They were ruthlessly slagged off in a review...

...but from that review alone, you knew you were going to like them. And you did. Who were they?

Chicks on Speed - 'Chicks On Speed Will Save The World!" in The Wire.

Made me realise how little fun they were at this magazine, how much of a nerdy bunch of boys they really were. The review was complaining that they dared to have an interest in fashion design (they even made their own clothes out of paper) - which, as every nerdy boy knows, is not cool. Ha.

Gary Numan - I, Assassin, reviewed in NME way back in about 1982. I will never forget this review of this unbelievably dark and funky album. It said he was 'three parts dead and proud of it'. I thought, wow, I've got to hear this record, he sounds like a real freak. And he was. One of Prince's favourite albums, QED.

Going back to that Chicks record, I remember thinking, "they're trashbags who make their own clothes out of paper, they like Malaria and The Normal, and The Wire hates them? They must be really good! And they were.

with dog and jim all the way, i was musing about Steven Wells just this morning on the way to work. i pretty much detest everything he stands for. i know his political views are right-on, but his writing is pure essence of bigotry. he still thinks the clash are the best group in the world! he still manages to get gigs writing for NEW music papers!

hang on, i'll start a thread...
