Ok this is a Ronan thread but I have just heard the most amazing astounding tune of the year.

LINUS LOVES-THE TERRACE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh my god I wish I wasn't doing an essay right now!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 09:42 (twenty-two years ago)

It's like Cosmos meets DJ Gregory meets camp 80s electro!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 09:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 09:45 (twenty-two years ago)

insert several "I am not feeling this Ronan" comments here.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 09:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't heard it but it obv. made you jump for joy so that's good!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 09:51 (twenty-two years ago)

yes! it also reminded me of the best part of Saturday night, where I heard it first.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 09:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Aww, come on Ronan! Stand up for your love rights! Good for you, don't let the naysayers grind you down! Be out there and proud, baby!

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 09:52 (twenty-two years ago)

"why bother mixing at all"

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 09:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Well exactly, Ronan. Did I show any fear? Yes, quite a lot actually. But not as much as when I posted the same question on a DJ site.

Be foolhardy. Resist the norm. Stand lonely in the field and shout your proud dissent.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I for one am looking forward to the "What's it all about?" threads from Ronan when he enters the post-party comedown years.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 11:05 (twenty-two years ago)

they usually emerge midweek dv, have you not noticed?

or do you mean "todays dance music is nonsense"? That could be fun too.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 11:06 (twenty-two years ago)

look forward to hearing this - finally downloaded 'Waves II' last night and there's some great stuff on there especially Archigram's 'Doggystyle' which could be the biggest dark dancefloor rush since 'La Rock'

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 11:08 (twenty-two years ago)

what's waves II? not heard of it.

I've also come to love that Saffron Hill featuring Ben Ononononononon thing, it's pop as hell and hence quite hard to resist.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm SURE you know Waves II - the Crydamoure compilation mixed by Archigram - i got it off Nick K last night - pretty fine

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

did 'Put Your Hand In Mine' actually come out as a single yet btw?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a b-side to crazy talk, think it might have come out in April.

I know of the Archigram mix yeah, just didn't know the name. I hope to get it soon.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

"doggystyle" is a cover of the fall's "elves". that's what i'm believing, anyway.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

all the french house labels should become more openly bling, thomas blingalter and guy manuel homen de cristal and archigrams of cocaine and crydamoney need to do this.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Roule sleeves are totally bling

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

French House generally is totally bling. Those phased disco sounds are the sound that jewels were made if they were melted down and served in champagne glasses.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 02:19 (twenty-two years ago)

That's brilliant Tim.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 02:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Roule sleeves are cool.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 08:39 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/dance/

You can listen to the track there. insert several "im not feeling this ronan" comments below.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 24 May 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

haha this tune is killer. i'm having a slow morning, though. are there actual 80s songs being quoted here or is it just perfect pop deja vu?

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 24 May 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think it's ripped anything no! I just downloaded it from soulseek and it was a fake! Beware folks! I got some iffy detroit style filler track!

I must try and record that linked version somehow.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 24 May 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah and what happened to cosmos anyway? i was expecting that 'take me with you' track to be massive...

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 24 May 2003 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

It was pretty big here. I think some DJs hated it. I've had arguments which spanned an hour or so about that track, I think it's the very best house music can give, my friend thinks it's totally obvious shite.

He is wrong obviously, it is absolute genius. I can't see how this Linus Loves thing won't become gigantic either!

(4 exclamation marks in my post? I am losing my edge.)

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 24 May 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

btw Ronan I've meant to tell you that I do like the Bangalter & Falcon "So Much Love to Give" song you recommended to me... it's weird how people said some early disco songs pushed boredom into fascination, but this takes it to a whole new level! It's not exaggerating (for those who don't know the song) to say it basically repeats what would be a chorus fragment over and over for a full 15 minutes. Several Daft Punk songs do this (maybe other artists too, I'm not really into this genre enough to know), but those tracks only do it for a few minutes. "So Much Love to Give" is like the ultimate distillation of this. Aside from song mixing effects, such as the drums fading in and out, nothing changes for the duration of the track. I like it, but wouldn't want a steady diet of it. In a way, its the perfect anti-Geir song: no songwriting, all arrangement and production!

Sean (Sean), Saturday, 24 May 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, "The Terrace" is TOTALLY STEVIE NICKS' "STAND BACK"!!!!!

Which by no means makes it bad, oh no.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 24 May 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

just as well you warned me about the slsk fake, ronan - I thought yd lost yr edge in a major way, but the track on the bbc site is great - it's waaaay too early in the morning but all the background milk-bottle sort of things are bliss to me right now. would like to hear this in a BIG ROOM but there's probably no chance of that with the state of auckland clubs etc.
ooh BASSLINE!

Ess Kay (esskay), Saturday, 24 May 2003 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

It is fun. One of the coolest things about hearing this stuff out is that if you've been out all night and partying you forget alot of the songs which were really good. So on the day at the top of this thread I was listening to the Essential Selection from the BBC website and this came on, it completely unlocks memories for you, who you were with, who was playing, what you did, etc etc.

