Or, "Ignition (Remix)" VS. "The Jump Off." Both high quality tracks, methinks. Thoughts?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 5 May 2003 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Sadly haven't heard Ignition yet, but R. Kelly wins because he's FUCKING INSANE. Don't treat him like just anybody because then you treat him like nobody.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 5 May 2003 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm getting tired of saying this, but the orig. "Ignition" beats the pants of the remix (although both are pretty much pantsless to begin with). "The Jump Off", like most Kim songs, would be good without that awful, flowless little girl voice of hers. hell, R. is a better rapper than her, but he's just an all-around great vocalist.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 5 May 2003 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I love most of R. Kelly's singles and the previous two albums (before the new one, which I haven't heard), but is there anything about "Ignition" that isn't completely sub-par and going through the motions? Do I need to hear a certain remix to change my opinion?

s woods, Monday, 5 May 2003 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

the remix, I think, is doper. It's more upbeat and has that "early summer" vibe.

RA tha Rugged Man, Monday, 5 May 2003 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

S, if you have tp-2.com and R., fiesta, how can you be surprised that Kelly is, fiesta, in any way, going through the motions? Fiesta. I mean, that's his artform. Fiesta. I haven't heard Ignition though, Fiesta, so can you elaborate on the difference, fiesta, between his early works and this one, fiesta?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

how much would it cost to get R. Kelly to sing: "you thinkin' bout Wisconsin, I wanna breath that dairy air."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The Kelly ballads I'm familiar with and like (esp. great stuff from R like "When a Woman's Fed Up" and "Half on a Baby," though I love the hokey-in-spirit "I Wish" from TP2.com as well) are notable in part because he fucks around with r&b formula just enough to make the songs eccentric but never too much to make them inaccessible, and also, though I generally don't pay attention to lyrics at all, I thought the lyrics on those first two tracks I mentioned were fabulous, what I can remember of them anyway. It's probably an obvious thing to say, but "Ignition" just sounds like R. Kelly trying hard to be R. Kelly, giving us what he thinks is expected of him, a "love man" persona which just seems kind of tired. (Also, I admit, maybe it seemed especially tired--possibly even tasteless--after the controversy and all, though I try not to get too bogged down in thinking about that stuff when I hear something.) But as I said, I don't think what I've heard is a remix; whatever it is, it has so not jumped off the radio in my presence.

s woods, Tuesday, 6 May 2003 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

why is this a vs? cos you heard 2 rap tracks?

Chip Morningstar (bob), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

cuz they're both crotch-obsessed and have shown surprising career longevity.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

can't stand either

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 00:50 (twenty-two years ago)

eat me, chip

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Their longevity doesn't surprise me in the slightest. And who isn't crotch-obsessed, Anthony?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll amend the statement to "lyrically blunt about their crotch-obsession" and note I didn't say it was a bad thing.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

more cringe-inducing: R. referring to himself as "the pied piper" (not a good nickname for an alleged pedophile), or Kim's soda can-related bragging?

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

"you thought the sprite can was off the meter? imagine what i do with a 2-liter!" (jump off remix)

Honda (Honda), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

that Lil Kim line not remotely cringe inducing. that's great. Though Kelly's stuff would probably induce cringes from me if I didn't find it so hysterical. I guess I'm still kinda detached from connecting his persona with his actual crimes. Throw him in jail if he should go to jail, but I'm not gonna stop laughing in awe at Kelly the artist. I just realized how good the self-titled album is this week. Better than R. or Tp2-.com, or at least less ludicrous.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

ah, but ain't nothin compared to Jaheim or D'Angelo, right?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 01:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Haven't heard Jaheim, and D'Angelo has yet to move me. When I heard Prince's "Adore," I didn't think I wanted a whole album of it.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 01:31 (twenty-two years ago)

download Jaheim's "Fabulous" - genius.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

When I heard Prince's "Adore," I didn't think I wanted a whole album of it.

This is because you are mental. An album of nothing but "Adore" would approach Heaven On Earth.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 02:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Quite right. To complain would be like complaining that the rainbow doesn't have enough colors.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Not to toot my horn (ahem, beep beep) too much but have you seen my voice review of the latest scott?

http://villagevoice.com/issues/0312/clover.php

Anyway they're real easy to compare since Kim covers "A Woman's Threat" on her album and it fucking sucks.

The Ignition remix is leagues better than the original, I think especially for the fantastic choral effect, but lotsa foax said they loved the original and the remix did nothing for them. I have no idea why.

As I said before, I liked "The Jump Off" better when it was called Da Real World.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

but Ned, the rainbow CAN have more colors. The proof being the entirety of "Sign O The Times."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 02:45 (twenty-two years ago)

But wouldn't a completely indigo rainbow just be really, really cool?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 02:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Anthony that "Fiesta" post was completely classic

I think RK is massively underrated and that the version of "I Wish" on TP-2.com (which is one of the worst album titles EVER and pointed the unlucky surfer to one of the worst album tie-in websites EVER, fiesta) is my favorite kids-singin'-the-chorus song of recent years. The song captures every aspect of Kelly: one minute he's remarkably effective, almost surgical in pinpointing a feeling; the next he's gettin' all maudlin about how he can't "smoke trees" with his dead homie any more. Amazing, confusing, great.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Both indefensible crap.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

But wouldn't a completely indigo rainbow just be really, really cool?

Quite right. And it would sparkle.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i downloaded all of chocolate factory but only the jump off mp3.

brian badword (badwords), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

John's right about I Wish. How the man can mix a messianic streak, fake ass playas getting fake ass digits, Honey Love goin' platinum, the need for his hair to be braided and genuine sadness and mourning is baffling. He is totally underrated, but its still should be acknowledge the man is a)fucking insane, b)hysterically blunt, c)in dire need of an editor, d)probably going to jail for a loooong time.

Indigo rainbow...does that follow the Purple rain?
