Neko Case is Playboy.com's Sexiest Babe of Indie Rock
Which indie rock chick looks as great as she sounds? When 32 percent of you
voted for Neko Case in our recent poll for the sexiest woman of indie rock
(she received more than twice as many votes as the runner-up), you answered
us loud and clear.
Was it her gorgeous red hair? Her killer body? After reading tons of online
blog comments we found about the poll, it seems her music was as important as
her looks. "My vote goes to Neko Case," gushed one poster. "Her sexiness
exceeds her earthly shell and her voice invokes the gods to smile." Another
blogger enthused, "I am absolutely in love with Neko Case. The best voice of
our generation and shining looks to go with it."
Will alt-country's favorite pinup girl ever pose for Playboy? We caught up
with her at her home in Arizona to find out.
Playboy.com: Be honest. Did you vote for yourself?
Neko Case: Of course not! I voted for Cat Power. She's the hottest in my
mind. To me, sexiness means you're intriguing, and what you do is quality,
and interesting, and mysterious and exciting. That's why she's hot. Not to
mention she's a great guitar player, which is very hot, especially for
ladies. It would take me hours to mention all my favorite sexy ladies in
music -- but I've got a whole list of them on my website.
PB: You won by a landslide -- your fans must think you're pretty sexy.
NC: Well, if they could see me at home, they'd think otherwise! But I feel
honored. I've liked Playboy since I was a kid. I always thought the ladies
looked so beautiful.
PB: Do you remember the first Playmate you ever saw?
NC: It was [Miss December 1972] Mercy Rooney, who's wearing wool chaps and
standing in front of a chair made out of horns in her Centerfold. I actually
found a copy of it in a used bookstore. I always hang it above my workspace.
It totally inspires me. She looks so tough! She's riding a horse naked in her
other pictures. Do you know how sharp those little bones are on a horse's
back? Oh, please. It would be very painful.
PB: Would you ever consider posing for Playboy?
NC: Well, of course I would consider it! But I certainly need time to think
about it. It would be a lot of fun, but I'm also a little bit shy. And I
don't have a lot of faith in the media. If I posed, every article written
about me from then on would start with "former Playboy pinup girl" before my
name. I don't want that. The music's gotta come first.
PB: Fair enough. Assuming you did pose, how would you like to do it?
NC: A retro pictorial would be the most fun. I don't want it to be campy,
though. I loved Sherilyn Fenn's [December 1990] pictures. She looked classy
and glamorous, but she also looked comfortable. There were no stiletto heels..
She wasn't bending over suggestively for the camera pretending to fix a car
or something. That stuff is a little cheesy. But a naked woman is great. I'll
definitely have to think about it. Believe me, it's on my mind, and I feel
very honored to be asked.
