Soulwax Presents Hang All DJ's - Volume 1

Brand new, it seems. Released by "Head Traxx Inc." whoever they are. Way more expert, and way trashier than the *Hang the DJ* 4 and 5 volumes.

Any more info? I'll post the tracklisting when I get off work tonight.

steve miller revival starts here...

scott pl. (scott pl.), Monday, 5 May 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

nah, the miller revival started with the jacques lu cont fabric 09 mix

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 5 May 2003 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

the miller revival started with disco (not disco) back in '00

like a fool, i will probably buy this or spend hours downloading it

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 5 May 2003 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, Steve Miller has been played in steppers' clubs in Chicago for years.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 5 May 2003 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

(also the same track on Disco (Not Disco) was on The Loft, which I think was released earlier)

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 5 May 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know... lots of cool track selections there, but I think these guys are running out of gas. 4 and 5 were underwhelming, they seemed a bit random.

Ben Williams, Monday, 5 May 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I would like to hear the Reel 2 Reel/Bros segue tho...

Ben Williams, Monday, 5 May 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, i've barely listened to 4 and 5 since downloading them...i found they make for pretty decent background music when you have people over, but otherwise...eh. there's plenty of good tracks on this one, but i'd probably rather just listen to a mix i could make of the ones i like, au natural.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 5 May 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

looks fun, and I'll be v. v. glad if it's better than Radio Soulwax 4 & 5 (zzzzz), but I'll give a dollar to anyone who can stop this or any Steve Miller revival

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 5 May 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i like the sound of it, i enjoyed parts 4 & 5 as well - great to listen and dance to...still anything THEY can do i can do...almost as good as...

stevem (blueski), Monday, 5 May 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

steve miller rules.

david day (winslow), Monday, 5 May 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Which is unfortunate.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 5 May 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

does anyone have 4 or 5, I really liked the tracklists if I recall correctly. I wouldn't mind a copy if so.

That list looks good, that Felix track is a great one. lots of other good stuff.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 5 May 2003 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Can we scientifically determine why I think Soulwax mixes are complete Duds, while Avalanches mixes are holy and pristine perfection? Actually, it's probably because I'm corny and sentimental. Anyone else feel the same?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 5 May 2003 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Steve Miller is classic for Space Cowboy (search twice!) or Living in the USA (search!!) or Abracadabra (search!!) or Fly Like an Eagle (search!!!) alone! Holy Apollo on wheels!! Do you people hate America or apple pie or s'thing? Why don't you just diss ZZ Top and my mom while you're at it? No self-respecting DJ would fail to put at least one Steve Miller song on their Shootin' Car mix.

Andy K (Andy K), Monday, 5 May 2003 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

"Somebody get me a cheeseburger!"

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 5 May 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

..which is a perfect segue into Gang of Four!

Andy K (Andy K), Monday, 5 May 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought the biz started the steve miller revival.

s>c>, Monday, 5 May 2003 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

...and they're DJing in Amsterdam this Thursday! (with Arthur Baker and Erol Alkan...)

JoB (JoB), Monday, 5 May 2003 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

The "Steve Miller is a genius" thread began exactly right here:

Biz Markie "Nobody Beats The Biz" (1987)

and was updated most recently here:

Sheryl Crow "Steve McQueen" (2002)

Survey says: Triangulated by The Biz & Sheryl Crow = genius.

Sasha Frere-Jones (Sasha Frere-Jones), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

"Can we scientifically determine why I think Soulwax mixes are complete Duds, while Avalanches mixes are holy and pristine perfection? Actually, it's probably because I'm corny and sentimental. Anyone else feel the same?"

