Where are any of those people today?

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

"Looking back, I knew it wouldn't last. I learnt an important lesson that afternoon..."

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Are these the best days of our lives?
Too late.. Once you ask the question, those days are over. Just like the coyote walking off a cliff doesn't know he's dead meat until he looks down.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Being grown up isn't half as fun as growing up.

One of the world's great lies.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Like "You are what you eat".

No, you're not.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Does ILM get what song this is from? Or are they COMPLETELY out of touch with mainstream US chart rock.

PS - This band sucks.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't think we care.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I admit it I am COMPLETELY out of touch with mainstream US chart rock. Is it Gogogo Airheart?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

it must be Nickelback.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

they're the only band that sucks in the whole USA.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Just becuase John Cougar Mellencamp is not a band. He is a man.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't the band the Ataris? I heard this on the radio the other day and thought it was probably the worst song ever...

M Specktor (M Specktor), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know what it its, but I'll bet the lyrics aren't as good as all of the lines you just read. See? That right there could be a song.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

the lyrics are like taking early Promise Ring "emo" cliches and making them 2347823784234 times gayer.

GET IT.... GAY! GAY!

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

is it The All-American Rejects?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I like the Atari's! Total Dawson's Rock man!

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

oh GOD do I hate this song. Musically it's decent Jimmy Eat World whatever but lyrically it's...really dumb Jimmy Eat World whatever. The video makes it all the more hysterical, watching a man emote with his facial features while trying to maintain a Goo Goo Doll rasp (plus still frames - like Loverboy!). All-American Rejects know how to make their emo pieties SWOON with an '80s sheen. These guys are much, much more mundane.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Where are any of those people today?

On "I Love the 80's"

The song's pretty much just copped off "The Middle", songwriting's a lot poorer, tho. I enjoy seeing The Atari's labeled 'mainstream chart rock'. All the faux-punx I know have been into them for years.

Adam A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

They're Midwestern Emo influenced pop punk shit who made it big.

Now... Jimmy Eat World.... was once amazing.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

three months pass...
If you haven't heard the Ataris' song "Summer '79," you haven't heard the half of it. The lyrics alone make steam shoot out from my ears. And I don't even mind, on paper, the idea of a Jimmy Eat World clone band doing hamfisted, desperately obvious "manufactured nostalgia songs," aimed at some barely existent audience - but not songs THIS hamfisted!

Our last day of summer, 1979.
Gotta live it up one more time before it's over.
We will make history tonight.

Out at the drive-in,
all of our closest friends well be sneaking in.
You'll be spending your whole night
trying everything you can to get that girl to notice you.

"We are the Champions" playing loud on the radio station.
Everyone sing along with these anthems of our generation.
Cruising down Pacific Coast Highway,
put the top down, crawl into the back seat.
Let's create anthems of our own tonight.

Down at the roller rink
all the cool kids crowding around the air-hockey table.
"Hey, my best friend likes you!"
I hear you shout at me as you go skating by.
Sneak out of your window, darling.
Let's live like outlaws, honey.
We'll never look back.

Climb out on this rooftop.
And stare at the city lights below us.
This world belongs to us tonight.
The kids will keep raging on and they ain't ever gonna stop.

The Pumpkins already did the same damn year a hell of a lot better.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 8 August 2003 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, I was born in the summer of '79! Thur like old and stuff.

Prude (Prude), Friday, 8 August 2003 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

oh man FUCK the Ataris. Their cover of Boys of Summer is evil evil evil evil evil evil.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 8 August 2003 01:34 (twenty-two years ago)

fuck em indeed, and fuck bryan adams too! i was six in 79, how old are the Ataris?

chad (chad), Friday, 8 August 2003 03:29 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a lame band of young'ns in my town (saskatoon, SK canada), doing this same thing. They have a local radio hit called "8 track". They are so fucking clueless that the chorus says "flip the 8track"!@! I'm only 30, but at least i know that you DON"T HAVE TO FLIP 8TRACKS. morons.who are they trying to reach????

chad (chad), Friday, 8 August 2003 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

When did they become emo? I swear, last time I heard them was on a mac commercial singing "The radio still sux!!" Indeed.

The new video includes every cliche they could shoehorn in, including him with his cameras, taking PHOTOS, MAN, that show how MUNDANE suburbia is, you know, and the melancholy of it all.

David Allen, Friday, 8 August 2003 03:44 (twenty-two years ago)

'let's create anthems of our own tonight'!!! (does that 'work', btw?)

dave q, Friday, 8 August 2003 08:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude! What's wrong with being gay? I am! It's fun! And yeah, I like that song, so maybe it is a really gay song.

Jeff K. (Jeffrey), Sunday, 25 April 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

The Ataris are nostalgic for reruns of That 70s Show.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Sunday, 25 April 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm nostalgic for the spaghetti i had the other night for dinner. it was really good.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 25 April 2004 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Ahh, yes, the clever Boys of Summer cover, which seems to be like every pseudo-punk cover nowadays.

OMG LET'S TAKE AN 80'S POP SONG, SPEED UP THE TEMPO, PALM MUTE THE CHORDS, AND SHOUT SNOTILLY OVER THE TOP.

Guess what...FAT MIKE KEEPS RELEASING ENTIRE CDS OF THAT GIMMICK IN HIS ME FIRST AND THE GIMME GIMMES SIDE PROJECT. It's not fresh, it's not new, it's not creative, and it's not fun.

And the Ataris suck.

Anything that keeps him from making new NOFX records, I'm all for!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Sunday, 25 April 2004 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't mind the Gimme Gimmes because they aren't ashamed of the fact that they're just a silly gimmick and for a fun listen once in a while, they can be enjoyable.

But the Ataris...blech. The only reason I can forgive their covers is how much worse their original material is.

uh, Sunday, 25 April 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

The Orgy Syndrome.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 25 April 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I originally thought the chorus line was "Being grown up isn't half as fun as throwing up."
