Eagerly awaiting the protracted legal battle over who gets the red stripes and who gets the white ones.

Bummer. Great band.

Kind of sad, but it seems right. Any subsequent albums would've just felt like kicking a dead horse.

agree, they'd played out their sound -- great first 3 albums, went epic/zep stylee on Elephant, then pushed the boundaries a bit on the last couple w/ diminishing returns. good time to call it quits imo

i really hated '00s garage rock in general (no time for any of that strokes, hives, vines bullshit) but these guys did it right.

well, strokes and vines weren't really garage rock, so

I enjoy "Hate To Say I Told You So" more than any White Stripes tunes (and I like the White Stripes).

I played a show once where we got a terrible review and they compared my drumming to Meg White. I took it as a huge compliment!

The 00s' most boring, overrated band have split up, and have done so by posting - as someone noted upthread - an incoherent, doubtless narcotics-fuelled load of gibberish as a farewell message on their website.

mostly i think it's wack that the #1 rock band of the 2000s (and i wouldn't dispute that they are in most senses) dealt so comfortably with dull blues-isms

Some of us like the blues-isms. And think that the way blues-isms were essentially made verboten in the late 70's was a case of throwing the baby out with the bathwater, and are glad that the #1 rock band of the 2000s felt comfortable to indulge them rather than stick to no-arse, unswung, straight 8th, Julie Andrews major-key plod. And like the way the White Stripes went back to the source, skipping the Claptonisms and covering Son House, and the appealing way the backdoor man mythology of the blues contrasted with a guy who was "finding it harder to be a gentleman everday" and "wants to be the boy who warms your mother's heart". Some of us anyway.

I never minded them, but I haven't bought any of their records either. They've always seemed to me to be the last band that will get inducted into the RNR Hall of Fame before the doors are shuttered forever on that place in 2023.

kind of imagine dylan would be white's ultimate white whale, in terms of producing an album. he's even baiting dylan by having wanda jackson cover "thunder on the mountain."

i have more stripes records (lots of singles) than i thought i did. still think most of their ballady/gentler stuff is generally their weakest (even the stuff like got her in your pocket, jack sounds like hes trying too hard to be earnest/tender) but i give him some respect for being one of the few mainstream rockers to say something about immigration (even if it did sound like a bad prince lyric).

I love all six albums. "the nurse" is the only song that gets skipped often.
