CD purge criteria

Okay. So I've got a few thousand more CDs than I need, strictly speaking; the question is how to weed out the keepers from the ditchers. This is the thread where you recommend questions I should ask myself about each CD to decide whether or not to keep it.

1. Do I enjoy it?

2. Am I likely to ever listen to it again?

3. If I ditch it how easy will it be to get a replacement if I later change my mind.

Those are the big three. But also:

4. Do I need to hold on to this purely for archival purposes (i.e. out of print and never likely to be issued again)?

5. Will Ned take it if I do sell it? (Answer: maybe)

6. Will Scott take it if I just give it to him? (Answer:yes!)

Doing this myself, basically if it's give it a 5 or less I'm getting rid of it (except, so far, Rod Stewart's "Blondes Have More Fun"). If that's not enough, then I'm getting rid of the 6's. Of course, I'm taping any songs I simply cannot do without. I wish I had a CD-burner, which would make this easier.

though the way I'm doing it (one album a day) will probably take me three to four years to complete. Actually, I'm doing it this way as fodder for my website and to reaffirm that there's nothing in my collection that I'm CLUELESS about. There's stuff I've probably listened to half of once.

7. Is it in good condition? Unless it's an irredeemable CD with less than, say, three decent-ish songs, a scuffed CD probably isn't even worth trying to sell; the most you'll get for it is $2. (Then again, if you have a couple hundred scuffed CDs...)

you wanna buy those shitty Built to Spill, Wilco, and Fountains of Wayne CDs i bought 4 years ago?

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 3 May 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Let me reemphasize the word 'maybe.'

I might. Anyone selling indie MOR, email me! I love that stuff. (Which Wilco record[s]?)

Seriously though... I can't find the thread, but I'm completely bonkers for an ILM thread that coordinates ILM'ers selling music. I'd much prefer to find things through here than through eBay, and I imagine sellers feel much the same way. List things you want to get rid of!

What do used CD stores pay? I figured less than a $1 for most CDs, which doesn't make it worth me selling 50 or 60 (I'll work an extra morning shift).

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 4 May 2003 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

My criteria: does the cover art/liner notes/consumer fetish value make it worth the money to keep?

I ask that question because I can make a quick CDR of any CD I sell so I won't lose track of the music per se. With more and more of my collection the answer is "no."

amateurist (amateurist), Sunday, 4 May 2003 03:01 (twenty-two years ago)

there are many many records I wish I hadn't sold. at times it seems like more than half of the things I was absolutely sure I'd never have the urge to listen to again, well, big surprise, the urge comes out of nowhere and I'm kicking myself...

I must say the matter was settled for me about two years ago with the rise of mp3's, it makes things much easier to let go of something and put in the sell pile. Because the urge to listen rises again, but merely listening once is enough.

jleideck, Sunday, 4 May 2003 03:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't sold any unwanted CDs for a long time, but I remember getting at least $4 a pop for them when I did.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Sunday, 4 May 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I only ask myself one question about each CD I'm gonna get rid of. Does it suck?

Occasionally I might ask "Will I ever feel like listening to it again?", but overall that one question has done me just fine. I dump lots of stuff and never regret any of it. My trade-in pile at the moment is about 30 CDs high and 15 LPs high.