I think there is a greater emotive content to the Avalanches' mixes - which is why their not-so-seamless mixes are better than 2 Many DJs' not-so-seamless mixes. But "As Heard on Radio Soulwax Pt. 2" is seamless (or close enough to it anyway), and maybe the best party album ever ever ever. It seems to be something of an inspired one-off though, and I prefer the Avalanches "At Home" mixes over any of the other 2 Many DJs ones I've heard.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

unlike the Dewaeles, the Avalanches (at least Dexter) are actually PROPER DJs who scratch and mix, and only partly relied on pre-mixed sequences in their sets from what i heard, thus more spontaneity and wtf moments - what Soulwax do is more calculated and collected but i do enjoy their mixes as well

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

The Avalanches mixes also make me tingle, while the Soulwax stuff does nothing for me. I think the Avalanches disappear into their mixes to a greater extent, there is a lot less "look! we're so clever!" nonsense, and they also seem to love the music they play more than the soulwaxers, who sometimes strike me as putting stuff in there either 'cos it fits or to make a striking juxtaposition, often with the consequence that it seems like they don't necessarily like what they are playing. The Avalanches mixes seem to bring out hidden connections rather than force new, uncomfortable ones. If that makes any sense.

Conor (Conor), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Triangulated by The Biz & Sheryl Crow = genius.

That's more a case of matter and antimatter coming together and creating tachyons.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

science prevails! thanks guys.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 06:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Anybody up for a Jive Bunny revival?

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 09:39 (twenty-two years ago)

anybody up for a two year old joke revival?

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Another reason The Avalanches are superior to Soulwax are the frequent narrative links in their mixes. "Since I Left You"(the album) has a concept of travel, as did the hour-long mix they did for Radio One; eg:
Crosby Stills & Nash "Just A Song" into Beach Boys "Trader" into Van Dyke Parks "Sweet Trinidad"; with Avalanches "Little Journey" cropping up from time to time in the mix.
Oh, and Dexter was criticizing Soulwax "2 Many DJs" in Mixmag (I think) recently for similar reasons Stevem & Conor gave.

tacit (tacit), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

"Narrative links" = lame mixtape 'concepts' NO THANKS! The Avalanches should get it out of their systems on bad ILM list threads like the rest of us.

I still only have part 2, heard it the other week, still sounds grand.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, can someone explain this to me? I have "As Heard On Radio Soulwax Pt. 2", it roolz. What these other mixes you speak of? Have they been put on release anywhere (I know "Pt. 2" was a Belgian import)? Or are they only available for download on SLSK, Kazaa, etc?

I was under the impression that the only non-live one was the one I have. Please please point me in the direction of the ones discussed above because I truely love "Pt. 2".

Nick H, Wednesday, 7 May 2003 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

apparently there are CD copies of Parts 1 and 3, 4 & 5 i acquired on import. they are all packaged in the same style as Part 2 but they are not legit. they are all compiled from the mixes on Soulwax's website and Parts 1 & 3 were broadcast on Radio 1 on Christmas Day 2001 which i recorded most of.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

What's a stepper's club? Seriously.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Charlie - sorry; "stepping" is I believe a local Chicago phenomenon (though it may be big in Detroit as well). It is a dance scene frequented by largely middle-class, older African-Americans (older meaning like 30's, 40's). There is a whole network of clubs on the south side of the city that people frequent. It's taken pretty seriously, dressing up is urgent and key. The music consists of an intriguing mix of jazzy downtempo, loping tracks. People refer to it as the "stepper's beat", and anything that conforms to the template could potentially get played but yeah it's largely just mellow soul music to facilitate the formalised couples dancing.

Think of something like "Joy & Pain" by Frankie Beverly & Maze. That kind of the beat. Or "Ridin' High" by Faze-O, some of the lighter Roy Ayers material, etc. Lots of current artists who I don't know anything about. But yeah something like Steve Miller's "Fly Like An Eagle" will creep into sets. I think there's some old Loggins & Messina cut that gets played occasionally. And I recall Donald Fagen's Kamakiriad being a bit of a hit on the scene.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 8 May 2003 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

no need to apologies, just never heard the term before - i had this vision of UK Garage MCs doing aerobics to Steve Miller...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 8 May 2003 02:08 (twenty-two years ago)