So Much Love To Give is exactly that Sean, the ultimate distillation. I agree I wouldn't want loads of tracks like that, in some senses it's a "there can be only one!" sort of thing. I mean, a DJ just can't play two songs like that in a night, the club would melt or something! It's also cheating. The DJ has to earn a record like So Much Love To Give, by playing a wicked set beforehand, because for all intents and purposes it's the sample he leaves looping in your ears while you queue for coats and get kicked out by the bouncers.

It's self congratulatory, but for every person in the nightclub at the time.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 25 May 2003 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I so want this 15 minute version of "So Much Love To Give". They one I have is only about 4 mins and has Seb Fontaine talking over the beginning. Bastard Uni network blocks Kazaa and slsk though.

Nick H, Sunday, 25 May 2003 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a limited cd single release, i saw them in London but had no money. cd sized roule sleeve=nice!

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 25 May 2003 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

So can someone tell me what the central sample used in "So Much Love To Give" is from?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 25 May 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

...assuming, of course, that it IS a sample.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 25 May 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm still not at all sure.

I think this Linus Loves track samples that Felix track from last year, the one under a different moniker.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 25 May 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

You mean Thee Jamie Starr Scenario thing? That's a big-ass lift from "Stand Back," too (or maybe Linus Loves is stealing from Felix is stealing from Stevie Nicks*) though I think it's more exciting than the original, especially on the 2 Many DJ's set.

*Stevie Nicks: "By the way, Prince did come into the studio the night I called him and told him about the song, and he played incredible synthesizer on it...and then he just walked out of my life, and I didn't see him for a long time. It was extraordinary..."

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 25 May 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I found the original of the terrace on soulseek, wahey. I must download both of those now and compare.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 25 May 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i picked up a 12" promo of the terrace the other day, totally unheard, purely on ronan's recommendation.

michael wells (michael w.), Sunday, 25 May 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

do you like it? it's the best thing i've heard but it's not been a great year.

warning:the fake version on soulseek is some fucking awful dirge

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 25 May 2003 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i just got back from london today and only had a quick listen on my shitty old record player with the rubbish speakers but, yeah, it sounds ace. did a bit of record shopping down there and am made up w/ my buys: zoot woman - it's automatic (cosmos mixes), mr fingers - what about this love (get in!! after years of searching), kathy sledge - take me back to love again (ditto!), blake baxter - one more time, housemaster boyz - house nation, reel by real - aftermath, a guy called gerald - automanikk.

and, yeah, not a vintage year so far.

michael wells (michael w.), Sunday, 25 May 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

there's an ancient detroit-style techno guy from the netherlands named stefan robbers who recorded as "terrace" on djax and eevo lute. that's prolly what the "fake" is.

vahid (vahid), Monday, 26 May 2003 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Bollocks, I can't find this on BBC, just the Plump DJs.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 26 May 2003 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the Cosmos It's Automatic thing yeah. There are shitloads of good records this year, few great ones. Maybe last year didn't kick off till July or August either I forget.

Bangalter's Outrage thing is one of my favourites still.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 26 May 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Linus Loves - The Terrace (since it's not linked on the BBC dance page anymore).

slsk users - the fake version is 5:09; the real thing is 6:46 (& hasn't turned up so far, depressingly).

Ess Kay (esskay), Monday, 26 May 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Banglater's 'Outrage' sounds like a supersonic abattoir.

Michael B, Tuesday, 27 May 2003 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Which is a good thing btw...

Michael B, Tuesday, 27 May 2003 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay, I now have the full version of "So Much Love To Give". Needless to say, it roolz.

Nick H, Wednesday, 28 May 2003 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i've just discovered Bangalter's mix of Roy Davis Jr's 'Rock Shock' - a superb wondrous thing, and there's even a video (also fantastic)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh ooh I bought Waves II in Selectadisc this afternoon and have just whacked it in my CD player now - seeing this thread gives me much joy.

Track one sounding good - but any CD with four Archigram tracks on can't be bad.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

my fave tracks on Waves II are 'Carnival' and 'Doggystyle' obv, plus 'Soul Bells' and 'If You Give Me The Love I Want'

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Archigram are fucking gods, maybe the only act I can think of making MASSIVE tracks which aren't big and obvious. I don't mind big and obvious really but still.

Fuck I want Waves II, why can't I have it? Is this why I am working in the bank? Yes.

Who is Roy Davis Jr? I heard somewhere it was just Thomas himself.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

ronan can you play mp3 CDs yet or shall i just send you a couple of audio ones? i need some more CDs first - did you ever hear Siegbran's recent mixes? i can burn you those too if you want.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i assume it was actually Roy Davis Jr who SINGS 'Gabriel' but not sure - downloading his 'Traxx From The Nile' album now

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Outrage is a stunning track. The B side Paris By Night is brilliant too, in case you haven't heard it yet.

