two years pass...
really enjoying the one disc that I have.

kyle gann, anyone?

also what do ppl here think about attempts to translate nancarrow's music to ensemble (I'm thinking it would sound like a far more busy, speed-up versh of steve reich?) - kyle ans this q on his blog - there is a rec with ensemble modern where this is attempted.

there's a disc on naxos disc of str quartets - obv the player piano stuff is where its at but is it worth it?

the ensemble modern disc -- they play the sparser pieces, and at a slower tempo. they sound great slow, amazing to hear the lines performed with inflection instead of as pure data overload -- he wrote some incredible, expressive melodies that go by way too quickly sometimes, the EM disc was the first time I actually got to perceive many of the lines -- though I hear them now as well on the Nancarrow versions

so I'm interested if anyone has good things to say about any of the other human recordings.

one thing I really wish would come out again: the original columbia recording of the Nancarrow set (which is represented by volume three of the Wergo / 1750 Arch set). Nancarrow didn't like the close miking and sharp attacks on the piano they used, but I think it sounds fantastic.

I wasn't aware that Vol. 3 of the Wergo set was similar / same to the Columbia LP!

you know i haven't listened to nancarrow in AGES!!! he is the best tho. i was never sure if i liked that ensemble modern disc of interpretations - i always like the autistic didactive mechanicitry of the rolls & the joannas. proper musicians playing it classical style kinda stunted the diy appeal for me

I definitely prefer listening to the originals as well, but I enjoyed them even more after hearing the EM disc (which I never bought for myself -- it was a loaner & I was fine with listening once)

xpost the Wergo CD adds two extra tracks at the end but otherwise the track sequence is identical to the Columbia LP
