I'm being told that my current version of slsk is obsolete and that i need an upgrade.

I havew version 147 and as far as I know this is the latest version. What gives? Anyone else getting this?

yeah, i had it. d/l-ed the latest version off slsk.org and now fine...

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 08:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorted. I tried downloading it again but it didn't work so I started from scratch by deleting soulseek and then reinstalling it and it works fine now.

one year passes...
have found search results poor lately despite donating. upgraded to the new 155 version and they seem even worse! what's wrong the search function? only get a handful of results for anything, no super-fast users and now it looks like no-one can download from me either - seems a lot of people can't see each other anymore.

yeah, it's a disaster :-( mine was fine on wednesday, and i've just fired it up again to find no search results at all, unless i search in room/userlist (which is still fine). see here for more discussion, but no answers:

http://forums.slsknet.org/BB2/viewtopic.php?t=16

this has happened before, though, and it sorted itself out then. so i'm not too pessimistic.

which rooms are you searching in toby? i guess i'll have to bump up the amount of people in my userlist as there are currently only about 5 people (out of 30) on it actually connected...

I'VE BEEN USING SOULSEEK FOR 9 MOS NOW AND HAVE NEVER HAD PROBLEMS SEARCHING POPULAR TITLES. WHEN YOU TYPE IN MADONNA OR GREEN DAY I GET RESULTS AROUND 50 OR SO INSTEAD OF HUNDREDS. THIS STARTED 12/28 WHEN I UPGRADED TO THE NEW VERSION. NONE OF MY SETTINGS HAVE CHANGED EITHER. ARE THERE DIFFERENT PORTS I CAN TRY? I HAVE IT SET TO 2234. THIS HAS BEEN THE BEST PEER-TO-PEER SITE I HAVE FOUND SINCE NAPSTER, MORPHEUS, WINMX ETC BECAME EITHER DEFUNCT OR LAME OVER THE YEARS. PLEASE, PLEASE FIX THIS PROBLEM!!!

stevie nixed (stevie nixed), Saturday, 1 January 2005 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

there's a better one called soulseeX.

cutty (mcutt), Sunday, 2 January 2005 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

the wishlist search results are complete ass lately. :-(

I use "solarseek" on my imac. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the full soulseek, but it gets the job done. Check out: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15679

Uh, I noticed that I need to connect manually after I did the upgrade.
There's a little boxed graphic in the upper left corner with a pair of electrical jacks and some lightning bolts. Click that. Click connect.
Works for me, at least.

I think the post from Arsenic on this page

http://forums.slsknet.org/BB2/viewtopic.php?t=16&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=45&sid=a2b5fbe5d1caa21e29edb4d9deb60013

maybe provides an explanation, especially the paragraph on "Server Search Skipping".

My understanding of what they are saying is that the load on the server has reached such a point that they have had to find ways of reducing it in order to continue to provide any sort of service at all, at the cost of offering (a lot) fewer search hits from global searches.

Now it may be that whatever algorithm they are using for this is almost too "effective", in the sense that the result for the user is such a dramatic reduction in hits from global searches. (And there may be some scope for them to tweak that? I dunno, I'm guessing...)

But the last couple of lines there:

"Basically the Global Search is not going to get any better soon, it will even eventually go worse as more users get on board. Hopefully in 155 you now have new tools for much more efficient searches than in the past: Userlist and Room search."

suggest that basically the behaviour is here to stay, and users need to find strategies other than global search i.e. search within userlist or within room.

I haven't tried either of these so I don't know whether they will produce better results or not. And I'm just reporting (my understanding of) what I read there, so don't shoot the messenger! ;-)

Finally, something like a real explanation for why searching performance has gone downhill. The slsk team sucks at getting information out. Why didn't they announce this a year ago?

W i l l (common_person), Sunday, 2 January 2005 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Recently, when trying to download from someone after running a search, I get a "Remote: File not shared" message, and then immediately get an automated message from the user, basically saying "Browse my files to download from me- running a search and then trying to download from me will result in the 'files not shared' message.

Even after doing this, I still can't download from these users. It's happened 3-4 times now in the last few days.

Anybody else getting this?

cdwill, Monday, 3 January 2005 02:32 (twenty-one years ago)

that happens when someone is using nicotine usually. it not working afterwards is probably just a coincidental bad port forwarding issue.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 3 January 2005 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

cdwill, it's been covered on other slsk threads. It has to do with them running an alternative client that's not keeping the indexing up to date. If you browse their files and don't see the files, then they're no longer shared. Otherwise, they probably moved them to a different folder.

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 3 January 2005 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

This is awful. I've been getting next to no hits for days and hoping it was a temporary problem. So what do you do if you're a Nicotine user? Are the new functions of 155 (userlist and room search) available? Ugh, what a nightmare.

michaelnelson, Monday, 3 January 2005 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't even connect to the server using 155.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 3 January 2005 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

message from nir just now:

"sorry for the crashes and non-working searches. we know the system has been complete crap in the last few months and we do apologize. what you're experiencing is a concentrated effort to fix the searches problem, please bear with us as we hope to bring the situation to a resolution within the new couple of days. thanks, nir"

What I've taken to doing is adding everything I search for into my wishlist.
