Cause who else likes it, really?

(Note: This is not a diss at all to the rappers on Def Jux. I like a lot of it.)

David Allen, Tuesday, 6 May 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm not here, this isn't happening.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

haha - um, 2002 to thread!

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Those crazy white people...

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

dude its not okay for indie rockers to like def jux anymore! now they're only allowed to like eminem and fred durst and mantronix oh and also Loon, but only "ironically".

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

keep up with the trends man.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

now that indie-rockers abandoned it def-jux is straight back to the "race music" ghetto until nu-soulboys rediscover it in the year 2020.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

AND WHERE DOES MICROHOUSE FIT INTO ALL THIS?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

man if patrin don't show we'll know he really is gone

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you know vocals on the last Delgados album were done entirely by Mr Lif?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

THERE IS NO IRONY IN THE FRED DURST LOVE YOU FUCKING WANKSTA! YOU BETTER WATCH OUT, CUZ I'M A CRACK ADDICT, ADDICTED TO CRACKIN' SKULLS WHO BE CAUSING STATIC! CHOCOLATE STARFISH ON YOU!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Indie rockers have FAR from bandoned Def Jux... ask any scenester kid who their favorite hip hop artist is and Aesop Rock will nearly always prevail. Though the Rhymesayers are gaining ground quickly. As if it really matters though..

Bobby D Gray (bedhead), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

those aren't real indie-rockers, bobby.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Aesop Rock is good.

Adam A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Anticon to thread

Sami (Sami), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

sterling is right - those aren't real indie rockers

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Who got the idea that I was "gone"? I just post on ILE more often and also when I get off work I'm too tired for much else than "oh great, another 'indie rock fans hate to dance and music they like is stupid' thread, I'll be back when this blows over*" and I go play Midnight Club II instead.

*hahaha wishful thinking

(Besides, we all know the real cokebottle herbs are into Dalek now)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyway, the serious answer is "No".

Also, pseudo-indie parka-wearing Coral-loving crypto-twee NME-reading Idlewild-loving dick-in-ear Bleu-Bolt-jeaned facial-glittered "Not In My Name" alternotwats listen to no hip hop whatsoever. Except MOP, obviously.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

No way, Dom. So much of Radiohead is really rap, when you get down to it!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, Yanc3y, have you heard "Hail To The Thief" yet! It's so political, Radiohead are commiting career suicide! If only some of these rappers had the political knowledge of Thom Yorke, maybe I'd listen to more of it!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

(Shit, I'm turning into jess)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i seriously thought this was a revived thread!

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

"Idioteque" = CRUNK AS FUCK

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

as does "National Anthem"

Kid A hatas= morans

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Totally, Dom! I mean, yeah, Public Enemy was like *totally* my life's fulcrum point but so much of hip-hop since has just been so dumb! It seems like Thom Yorke's the only person who remembers It Takes A Birth of a Nation to Hold Us Back anymore! Jay-Z's the WORST!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

haha my work is done here

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

But you didn't do anything

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't he Nate? Didn't he?

(No, wait, he didn't)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

If Jess is Joe Torre I'm Sterling Hitchcock.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

can i be akira felini?

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

"...and when I woke up, I could smell a faint hint of chloroform and I was bleeding from the anus"

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Thread inspired by ANOTHER Def Jux review saying the same thing and always giving, at minimum, a 7.

David Allen, Wednesday, 7 May 2003 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha, I got an issue of Urb that has a letter complaining about them being Jukie jockriders! So maybe it's rap that's okay for house/club fiends to like (this issue had Felix da Housecat on the cover; I love the fuck out of this crossover demographic)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

three years pass...
You guys mostly hate Lif, right? Well fuck it, man, I think Mo Mega is pretty fucking killer. Even the way he reuses that Edan beat from the Perceptionist album is cool.

100% CHAMPS with a Yes! Attitude. (Austin, Still), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 18:51 (nineteen years ago)

FORMER CHAMPION (pete38), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 19:07 (nineteen years ago)

I can't handle Lif's nasal monotone, especially over the course of an entire album. The best part of Mo Mega is Murs' lines on "Murs Iz My Manager".

regular roundups (Dave M), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 19:17 (nineteen years ago)

It's all about the Despot over at DJ

Uncle Tom (Uncle Tom), Thursday, 24 August 2006 15:27 (nineteen years ago)

three years pass...

http://www.shabooty.com/2010/02/02/def-jux-has-folded.php

BREAKING: MANY OF MY SOURCES ARE TELLING ME THAT INDIE HIP-HIP RECORD LABEL, DEFINITIVE JUX HAS INDEED FOLDED.

Before I detail the evidence… I guess I’ll say for the record that I have reached out to El-P, and I am waiting for official comment. If and when I hear back with a statement, I will update this post. Until then, here are the things I have been reading.

UPDATE: I heard from El-P himself. He told me that he’d be sure to let me know when there is [an official statement ready].

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:46 (sixteen years ago)

:(

goldblapp (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:51 (sixteen years ago)

weren't they supposed to releasing a deluxe funcrusher plus with juvenile technique and stuff on it?

i mean not that that would save them in 2010

zvookster, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:08 (sixteen years ago)

suppose this is the definitive true extinguishing of the fondle 'em flame

zvookster, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:09 (sixteen years ago)

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 10:09 (sixteen years ago)

always do a double take when I see a Def Jux list w/ Dizzee on it

I googled Mike Watt. He doesn't sound that famous (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 10:14 (sixteen years ago)

so, not "folding" per se but going on an indefinite hiatus ?

I am confused about what this actually means, unless it is meant to be ambiguous

lukevalentine, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 10:15 (sixteen years ago)

or perhaps my reading comprehension is poor

lukevalentine, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 10:16 (sixteen years ago)

Will be interesting to see how this plays out. I love this label; on the other hand El-P is fucking fantastic live and if this means he can tour more broadly and release more than 2 records in a decade, why not?

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 15:03 (sixteen years ago)
