heard the jay-z rap yet. i've only seen the video that doesn't have him in it. I gotta hear it. I'll have to download it. I love bhangra. I used to buy the cheap tapes they sold at the Indian stores in West Philly. They had the greatest stuff and they were always like 2 or 3 bucks. Rap-wise, i really did love Timbaland's "Indian Carpet".I like the back and forth. rap in Indian music and vice versa. They are just such great sounds together. The mixture of beats sounds like heaven to me.

minna (minna), Saturday, 3 May 2003 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

bhangra is at no. 40 and dancehall at no. 1 on the u.s. charts this week -- it's going to be a hell of a good summer!

i've heard this blasting out of cars driving down the main street of my little (pop. 5,000) town. apparently it's a hit.

i heard it blasting out of some a car going down the main street in my little (5,000 people) new jersey town last week. it's a hit!

wah? stupid refresh button.

your null fame (yournullfame), Saturday, 3 May 2003 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

it's the influence of rockist scientist, i tell yas!

(it would be really cool if philly is becoming sub rosa a hotbed of indian/panjabi music.)

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 3 May 2003 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I got subliminals all over this city.

(Actually I don't listen to any Punjabi music to speak of.)

I heard a rapg with a great looped sample of what sounded like it might be Indian, but I don't think it was new.

But me, I was at a dance studio, dancing to salsa. About twice as many men as women, but I knew one of the women well, and knew another one a little bit, so I got to dance a bit.

The DJ tonight mixed some Los Orishas in with a salsa song, making my partner and I go into some funky freestyle stuff. I hope it looked as good as it felt while I was dancing, but if it didn't, hey, get up and do your own dancing.

a lot of radio stations are playing a version with only one Jay verse, because his second verse contains anti-war sentiments.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 3 May 2003 06:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I think that was supposed to be "rap song" but "rapg" is so much better.

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 3 May 2003 06:32 (twenty-two years ago)

One word: Mexico.

Momus (Momus), Saturday, 3 May 2003 07:42 (twenty-two years ago)

interestingly enough, it's charting very high (3rd top selling single, when last i checked) here in s. africa. already a staple at clubs.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Saturday, 3 May 2003 08:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not sure what Momus means by "Mexico," but I think he's probably right. One of these days I will get around to invesigating its music a little more, if nothing else.

Ha! If that's for real, then Jay-Z continues to make me not hate him. I want to see him on the O'Reilly Factor now. I've only heard the "Silence him, he's with the terrorists" one-verse version so far, but it's fucking great. Knight Rider Bhangra!

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 3 May 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Rockist, in case you haven't heard it, and to stay completely and utterly on-topic, check out El Gran Silencio's Super Riddim International Vol.1-just your run-of-the-mill mexican folk and pop mixed with dancehall, hip hop beats, Indian rhythms and a smattering of techno and Brasilian sounds for good measure. You haven't lived till you've heard "Cumbiamuffin".

scott seward, Saturday, 3 May 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, and there is a great punk song on it as well. forgot that one.

scott seward, Saturday, 3 May 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard both Jay Z verses last night on one of the clearchannel stations here.

Kris (aqueduct), Saturday, 3 May 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)