Most 2002 tracks I liked came out in or after the summer, so it isn't too strange that this year seems to have a bad start. However, I already heard about twenty, thirty amazing tunes this year but that's from more genres than just house, and quite a few of these are promo's.

Anyone heard the Summer Jam/Fiesta bootleg, by the way? A bit of an easy cut/paste job, but it works...and it seems to be getting a proper release now, so I expect this to get in the charts.

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I can now play and copy MP3 ones steve, new comp, so send away yes. I am working on a mix but my mixmeister skills are far from meisterly, still I'll keep you all posted.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I have it now on s*sk as do some other foax. You gotta search for one labeled "(Original Mix)".

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 2 June 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah I eventually got it off Siegbran this morning, 6.47 mins long. Though I'm convinced the version I have has slightly fluctuating volume levels.

Felix Da Housecat played this last night, it went down pretty well in a big club, it's really all about the way the bass is exactly in sync with the riff itself, and so the impact of the synths is really really tangible and good to dance to.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 2 June 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i assume it was actually Roy Davis Jr who SINGS 'Gabriel' but not sure

!

the vocals were pevan everett (sp?), roy davis jr produced the track

gareth (gareth), Monday, 2 June 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

four months pass...
Ronan, "Stand Back" just came out over here - I'm assuming it's "The Terrace" with vocals?

I like it. It reminds me a lot of "Take Me With You" which is definitely a good thing.

Someone needs to make a compilation with the following tunes:

Linus Loves - Stand Back
Cosmos - Take Me With You
Lacquer - Behind
Cosmo Vitelli - Party Day
Archigram - Carnival

What else would go on this compilation?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 31 October 2003 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Apart from Space Cowboy obv.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 31 October 2003 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I prefer The Terrace minus vocals, though maybe.

Also on that comp Tim

We In Music-Now That The Love Has Gone (LRD Remix)

Mateo-Fat Phaze

Eric Prydz-Slammin (really nice but has this nasty subliminal style "keeeeeeeeeeep this party slaaaaaaaaaamin" vocal which kind of ruins it).

Bangalter/Falcon-Call On Me (obv)

Also Krvsin by Prassay, which no one seems to have heard. It's a weird filtered french record with a really orchestral and instrumental breakdown. It's all based around this filtered bassline which is really subtle but still quite pop.

I think it's DJ Gregory under a pseudonym, it was a great record to have in the stereo in the summer. And yeah I guess I want people to check it out.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 31 October 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Seelenluft's 'Manila' should go on the comp (in fact, this is looking a lot like a compilation I'd make for this year's house and dance best).

Barima (Barima), Friday, 31 October 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I alos heard Linus put Romanthony's 'One More Time' vocals over 'The Terrace', which makes a glorious amount of sense.

What say you boys to the other Breastfed stuff - Mylo's 'Destroy Rock'n'Roll' and the mini-classic 'Wolves of Miami', and 'The Terrace' B-side 'My Name Is'?

Barima (Barima), Friday, 31 October 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm sorry but i am totally ALAN BRAXE 'RUBICON''s (big booty) bitch and so should you all be

'In Love With You' also marv

still loving Syndicated People's 'Be Right' too

stevem (blueski), Friday, 31 October 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Not heard any of the other breastfed stuff, not for want of trying mind you.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 31 October 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Obv the secret thread to the record i'm proposing is that it has to be very pop.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 1 November 2003 04:56 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
Album! Staged Invader
Yeah, it's 3 years later, but this stuff still sounds great and this album is mostly awesome. Very nice Fleetwood Mac vibe going on in several of the tracks..

gaseous (gaseous), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 18:11 (nineteen years ago)

I don't like the re-workings of one or two of the tunes, actually was kinda disappointed by this album as a whole.

Linus had done a good few nice balearic type remixes and the album ended up being more Mylo style.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

I haven't heard the album but sort of want it to be very poppy - am I likely to be disappointed? That 10cc cover is good. Obviously, not house music at all, but enjoyable all the same.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 22 June 2006 07:11 (nineteen years ago)

it's not really very anything!

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 22 June 2006 09:20 (nineteen years ago)

Oh should I listen to the album? The press release put me off it (I think the word 'indie' was used) but the Dada Life remix is obv great. Is the album like that?

(nb I do not know where my copy has actually got to)

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 22 June 2006 09:30 (nineteen years ago)

I *hate* the new sped up version of The Terrace! He's a complete idiot if he thinks it sounds better that way.

The album is extremely Mylo-like and despite a couple of alright tracks there are too many ill-advised campy moments which induce a series of sad head-shaking sessions for me.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 22 June 2006 10:56 (nineteen years ago)

yeah that new version of 'the terrace' is shit! the rest of it is... ok.

you'd think an archigram album would pwn this. where ARE they?

indie disco dancer, sweet romancer (haitch), Thursday, 22 June 2006 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
anyone seen linus loves live? playing next friday . . . all I know (+ love) is the original "the terrace" & the dada life remix.

etc (esskay), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 22:18 (nineteen years ago)
