S/D - Mid 90s US garage

King Street, Cajual, Basement Boys, Soulfuric and on and on.

Reams of this stuff was made. I loved it, particularly its obsurity and seeming obliviousness to modern music trends. The wailing gospel numbers, the slightly trite love songs and the stuck-in-the-70s nature of the diss tracks "that tramp better keep away from my man" etc.

So what were the classics?

I submit:

Michael Proctor - "Love don't live"
UBP - "Your heaven"
Dajae - "Fakes and phonies" (Johnny Fiasco mix)
Kerri Chandler - "Raw grooves 3"

As a starter for ten...

Mood II Swing - All Night Long is one tune of that genre that I've always loved

the answer is simple.

New Jersey Deep by Black Science Orchestra

Mike Taylor (mjt), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

but Ashley Beedle is British!

so were Farley & Heller but 'There But For The Grace Of God Go I' by Fire Island is probably the definitive US garage track (altho really i cannot distinguish it from US house other than the gospel vibe)

still i'd wouldnt class that Black Science Orchestra track as US garage anyway - its just a house track with major jazz elements ala St Germain

the other thing is how much you consider Todd Edwards to overlap house and garage...his remix of St Germain's 'Alabama Blues' (plus all his other tunes and remixes) and tracks like MK's remix of 'Professional Widow' have ties in both genres and just blur whatever minor divide there was between the two anyway

other tracks on the border:

Aftershock 'Slave To The Vibe' (the C&C style club mix)
Secret Life 'Always Be'
Sounds Of Blackness 'The Pressure'
Inner City 'Your Love', 'Pennies From Heaven'
Deep Dish 'Hideaway (Deep Dish mix)'
Hard Drive 'Deep Inside'
Barbara Tucker 'Beautiful People'
Juliet Roberts 'Caught In The Middle'

OK, admittedly I wasn't deep into the stuff at ALL, I had some older friends who basically introduced me to a lot of the stuff.
My favorites were Oblivians and The Mummies. I recently saw that the latter have reunited too, and even re-released an album on CD!

Actually, with The Oblivians, I only REALLY loved "Soul Food", the 10"s were kinda dull, "Popular Favorites" was half'n'half and the album with Mr Quintron was kinda hokey.... But man oh man did Soul Food ever hit the spot!

Or did I misunderstand this thread and talk about something wrong... again? I don't recognize a single band mentioned so far in this thread, unfortunately.

The one I've got is'We Can Make it' on Freetown.I remember hearing another great one of their's once on GirlsFM(that station was excellent)I wish I owned more of this stuff, another one I've got is Ira Levi's 'Do What You Like',excellent synths on that track.I love a lot of the recent US/UK Soulful Garage stuff too-the latest Disco Kandi comp is fab & check out 'Acid Jazz' Long Lost Brother' comp, there's a few brilliant vocal gems on it,I can't recommend it enough.Just got another great comp 'Garage City' on Defected from 2001 with a great selection from Bobby & Steve.

nine years pass...

I've been really into this kind of house for months now but still don't know where to look except from some mixes here and there. So I thought it'd be nice to have a thread to post some nice finds. I'll start:
