How reissues suck!

Tomorrow they are reissues the first three Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark albums in the US and the have bonus tracks. I already have all these cds, and I have many of the bonus tracks already on the Navigations: B sides cd, but there are a few I don't have. DO I have to go and buy all these cds again. That sucks. (I liked what teh Beatles did with the Past Masters collection that put all the songs you wouldn't have in one collection.)

With all respect, talking as someone who probably would buy the albums again (replace OMD with whatever band I've decided I'm obsessed with), the question comes down to Do You Need The Extra Tracks That Badly..

YES!!!!

A Nairn (moretap), Monday, 5 May 2003 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I was sorta pondering this question myself, and much as I love OMD, I have the albums, I have the Navigation comp, I'm fine for now -- though admittedly my copy of Architecture and Morality is almost twenty years old now. Still plays fine, though, CDs really are durable!

What I do when a new reissue with bonus tracks comes out: search for the bonus tracks on filesharing.

T. Weiss (Timmy), Monday, 5 May 2003 11:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Does anyone got hold of any of those reissues? Is the remastered sound a improvement? I never got the chance to buy the first OMD albums, so I guess now would be a nice opportunity...

Speaking of bonus-track-laden reissues from bands with long names beginning with O and reducible to TLAs, reissues of both OTC albums should be out soon on Cloud (don't know if there's an official release date).

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Monday, 5 May 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

In the case of OMD, those original CDs were released very early, and 15 years after their original release, remastering technology has gotten advanced enough to justify new remasters.

I am still waiting for The Beatles' entire output to be remastered, 15 years on.

When the Byrds stuff was remastered on CD with extra tracks I burnt copies of them from a friend. having bought them all on vinyl and CD already this seemed pretty justified.

And the irony is the new booklets have loads of photos and graphics and the old ones don't so i still want them. Grrrr.

There's nothing more annoying.... why can't record companies operate a discount scheme whereby you take your shitty old copy in and get a few quid off the new edition?

It stinks.....

russ t, Tuesday, 6 May 2003 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

paul, if you're looking for the first two Olivia Tremor Control albums ("Dusk" and "Black Foliage"), i'm looking to get rid of them. both are double lps

JasonD (JasonD), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Got 'em both, thanks. The reissues will have extra stuff, but I'll probably be content with what I've got.

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 04:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Another thing, have you noticed how a "classic" album appearing a lot in discount bins probably means there will be a new remastered edition coming up soon?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 09:01 (twenty-two years ago)

EMI are doing the same with all the Kate Bush back catalogue.... like they did with Hounds of Love a few years ago.
Some of the old EMI CDs are sounding ropey as hell now (loads of scratches and crackles) , so about time.

russ t, Wednesday, 7 May 2003 09:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Can I take this opportunity to say how much I FUCKING DETEST those "LP replica" sleeves that Virgin rolls out with the initial pressings of their remastered titles? It's especially annoying how they plague the bins in the US shops a couple months after they've been out in the UK. I've had to go through Amazon UK more than once to get the jewel case versions -- and even they once took the liberty of sending me an LP sleeve 'cause, you know, they must've thought I was crazy for wanting the unlimited version.

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 11:02 (twenty-two years ago)

...and the cardboard sleeves of these reissues take no time at all to look tatty and dogeared in your collection, too.Plus the plastic CD holder usually comes unstuck from the cover. Nasty.

russ t, Wednesday, 7 May 2003 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Good point about the Virgin sleeves, but I wouldn't mind so much if they actually DID do a replica sleeve for the first OMD album, grid and holes and removeable inner sleeve please! I'm keeping my original LP of it just for the lovely cover.

EMI are doing the same with all the Kate Bush back catalogue....

EMI, however, should stop releasing CDs at all until they start releasing them as actual CDs again, not those bastard so-called "copy-protected" bastard thingys they have been releasing instead of CDs lately.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The first two Guadalcanal Diary albums are being re-issued on CD, and I don't mind.

zilverberg.tk (zilverberg.tk), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow....I'm dying to hear "Watusi Rodeo" right now, dammit!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

And the Jamboree bootleg black market cries.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 8 May 2003 04:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm actually glad I held off on the OMD purchasing 'till now.
