I only have Le Chat Bleu and a few random tracks ("Spanish Stroll" most esp.). I'm thinking classic-ish, in a minor league way. The Crash Davis of post-punk doo-wop?

JesseFox (JesseFox), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I have Cabretta. Pretty good, yeah, in a "minor league way."

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Willy Deville was the American Phil Lynott.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, this minor-classic thing is about right. Unfortunately it is not making for a thrilling thread.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

"Spanish Stroll" is major-league classic, but I don't think he's done anything else quite as good.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

To add a little seediness and salaciousness...

I recall that he was staying in the same fleabag New Orleans hotel as Johnny Thunders when J.T. tied off for the last time. Willy said he didn't know anything about it.

JesseFox (JesseFox), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i've always liked "coup de grace". and that song he did for the "princess bride" soundtrack is oh so sweet... ;)

CLASSIC. Soooooo underrated. "Savoir Faire", "Spanish Stroll", "This Must be The Night", etc etc. Such great songs. All the Mink Deville albums are great, and some of his solo stuff is too, like the one produced by Mark knopfler "Desire".

"Cabretta," or "Mink DeVille," is still a personal fave from when I was a kid. Nice, er, strut, as we used to say, and really gorgeous ballads -- search "Party Girls," "She's So Tough" (awesome) and "Can't Do Without It."

wow, that's awful. I'm a huge Mink DeVille fan, grew up with his records playing constantly in my house. I hate it that he seems to be living in such obscurity

I meant THEY'RE records playing constantly, although Willy DeVille albums got played, as well

Shit, we were listening to "Cadillac Walk" only last night, and "Spanish Stroll" is one of my partner's all-time favourite records. RIP.

interesting bit here on toots deville, who sounds ... interesting from a distance, and probably a disaster up close.

flying squid attack (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 11 August 2009 20:44 (sixteen years ago)

(or maybe not a disaster, exactly -- the final couple of comments to that post give some added perspective.)

R.I.P. Wished I had tracked down the dude. one of the few folks left who could tell me about Jack Nitzsche, i reckon.

I highly recommend the Doc Pomus bio by Alex Halberstadt that is quoted in that link.

Wow I started this thread 17 years ago. Astounding. Well, to answer myself then. his mid-'90s solo album Backstreets of Desire is unexpectedly good.

That Toots DeVille link is still active and quite interesting. One picture of Willie, Toots and his manager sitting in wheelchair had me thinking manager was Doc Pomus for a second.
