Metallica's San Quentin gig?

Am I the only one that thinks time and money could be spent on better causes? Better publicity stunts?

I suppose it's mainly a personal thing for the (formerly) angry guy in the band, as he relates to the inmates... but what do I know. I never get mad, so maybe I don't have the urge to reward people for doing bad things and am just wallowing in my own poor morale.

The fact that there are people that take Metallica seriously is annoying. I had not heard of this gig but I doubt it can be any more annoying than the orchestations of their horrible songs.

Roman (Roman), Saturday, 3 May 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

let's remember that there was a time when they were one of best f***in' bands in the world, however far they've fallen

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Saturday, 3 May 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a pretty good memory but do not remember that.

Roman (Roman), Saturday, 3 May 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Roman's statement - "The fact that there are people that take Metallica seriously is annoying" - pretty much sums it up. Seconded.

maria b (maria b), Saturday, 3 May 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

let's remember that there was a time where they didn't suck as much as they do now.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 3 May 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Well said, Mr. Miccio.

Roman (Roman), Saturday, 3 May 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Haytaz! Haytaz! when "kill 'em all" was mainly circulating as a dubbed tape in adolescent psych care facilities across the U.S., there was only one band better than Metallica, and that was N.W.A.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Saturday, 3 May 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, put in that perspective. Are you related to the Duplex Planet guy?

Roman (Roman), Saturday, 3 May 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

(no: I work in psychiatric care & have for the better part of fifteen years)

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Saturday, 3 May 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Tough, tough job. I used to help out at a half way house for patients with psychiatric problems that were under control with meds.

Roman (Roman), Saturday, 3 May 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

"let's remember that there was a time where they didn't suck as much as they do now."

I can't recall such a time. Sorry. Maybe VH1's Behind the Muzak ruined them for me.

maria b (maria b), Saturday, 3 May 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Remeber when the only Metallica song you knew was "Master of Puppets" and you thought they were classic because of that? Then, you started hearing more of their stuff and started looking at your peers who listened to them and realized that if you ever became a real fan of theirs you were increasing your chances of getting lynched exponentially?

Welcome to my world.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 4 May 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

they were probably at their coolest around Master Of Puppets, but - and call me a sell-out MTV slut, which I somewhat may well be - I think I like more songs off Load ("Ain't My Bitch," "Until It Sleeps," "Hero Of The Day," "King Nothing") more than from any earlier album. Even if it's horrifically overlong.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 4 May 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Imagine this: You get bused for 35,000 counts of criminal copyright infringement, because your a Current93 fan who designed share software for mp3 downloading. Your in prison...for like three years. You have gotten used to the shit food, the brutal guards, the mind numbing boredom and being your cellmate's girlfriend(if all that is possible). Suddenly you are lead away from your cell into a lunch room with 799 felons (all of them MUCH better at weightlifting than you, you scrawny, poncy white boy), and then music industry corporate whores/RIAA poster bastards Metallica start playing!!!! Could it get worse? Someone should call Amnesty International on them for inhuman punishment.

Brandon Welch (Brandon Welch), Sunday, 4 May 2003 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan, how does one get lynched exponentially?

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Sunday, 4 May 2003 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Brandon, that was...dare I say...

BEAUTIFUL

BurmaKitty (BurmaKitty), Sunday, 4 May 2003 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Load was one of the best albums..
the early ones were ok too.

JP Albin (John Paul Albin), Monday, 5 May 2003 03:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Maytallica!

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Monday, 5 May 2003 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks BK, I call em like I see em.

Brandon Welch (Brandon Welch), Monday, 5 May 2003 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

J0hn, I misspoke; I meant asymptotically.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 5 May 2003 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I read an interview a few months back with Jason Newstead that summed up how Metallica had changed over the years, that money was a big issue as the band now had 90 employees.

Unless they are like the Dead and have their own full time self hired road crew, most are contracted, I cannot see why a rock band would need 90 employees. That is a good chunk of payroll, if it is true.

earlnash, Monday, 5 May 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought being annoyed by Metallica was a full-time gig?

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 5 May 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Doesn't pay well, though.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 5 May 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

That's why I freelance.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Monday, 5 May 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

But what of the benefits?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 5 May 2003 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Witnessing Lars resemble Gollum more and more each passing day? It's kind of amusing, I guess that could be considered a benefit.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 5 May 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't being right enough of a benefit?

Nick A. (Nick A.), Monday, 5 May 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Nicole, that's so mean! You should apologize to Gollum immediately.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 5 May 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Nicole's point is sound, but I don't want to imagine a mostly nude Lars roiling around in the mud chasing after a fish, thanks.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 5 May 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

J0hn, I misspoke; I meant asymptotically

Dan, I love you.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 5 May 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

roxymuzak, Friday, 13 June 2008 07:03 (seventeen years ago)

Lara should go live in a cave and not bother anybody

calstars, Saturday, 24 April 2021 17:02 (four years ago)

They should go for maximum trollage and auction a digitally signed Napster executable as NFT.
